The Mazda RX-7 FD is special because its compact twin-rotor rotary engine, sequential twin turbochargers, front-midship layout, weight-saving measures and four-wheel double-wishbone suspension were developed as one sports-car package. Its low, wide shape gave that engineering a distinctive form. Mazda dates the generation’s introduction to 1991 in its global history, while Mazda UK says it arrived in 1992; production ended in 2002.
What is the RX-7 FD?
The FD is the third generation of Mazda’s RX-7. Mazda’s corporate history describes its development goal as “the best rotary engine pure sports car,” and identifies the car as the Anfini RX-7. Mazda’s global chronology lists its introduction in 1991; Mazda UK’s 2020 retrospective gives 1992 as the final generation’s arrival. Those dates reflect different market or launch contexts, not a single universal retail date.

Mazda says RX-7 production ended in 2002. The FD also won the inaugural Japan New Car of the Year award, according to Mazda’s account. Mazda’s 1990–1999 corporate history and its 2020 UK retrospective provide the respective historical context.
What engine is in the FD RX-7?
The FD uses Mazda’s 13B-REW, a two-rotor rotary engine paired with sequential twin turbochargers. Mazda’s history lists 255 PS for the described 13B, but that figure should not be treated as the output of every FD: specifications varied by market and model year.

In a sequential arrangement, the turbos are brought into operation in sequence rather than simply working as an identical pair across the entire rev range. Mazda USA says the system was intended to combine low-end torque with top-end thrust. The manufacturer’s published material cited here does not establish a universal changeover rpm or a year-by-year calibration breakdown. See Mazda USA’s RX-7 history and Mazda’s corporate history.
Why was the FD designed around a compact engine?
The rotary’s compact packaging helped Mazda place it in a front-midship layout: the engine sits behind the front axle rather than being positioned wholly ahead of it. Mazda connects this arrangement with a low center of gravity and reports a 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution for the FD. That balance was part of the design rationale, not proof by itself that a car will handle well; suspension, tires, structure and setup matter too.

Mazda also emphasizes extensive weight reduction. Its heritage account says the development team removed more than 100 kilograms through an effort called “Plan Zero.” Less mass can support agility and responsiveness, but Mazda’s figure is a manufacturer history claim, not an independent test result. The company’s account of the second- and third-generation Savanna RX-7 explains the project and layout.

Mazda fitted aluminum double-wishbone suspension at all four wheels and describes the FD’s dynamic performance as the combined result of its powertrain and weight-saving work. The compact engine, front-midship packaging, near-even weight distribution and reduced mass were intended to help the car respond accurately and remain stable. No independent handling test is established by the cited Mazda histories, so these points explain the engineering intent rather than claim a measured advantage over another car.

A 50:50 static weight split is only one part of the picture. It does not, on its own, describe how weight moves under braking or cornering, nor does it account for tires, alignment, suspension tuning or road conditions. Mazda’s own emphasis is on the integrated chassis and powertrain, not a single balance figure.

Mazda’s design theme for the generation was “Beauty in the Beast.” The company describes a body that became shorter and lower, with a wider stance than its predecessor; the wheelbase was also reduced. Mazda linked those proportions to stability and a pure sports-car character. The result is a shape that looks low and broad without separating the car’s visual identity from its packaging and chassis goals.

FD RX-7s were sold in multiple market and model-year variants. The sources cited here establish the generation’s signature engineering, but they do not support a reliable year-by-year comparison of trims, output, emissions equipment or regional availability. A specific horsepower figure should therefore be tied to the market and model year it describes, rather than presented as universal.
These historical sources also do not establish rotary maintenance requirements, fuel economy, reliability or ownership cost. Those are separate ownership questions and need specialist or owner documentation rather than inference from Mazda’s design history.
