You can buy a European car for use in Canada only if the exact vehicle has a credible route to lawful import and provincial registration. Most vehicles built and certified for markets outside the United States and Mexico cannot be permanently imported under Canada’s general rules. Verify the vehicle’s VIN, certification market and manufacture date with Transport Canada before signing a binding purchase agreement or arranging shipment; then confirm provincial registration, warranty coverage, parts access and service capability.
Can I import a European car to Canada?
Sometimes, but do not assume that a car sold in Europe is eligible. Transport Canada says most vehicles sold outside the United States and Mexico cannot be imported. Its guidance explains that a vehicle built and certified to meet another country’s vehicle standards generally cannot be modified after the fact to meet Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. European approval, a similar Canadian-market model or a seller’s assurance that a car is “easy to federalize” is not proof that the specific vehicle qualifies.

The first decision is therefore not whether the price is attractive or a Canadian shop can maintain the car. It is whether the vehicle, identified by its full VIN and supporting documents, has an import route that applies to its exact facts. Transport Canada’s pages for vehicles from countries other than the United States and Mexico and its FAQ describe narrow exceptions, but eligibility is vehicle-specific. Ask Transport Canada to assess the exact vehicle before you commit to shipping.
Import routes and what they mean
| Possible route | What the official guidance establishes | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle at least 15 years old | A regulated-class vehicle generally must be at least 15 years old, calculated from its month and year of manufacture, and must not be a bus. Transport Canada identifies the compliance label as the primary evidence of age. | Confirm the manufacture month and year from the label and supporting records, and check the intended province’s registration requirements separately. |
| New vehicle bought directly from a foreign manufacturer | Transport Canada identifies a narrow exception for a new vehicle purchased directly from a foreign manufacturer that meets all Canadian standards and is pre-authorized. | Obtain confirmation of Canadian-standard compliance and pre-authorization for the exact vehicle before buying or arranging transport. Do not treat a dealer’s general statement as approval. |
| Returning Canadian-specification vehicle | Certain returning vehicles originally built to Canadian specifications and retaining their original certification may qualify under a limited route. | Establish that this specific vehicle retains the relevant original certification and have Transport Canada confirm that the route applies. |
| Other case-specific authorization | Transport Canada lists limited exceptions; the available facts do not establish a general exception for ordinary European-market cars. | Ask Transport Canada what documents and advance authorization the specific case requires. CBSA’s September 2, 2026 Memorandum D19-12-1 says certain case-by-case importers must apply four to six weeks in advance for an authorization number; that lead time is conditional, not universal. |
These routes are not interchangeable. In particular, an older vehicle may be outside the regulated-class import restriction yet still face customs checks and provincial registration barriers. An import that is accepted at the border is not automatically road-legal in the province where you intend to use it.

Can I bring my car with me when I move to Canada?
Moving to Canada, returning after living abroad or having owned the vehicle for years does not by itself establish an exemption. Transport Canada’s FAQ says a vehicle purchased under normal conditions while its owner was residing abroad is generally not importable if it was not manufactured to meet Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The FAQ also describes the 15-year non-regulated route and other limited exceptions.
Before treating a move as relevant to eligibility, gather the vehicle’s certification evidence and ownership history, then ask Transport Canada which rule applies. Do not ship first on the assumption that personal effects, permanent-resident status or prior ownership will override the vehicle’s certification. The financial risk is practical: if the car is not admissible, you may become responsible for storage, export or disposal costs.
Checklist: identify the exact car before buying
Ask the seller for documents and photographs before paying a non-refundable deposit. Record the facts below in one file so Transport Canada, CBSA, the provincial licensing authority, the manufacturer and repair shops can assess the same vehicle rather than a similar model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Full VIN: Copy every character from the vehicle and ownership documents. Use the same VIN when asking about eligibility, warranty, parts and service.
- Make, model, trim and model year: Record the precise version, but do not use model year as a substitute for manufacture date when checking the age threshold.
- Manufacture month and year: Request a clear photograph of the manufacturer’s compliance label. Transport Canada identifies that label as the primary evidence of age for the older-vehicle route.
- Original certification market: Determine whether the vehicle was built and certified for the European market, for Canada, or for another market. Do not infer certification from where the car is currently registered or where it was assembled.
- Current registration country and title documents: Obtain the registration record, ownership documents and sales paperwork. Keep copies that show the identity of the vehicle and the chain of ownership.
- Title or damage history: Ask for any salvage, rebuilt or comparable branding history and include it in checks with the destination province.
- Seller’s written claims: Preserve claims about eligibility, warranty, prior Canadian registration or compliance. Treat them as information to verify, not as official authorization.
If the label is missing, unreadable or inconsistent with the paperwork, pause. The manufacture date is material to the 15-year test, and a seller’s estimate or a model-year listing is not a substitute for reliable evidence. Do not arrange transport while a necessary eligibility fact remains unresolved.
Confirm admissibility before signing or shipping
- Start with Transport Canada’s foreign-market import guidance. Review the page for vehicles from countries other than the United States and Mexico and the applicable FAQ. The general rule makes foreign-market certification a central issue; do not start from the assumption that post-arrival modifications can cure it.
- Send the exact vehicle information for confirmation. Provide the full VIN, clear compliance-label photograph, make and model, manufacture month and year, certification-market evidence, ownership documents and the exception you believe may apply. Ask what additional records or authorization are required in your case.
- Wait for a vehicle-specific answer. A similar model, a prior import of a different vehicle or a seller’s experience does not establish that this VIN is eligible. If the case depends on an exception, get confirmation before making a binding commitment.
- Check the province or territory where you will register it. Ask the relevant licensing authority about the vehicle’s age, steering configuration, title brand and required inspections. Transport Canada expressly warns that successful import of an older vehicle does not guarantee that it can be registered or licensed.
- Proceed only when the route and destination are both credible. Keep written responses, the label photo and all supporting records with your purchase file. If eligibility is denied or remains unclear, do not ship the car on the strength of an informal assurance.
Do not assume that a European-market car is admissible because a Canadian manufacturer sells a similar model. The applicable question is whether this vehicle was manufactured and certified in a way that meets an authorized import route—not whether its nameplate, body or engine resembles a Canadian-market version.

Understand the border process and inspection condition
For vehicles subject to the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) program, border entry involves a declaration and supporting documents, followed by the required authorized RIV inspection in Canada. CBSA Memorandum D19-12-1 describes admission as conditional on passing that inspection. If the vehicle fails, export may be required. A border release, an entry document or possession of the car after arrival should not be treated as a final confirmation that it meets the applicable requirements.
Not every vehicle follows the same path, so confirm whether the RIV process applies to your specific import. Ask CBSA what declaration, ownership and other records are required, and check current official guidance for duties and taxes in your circumstances. For a vehicle relying on a case-by-case authorization, allow for the conditional four-to-six-week advance application period stated in the September 2, 2026 memorandum; do not apply that figure to every import.
For vehicles claimed to be at least 15 years old, Transport Canada says CBSA checks the non-regulated age status and ownership documents and may consider soil contamination, applicable duties and taxes, and other customs admissibility requirements. Age-based eligibility is not permission to bypass customs declarations or other border conditions.
Check provincial registration before the car leaves Europe
Import eligibility and permission to register and license a vehicle are separate questions. Transport Canada warns that successful import of an older vehicle does not guarantee provincial or territorial registration. Contact the authority in the place where the car will be registered, rather than relying on a general statement about Canada.
Ask what rules apply to the vehicle’s specific characteristics, including right-hand-drive configuration and any salvage or rebuilt brand. Confirm required provincial inspections, documents and insurance conditions before shipment. The available official guidance does not establish one nationwide rule for these matters; they depend on the destination and vehicle. If the province will not register the car, a successful border crossing does not solve the problem.

Will the warranty transfer to Canada?
There is no supported blanket answer for all European cars. Warranty transferability and geographic coverage depend on the manufacturer, vehicle, warranty terms and remaining coverage. The RIV FAQ guidance recommends contacting the manufacturer for written warranty-transfer details; it does not establish that any particular warranty transfers to a Canadian owner or can be used at a Canadian repair facility.

- the warranty start date and the date or conditions that determine when coverage ends;
- the remaining duration and any mileage or use limits stated in the applicable warranty;
- whether coverage applies to a Canadian owner and repairs performed in Canada;
- which Canadian repair locations, if any, can perform covered work;
- whether the warranty transfers to you and what paperwork or ownership steps are required; and
- exclusions or differences that apply to a vehicle originally sold for the European market.
Ask the manufacturer to identify the written warranty terms that support its answer. If the response is vague, limited to the original sales country or does not name the VIN, do not include the warranty as a dependable part of the car’s value. Budget on the basis of the coverage you can document, not the seller’s description.
Can a Canadian dealer service a European-spec car?
A Canadian dealership may be familiar with the brand without having the tools, technical information, software access or authorization needed for every European-market specification. The available official guidance does not establish service coverage for a particular make or VIN. Verify capability directly before purchase, and ask an independent specialist as well so you have a second practical option.
Give each shop the VIN and ask specific questions rather than asking only whether it “works on the brand.” Confirm whether it can access technical service information for this market specification, diagnose the car’s software and emissions configuration, obtain relevant part numbers, perform routine maintenance and handle warranty repairs if the manufacturer confirms coverage. Ask whether the shop has worked on the same generation and market version, and request realistic lead-time expectations for diagnostic appointments or parts-dependent repairs.

Separate three kinds of support in your notes: work the shop will undertake, work it can diagnose but not complete, and work it will refer elsewhere. If a repair depends on manufacturer authorization or a software procedure, ask who can perform that step in Canada. A positive answer about routine servicing is not proof that a shop can resolve every electronic, emissions or warranty issue.
Can I get parts for it in Canada?
Parts availability is also VIN- and specification-dependent. A shared model name or a visually similar Canadian-market version does not prove that the relevant component has the same part number. Ask both an authorized Canadian dealer and an independent specialist to check the exact VIN and, where possible, the part numbers for maintenance items and likely repair components.
For each shop, ask whether it can identify and order the correct part, where it would source it, and what lead time it can currently estimate. Confirm whether any market-specific part requires sourcing from Europe and whether the shop will install customer-supplied parts. These are questions to resolve before committing, not assumptions that parts will be unavailable or readily stocked.
For a car that depends on a small number of specialist components, ask what happens if the part is back-ordered or superseded. Do not treat a web listing for a similar model as confirmation of fitment. Have the shop verify the part against the VIN or exact part number and explain any uncertainty before you calculate maintenance costs.

Build a landed-cost estimate with a separate line for each of these items:
- purchase price and any costs to obtain the vehicle’s documents;
- shipping and transit insurance;
- applicable customs duties and taxes, confirmed for the vehicle’s origin, value and circumstances;
- port, handling and storage charges, including the cost of delay;
- inspection and import-administration costs that apply to the route;
- any modification that an official import process actually permits—do not budget on the assumption that modifications can make an otherwise inadmissible foreign-certified car compliant;
- provincial inspection, registration and insurance costs; and
- a repair contingency reflecting the warranty and parts support you have been able to verify.
Use written estimates where possible and record what each estimate excludes. Do not substitute an online duty estimate or a seller’s shipping quote for a full landed-cost calculation. If eligibility is uncertain, the possible costs of storage, export or disposal make shipping before confirmation a particularly poor way to test the rules.
Compare the European car with a Canadian-market alternative
Compare total ownership risk, not just the advertised price. A lower purchase price can be outweighed by an uncertain import route, provincial registration difficulty, no confirmed Canadian warranty or repair delays. Put the same VIN-specific evidence and destination assumptions beside each candidate.
| Decision area | Questions to compare | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Admissibility | Which certification market applies? What is the manufacture month and year? What specific route permits this car? | VIN, compliance-label image, certification documents and Transport Canada’s vehicle-specific response. |
| Registration risk | Will the intended province accept the steering configuration and title history? What inspections or other steps are required? | Written or documented guidance from the destination authority and the vehicle’s title records. |
| Warranty | What coverage remains, where is it valid, can it transfer, and which Canadian facilities can perform covered work? | Manufacturer’s written VIN-specific warranty response and applicable terms. |
| Parts and service | Can a local dealer and an independent specialist diagnose this version, identify correct parts and estimate realistic lead times? | Shop responses tied to the VIN and part-number checks for relevant components. |
| Total cost | What is the landed cost plus registration and realistic maintenance or repair exposure compared with a Canadian-market option? | Itemized shipping, customs, inspection and provincial estimates, plus the verified support and warranty details. |
If a candidate cannot clear the admissibility row, do not let a strong score on price, equipment or serviceability make it seem viable. The other comparisons matter only after there is a credible path to lawful import and registration.
A practical go/no-go checklist
- Go to the next check: You have the VIN, readable compliance label, manufacture date, certification-market information, ownership records and known title history.
- Do not commit yet: A critical fact is missing, an exception is assumed rather than confirmed, or the seller is urging you to ship before Transport Canada responds.
- Go to provincial due diligence: Transport Canada has confirmed a plausible import route for this specific vehicle.
- Do not ship yet: The intended province has not confirmed a registration path, especially where right-hand-drive configuration or a salvage brand may matter.
- Go to ownership-cost planning: The manufacturer has answered the warranty question in writing, and local shops have checked service and parts capability against the VIN.
- Make the purchase decision: Your landed-cost estimate includes applicable customs charges, transport, inspection, provincial steps and a repair contingency, with uncertainty clearly marked.
Keep the confirmation records with the vehicle documents. If the VIN, ownership history, title status or intended province changes, reassess the relevant checks rather than assuming the earlier answer still applies.
