The most defensible fuel-only cost for a CNG SUV is calculated from your own refueling records: divide the station price in dollars per gasoline-gallon equivalent (GGE) by the SUV’s observed miles per GGE. If the station price is $2.30/GGE and your SUV averages 22 mi/GGE, the result is $0.1045 per mile, or about 10.5 cents. At 15,000 miles, fuel alone would be approximately $1,568 for that illustrative combination. Replace both figures with your local, time-stamped price and measured efficiency; neither the example efficiency nor the standardized mileage is a guarantee of real-world use.
A complete running-cost calculation must also state what is included. Fuel-only cost excludes maintenance, tires, insurance, registration, taxes, financing, depreciation, purchase or conversion costs, and any private fueling equipment. Add those categories only when you are calculating operating cost or total cost of ownership.

Start with the cost question you actually want to answer
People use running cost to mean three different things. Define the scope before collecting numbers so a CNG SUV and a gasoline SUV are compared on equal terms.
Fuel-only cost
Fuel-only cost answers, “What does energy for each mile cost?” It uses CNG purchased and excludes every non-fuel expense. This is the cleanest measure for a commute, road trip, or price comparison at the pump.

Operating cost
Operating cost adds recurring use expenses such as scheduled maintenance, repairs, tires, and sometimes routine fees. State whether an estimate uses actual invoices, a service schedule, or an allowance. A maintenance allowance is not the same as a bill paid by a particular owner.
Total cost of ownership
Total ownership cost can include fuel, maintenance, tires, insurance, registration and licensing, taxes, financing, depreciation, purchase or conversion cost, and fueling infrastructure. A CNG SUV may require a different acquisition or fueling setup from a gasoline SUV, so omitting those items can change the conclusion. Do not call a fuel-only result a total cost.
Collect several refueling records
A single tank is too sensitive to weather, traffic, idling, fill pressure, and the way a station stops the dispenser. Use a repeatable log covering several consecutive fills.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- At the first fill: record the odometer (or trip-meter reading), date, station, displayed price, and quantity dispensed. Record the quantity in GGE if the dispenser provides it.
- Drive normally: keep notes on city and highway miles, unusually heavy loads, towing, long idling, extreme temperatures, and tire-pressure changes.
- At the next fill: record the new odometer reading and the GGE added. Fill to the same practical stopping point each time when possible.
- Calculate the interval: subtract the previous odometer reading from the current one. Divide those miles by the GGE purchased at the current fill.
- Repeat: collect multiple intervals, then average the results. Keep short trips separate from a longer-running average so a brief abnormal result does not become your claimed normal.
For an interval, use observed mi/GGE = miles driven ÷ GGE purchased. If your odometer was reset, combine the trip-meter reading with the recorded starting mileage and check that the number is plausible before using it.
Put CNG prices and quantities on one GGE basis
EPA uses MPGe for vehicles that do not consume liquid gasoline. MPGe is an energy-equivalent measure: it represents the miles a vehicle can travel using fuel with the same energy content as one gallon of gasoline. Station pricing must be expressed on that same GGE basis before you divide by miles per GGE.
Some dispensers show dollars per GGE; others may show kilograms, therms, or another natural-gas unit. Do not divide a price in dollars per kilogram by mi/GGE. Obtain the station’s stated GGE equivalent or a documented conversion, and record the unit beside every price. If a receipt and dispenser display disagree, retain both records and investigate the station’s billing convention rather than silently choosing one.
Use the price actually available to you, with the date and station recorded. CNG prices and station availability vary by location and time. A fleet, membership, or private station price may not be available to a retail driver, so label the access restriction.

Fuel cost per mile = CNG price ($/GGE) ÷ observed mi/GGE.
For a trip, multiply that result by trip miles. For a yearly estimate, multiply by expected annual miles. Keep at least four decimal places during the calculation and round the displayed answer to cents per mile or the nearest dollar only at the end.
Illustrative calculation
Assume, only for illustration, that a driver observes 22 mi/GGE and pays $2.30/GGE:
- $2.30 ÷ 22 = $0.1045 per mile.
- Rounded for communication, that is about 10.5 cents per mile.
- At 15,000 miles, $0.1045 × 15,000 = $1,567.50, or about $1,568 per year.
The 22 mi/GGE input is not a vehicle rating. Measure your SUV or use a clearly identified model-specific value. The $2.30/GGE and 15,000-mile figures are standardized EPA examples for the 2027 model year, published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2026; they are not a promise of your local price or annual mileage.
Handle city and highway driving separately
If your route mix is known, calculate city and highway fuel independently instead of applying one combined figure to every mile. The annual method is:
Annual fuel cost = (city miles ÷ city mi/GGE + highway miles ÷ highway mi/GGE) × applicable CNG price.
For example, enter your expected annual city miles and highway miles, divide each by its corresponding measured or model-specific efficiency, add the GGE totals, and multiply by the price that applies to each purchase. If city and highway fills occur at different prices, multiply each segment’s GGE by its own price before adding them. This mirrors the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center method of dividing city and highway miles by their respective fuel economies.
Make the real-world measurement defensible
EPA official values come from laboratory tests whose results are combined and weighted to estimate average use. Actual driving can differ. A credible real-world report therefore describes the conditions behind the number.

Report a short-trip result as a short-trip result. A long-run average based on many refuels is more stable, but it still describes that driver’s route, climate, payload, and station conditions rather than every CNG SUV.
Project trip and annual costs without hiding assumptions
Trip estimate
Multiply fuel dollars per mile by planned miles. Add a note if the trip requires a detour to reach a CNG station. The detour adds fuel, time, and mileage that a pump-price-only calculation misses.
Annual estimate
Use expected annual miles, not an automatic national average. EPA’s standardized 15,000-mile assumption is useful for comparing labels, but replace it with your commute, family travel, or fleet schedule for a personal budget. If annual mileage changes, fuel cost changes proportionally only when price and efficiency remain constant.
Sensitivity to price and efficiency
Small changes in either input materially affect the result. The following is an arithmetic sensitivity example, not a test of a particular SUV:
| Price | Observed efficiency | Fuel cost per mile | Fuel cost at 15,000 miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| $2.00/GGE | 18 mi/GGE | 11.1 cents | $1,667 |
| $2.30/GGE | 22 mi/GGE | 10.5 cents | $1,568 |
| $3.00/GGE | 26 mi/GGE | 11.5 cents | $1,731 |
| $3.00/GGE | 18 mi/GGE | 16.7 cents | $2,500 |
Use this kind of range when a station’s price changes frequently or your route varies seasonally. Do not present a single decimal as more precise than the records support.
Compare a CNG SUV with a gasoline SUV fairly
A valid comparison holds the annual mileage, route mix, period, and included cost categories constant. Compare fuel cost per mile first, then expand the calculation.
| Comparison axis | CNG calculation | Gasoline calculation | What must stay consistent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel cost per mile | CNG $/GGE ÷ observed CNG mi/GGE | Gasoline $/gallon ÷ observed gasoline mpg | Same route, dates, and driving conditions where possible |
| Annual fuel | CNG fuel cost per mile × annual miles | Gasoline fuel cost per mile × annual miles | Identical annual mileage |
| Operating cost | Add maintenance, repairs, and tires actually included | Add the same categories | Same accounting period and evidence standard |
| Total ownership | Add insurance, registration, taxes, financing, depreciation, and infrastructure when applicable | Add the corresponding categories | Same ownership period and treatment of upfront costs |
| Access and volatility | Record station locations, hours, payment rules, outages, and price changes | Record equivalent gasoline access and price history | Same geography and observation period |
Do not compare a CNG vehicle’s measured consumption with a gasoline vehicle’s window-sticker value and call the result real-world. Measure both under comparable conditions or identify which figures are laboratory estimates.
Account for station access and infrastructure
A low pump price is not useful if the nearest reliable station is impractical. Map the stations you can legally and reliably use along your normal routes. Record opening hours, payment requirements, public or private access, typical queueing, and outage frequency during the same period as your price log. If a trip requires a detour, include the detour miles and the possibility of arriving with insufficient range.

Private home or fleet fueling equipment belongs in the broader calculation, not in the fuel-only figure. Include purchase, installation, inspection, electricity, maintenance, permits, and financing when those costs are borne by the owner. If you do not have reliable figures, state that infrastructure cost is excluded rather than assuming it is zero.
Use the DOE AFDC calculator as a cross-check
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center Vehicle Cost Calculator allows custom natural-gas fuel economy, fuel prices, annual mileage, and city/highway mix. Enter your measured or model-specific efficiency, local price, actual annual miles, and route split. Treat the result as a transparent scenario, then compare it with your refueling log. A calculator cannot correct an incorrect unit, an inaccessible station, or an efficiency number measured under different conditions.

After calculating fuel, add each recurring category separately so the reader can see what drives the total.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Category | How to calculate it | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | Add scheduled service and an allowance for unscheduled repairs over the chosen period; divide by miles | Invoices, service schedule, or clearly labeled estimate |
| Tires | Total tire purchases, mounting, balancing, and disposal divided by miles during the tire sets’ useful life | Receipts and replacement mileage |
| Insurance | Annual premium divided by annual miles, if expressing insurance as dollars per mile | Policy bills and coverage period |
| Registration and taxes | Annual or periodic charges allocated to the same ownership period | Government invoices and renewal dates |
| Financing | Interest and eligible fees allocated according to the ownership-cost method you choose | Loan schedule |
| Depreciation | Purchase price minus expected sale value, divided by expected ownership miles | Purchase contract and defensible resale estimate |
| Infrastructure | Allocated installation, equipment, energy, and maintenance cost | Quotes, invoices, utility bills, and service records |
Adding these rows produces a broader dollars-per-mile figure: total included costs divided by miles in the same period. Keep one-time purchase costs separate from recurring fuel so readers can see whether the result is driven by the vehicle’s energy use or by ownership economics.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the label value as a promise
Problem: treating an EPA laboratory estimate or MPGe value as guaranteed consumption. Correction: use multiple refuels and disclose the conditions.
Mixing units
Problem: dividing dollars per kilogram or therm by miles per GGE. Correction: convert both price and quantity to GGE, or use a matching efficiency unit throughout.
Using the wrong fill quantity
Problem: dividing interval miles by the previous fill’s quantity, a partial fill, or a receipt from another vehicle. Correction: match each interval’s miles with the GGE added at the end of that interval and flag partial or interrupted fills.

Leaving access costs out of a practical comparison
Problem: reporting pump savings while ignoring a long detour, restricted station, or unreliable opening hours. Correction: record station access and include detour miles, time, or infrastructure in the broader decision.
Comparing unlike ownership totals
Problem: adding depreciation and insurance to one vehicle but not the other. Correction: use identical categories, mileage, ownership period, and accounting treatment.
A reusable worksheet
Copy these fields into a spreadsheet or notebook:
- Date and station
- Odometer at fill
- Miles since previous fill
- GGE dispensed
- Price in dollars per GGE
- City miles and highway miles, if tracked
- Weather, payload, towing, idling, and tire-pressure notes
- Interval mi/GGE
- Interval fuel dollars per mile
- Cumulative miles, cumulative GGE, and cumulative fuel cost
For the cumulative result, divide total miles by total GGE rather than averaging interval efficiencies without weighting. Then divide the current or period-average CNG price by that cumulative mi/GGE. This prevents a short interval from counting as much as a long interval.

A clear result includes the vehicle or test description, measurement dates, number of refuels, total miles, observed mi/GGE, station price and unit, route mix, unusual conditions, and the cost scope. A concise statement might read: “Over six public fills and 1,240 miles from May 1 through June 15, the SUV averaged 21.4 mi/GGE. The recorded station price averaged $2.45/GGE, producing $0.1145 per mile in fuel. Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use the EPA 15,000-mile assumption for my budget?
Use it only to reproduce a standardized label comparison. For a personal budget, replace it with your expected annual miles and identify the year or mileage period.
What if my CNG station does not show GGE?
Do not divide its price by mi/GGE until you obtain a documented conversion to GGE. Record the original unit and conversion basis so the result can be audited.
Why is my measured mi/GGE different from the vehicle label?
Laboratory estimates are weighted test results. Route mix, weather, speed, payload, idling, tire pressure, fill behavior, and station conditions can all change observed consumption.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I compare a CNG SUV and gasoline SUV using only pump prices?
Yes for a narrowly defined fuel-only comparison, provided both prices and efficiencies use compatible units and the same route and mileage. Include maintenance, access, and ownership categories for a broader decision.
