To estimate a commercial vehicle loan, first calculate the EMI from the amount financed, periodic interest rate and number of monthly payments. Then multiply the EMI by the number of payments to find scheduled repayment, subtract the principal to find scheduled interest, and add applicable processing fees, taxes, documentation, valuation, stamp-duty and conditional charges. This produces a planning estimate—not a lender quote—until the lender confirms the rate method, amortization schedule and fee treatment in writing.

The method matters. The reducing-balance formula below applies to a standard equal-payment loan, but some commercial vehicle products use a flat rate. A flat percentage and a reducing-balance percentage cannot be compared directly, even when the headline number is identical.

What commercial vehicle EMI tells you—and what it does not

An equated monthly instalment (EMI) is the scheduled payment for a loan repaid in equal instalments. It normally combines two parts: interest for that month and repayment of principal. At the start of a reducing-balance loan, interest is calculated on a larger outstanding balance, so a greater share of the EMI goes to interest. As the balance falls, the interest portion declines and the principal portion rises.

EMI is only one part of the borrowing decision. It does not automatically include every fee or tax, and a low EMI can simply reflect a longer term. To understand the cost, calculate all of the following separately:

How do I calculate commercial vehicle loan EMI?

Reducing-balance formula

For equal monthly payments on a reducing-balance loan, use:

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1)

Where:

  • P is the principal financed after the down payment, in rupees.
  • r is the monthly interest rate expressed as a decimal.
  • n is the total number of monthly instalments.

For a nominal annual percentage rate, the usual conversion is r = annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100. Confirm the lender’s convention, compounding and payment timing; some agreements may use a different periodic calculation. If the rate is zero, do not use the formula’s division step: EMI is simply P ÷ n.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scheduled repayment and interest

Once EMI is known:

  • Scheduled total repayment = EMI × n
  • Scheduled interest = (EMI × n) − P

This is the same structure described in the Central Board of Secondary Education’s Applied Mathematics material, where the periodic payment is represented by R and total interest by nR − P. It applies to scheduled payments only; fees and taxes must be assessed separately.

Worked reducing-balance example

Assume a vehicle costs ₹15,00,000, you pay ₹3,00,000 upfront, and the financed principal is therefore ₹12,00,000. Assume an illustrative nominal annual rate of 10.50% and a five-year term with 60 monthly instalments. The monthly rate is 10.50 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.00875.

Applying the formula gives an EMI of approximately ₹25,824. Because the figure is rounded, a lender’s final instalment may differ by a few rupees. Scheduled repayment is approximately ₹25,824 × 60 = ₹15,49,440, and scheduled interest is approximately ₹3,49,440. These figures exclude fees, taxes and any insurance or other costs that are not part of the loan principal.

How an amortization table checks the calculation

An amortization table makes every payment auditable. For each month, show opening balance, interest charged, principal repaid and closing balance. Monthly interest is opening balance × monthly rate. Principal repaid is EMI − monthly interest. Closing balance is opening balance − principal repaid.

The first three rows use the rounded EMI of ₹25,824, so a lender using more decimal places will produce slightly different cents or paise and may adjust the final instalment. Union Bank of India’s commercial vehicle calculator displays the same core fields—EMI, total interest, total repayment and the balance components—and asks the user for amount, tenure and interest rate.

Is a flat interest rate the same as a reducing-balance rate?

No. Under a flat method, interest may be calculated on the original principal for the stated duration. Under a reducing-balance method, each period’s interest is calculated on the outstanding principal after prior repayments. The percentages are therefore not interchangeable.

One lender’s commercial vehicle FAQ states: “Interest is charged on a flat rate based on the scheme applicable for the particular product.” That statement is specific to the applicable scheme; it does not establish that every commercial vehicle loan uses a flat method.

Flat-rate illustration

Using the same ₹12,00,000 principal, a five-year term and a hypothetical 10.50% flat annual rate, simple flat interest would be ₹12,00,000 × 10.50% × 5 = ₹6,30,000. Total scheduled repayment would be ₹18,30,000 and the monthly payment would be ₹30,500. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a quote or a claim about a particular lender’s scheme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That flat-rate payment is not directly comparable with the ₹25,824 reducing-balance example. Ask for the lender’s annualized cost or APR-equivalent measure, the calculation method and the complete payment schedule before deciding which offer is cheaper.

How do I calculate total loan cost?

Start with scheduled repayment, then add charges that are not already included in the financed amount or in a disclosed all-in cost measure. A practical equation is:

Total cash cost = down payment + scheduled loan repayments + separately paid fees and taxes + conditional charges actually incurred − refunds or credits.

For the borrowing cost alone, exclude the vehicle’s cash price and focus on the financing outflow:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Total financing cost = scheduled interest + separately paid financing fees and taxes + conditional financing charges.

Do not double-count a fee. If a processing charge is added to the principal, it is already reflected in the repayment schedule; if it is included in an APR or other disclosed total-cost figure, add it only once.

Charges to look for

  • Processing or origination fee.
  • Documentation or agreement fee.
  • Valuation fee, especially for a used commercial vehicle.
  • Stamp duty and state-specific document charges.
  • Applicable goods and services tax or other taxes.
  • Registration or collateral-document handling charges.
  • Cancellation charges if the disbursement is cancelled.
  • Late-payment or cheque/ECS return charges.
  • Part-prepayment and foreclosure charges, including exceptions and minimum lock-in periods.

Published schedules demonstrate why the fee sheet matters. An ICICI Bank commercial vehicle schedule accessed in October 2026 lists a processing fee of up to 2% of the loan amount, plus documentation, valuation, stamp-duty and other charges subject to its terms and exceptions. A HDFC Bank schedule accessed in October 2026 lists processing fees up to 1.50% of the loan amount, valuation, stamp duty and other charges; some listed amounts are exclusive of GST where indicated. These are lender-specific examples, not universal market prices.

Worked total-cost illustration

Suppose the reducing-balance example has a ₹15,49,440 scheduled repayment. Add a hypothetical 2% processing fee on ₹12,00,000 (₹24,000) and 18% GST on that fee (₹4,320), paid separately. The financing outflow would then be ₹15,49,440 + ₹24,000 + ₹4,320 = ₹15,77,760, while the borrower also paid the ₹3,00,000 down payment for the vehicle. If the fee was financed instead, the principal and EMI would change; do not add the same ₹24,000 again as a separate cash payment.

Use a worksheet or spreadsheet to calculate scenarios

A spreadsheet is useful because it keeps assumptions visible and lets you compare terms without relying on a rounded online result. Create these columns or fields:

Field What to enter Why it matters
Vehicle price Agreed on-road or invoice amount, specifying what is included Sets the starting cost
Down payment Cash paid before disbursement Determines principal financed
Amount financed Vehicle price minus down payment, adjusted for financed fees Principal P
Rate and method Annual rate, flat or reducing, fixed or variable Determines the correct calculation
Term Number of monthly instalments Determines n
EMI Formula result or written lender figure Monthly cash commitment
Scheduled repayment EMI × number of payments Total scheduled outflow
Scheduled interest Scheduled repayment − principal Cost before fees
Upfront fees and taxes Each item separately, with GST status Prevents omissions and double-counting
Conditional fees Only charges that could apply to your plan Shows downside risk
Total cash paid Down payment plus all loan outflows Compares the real scenario

In spreadsheet software, the reducing-balance payment function is commonly written as PMT(monthly_rate, number_of_payments, -principal). Enter the annual rate divided by 12 and 100, not the annual percentage itself. For example, use PMT(10.5%/12,60,-1200000) for the illustrative scenario. Check that the function’s sign convention shows EMI as a positive number.

Step-by-step process before accepting an offer

  1. Confirm the vehicle and amount financed. Record the vehicle price, down payment, trade-in credit if any, and every fee being added to the loan. The principal used in your calculation must match the lender’s proposed disbursement amount.
  2. Identify the rate method. Ask whether the quote is flat, reducing balance, daily rest, monthly rest or another method. Ask whether the rate is fixed for the entire term or can change.
  3. Convert the rate correctly. For a conventional nominal annual reducing-balance quote, divide by 12 and by 100. If the agreement specifies another convention, use that convention instead.
  4. Enter the term in months. A 48-month loan has n = 48; a 60-month loan has n = 60. Do not mix years and months in the formula.
  5. Calculate EMI and verify one payment manually. Multiply the opening balance by the monthly rate to obtain first-month interest. Subtract that interest from EMI to obtain first-month principal repayment.
  6. Multiply EMI by the number of payments. This is scheduled repayment, not necessarily the full cash cost.
  7. Subtract principal for scheduled interest. Keep this figure separate from processing fees, taxes and optional products.
  8. Read the fee schedule line by line. Note whether GST is included, whether a charge is financed, and which charges apply only to used vehicles, certain states or particular collateral.
  9. Model early repayment only if relevant. Add the lender’s written part-prepayment or foreclosure charge and any minimum holding period. Do not assume an advertised “no prepayment” statement applies to every borrower or product.
  10. Compare the written offer. Reconcile your EMI, total interest and total repayment with the lender’s amortization schedule. Resolve any difference before signing.

How to compare commercial vehicle loan offers on like terms

Compare offers using the same vehicle price, down payment, financed amount, term, payment timing and fee assumptions. Otherwise, a lower EMI may simply reflect less borrowing or more months to repay.

Comparison point Question to ask Why it changes the decision
Rate method Is the quoted rate flat or reducing balance? The same percentage can produce very different interest totals.
Annualized cost What APR or equivalent annualized cost is disclosed? It can incorporate interest and origination cost more usefully than a headline rate.
EMI and frequency Are payments monthly, fortnightly or otherwise timed? Payment frequency changes cash flow and calculations.
Total scheduled interest How much interest accrues through the full term? Shows the cost before additional fees.
All fees and taxes Which charges are payable separately, financed or GST-exclusive? Prevents an artificially low comparison.
Prepayment terms What are the lock-in, part-prepayment and foreclosure rules? Matters if you expect seasonal cash flow or an early sale.
Offer assumptions Which borrower, vehicle segment, tenure and relationship assumptions apply, and how long is the quote valid? Rates can change after underwriting or expiry.

Use the lender’s written total-cost and payment figures where available. A calculator result is an estimate based on the inputs supplied. Union Bank of India cautions that actual EMI can depend on market trends, Reserve Bank of India guidelines and changing policies.

Rates and fees change: how to use published figures

Published rates are dated context, not a personal approval. ICICI Bank reported a commercial vehicle loan range of 8.35% to 14.00%, with a 10.11% mean, for individual commercial vehicle loan disbursals in the quarter ended June 2026 (Q1 FY 2026–27). The stated range excludes subsidy and government schemes, and the lender says pricing varies with factors including customer relationship, vehicle segment and tenure.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Using the annual percentage as the monthly rate

Entering 10.5 instead of 0.105 ÷ 12 makes the calculation meaningless. Convert the annual percentage to a decimal monthly rate first, unless the agreement specifies another method.

Assuming every loan is reducing balance

The standard EMI formula does not describe every commercial vehicle product. Obtain written confirmation of the method and inspect the amortization schedule.

Comparing EMI without matching the term

A 72-month loan can have a lower EMI than a 48-month loan while producing more total interest. Compare scheduled repayment and total financing cost at the same principal and term before choosing.

Ignoring fees because the EMI looks affordable

Processing, documentation, valuation, stamp duty and GST can materially change the cash required at disbursement. List each charge and mark whether it is upfront, financed or conditional.

Adding a financed fee twice

If a fee increases the principal, its cost is already embedded in the EMI and scheduled repayment. Add it separately only when it is paid outside the loan or when the lender’s all-in figure excludes it.

Relying on a rounded calculator result

Online calculators often round the EMI. Reconcile the rounded result with the lender’s unrounded schedule and expect a small final-instalment adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a published rate as guaranteed

Rates depend on underwriting, borrower profile, vehicle segment, tenure, policy and date. Keep the quote’s validity period and eligibility assumptions with your worksheet.

What to request from the lender

  • A written statement of whether interest is flat or reducing balance and how the periodic rate is derived.
  • The exact amount financed, including any financed fees.
  • EMI, payment dates, number of instalments and the complete amortization schedule.
  • Total scheduled repayment and scheduled interest.
  • APR or equivalent annualized cost, with a definition of what it includes.
  • Every processing, documentation, valuation, stamp-duty and tax charge, including GST treatment.
  • Late-payment, cancellation, part-prepayment and foreclosure rules, including exceptions and lock-ins.
  • The rate, fee schedule and offer validity date applicable to your application.

With those figures, you can reproduce the EMI, audit the interest allocation and calculate the total cash cost without mistaking a headline rate for the price of credit.
