How GPS Location Sharing Works When You Lose Cell Service

Your phone can still calculate its position without cell service, but a fresh location update needs a way to reach someone else. Here are the options and their limits.

GPS can still calculate your phone’s position when cell service disappears, but that does not automatically let anyone else see it. GPS satellites broadcast signals that a receiver uses to work out its location; they do not receive your phone’s position. To share a fresh location with family or another contact, your device needs a way to send the coordinates—usually cellular or Wi-Fi internet, a supported phone’s satellite feature, or a separate satellite communicator.

That distinction matters on a road trip through a coverage gap: your phone may still show you on a downloaded map while your ordinary location-sharing app cannot upload a new position. A recipient may see the last location sent before the signal dropped, but that is not proof of where you are now.

GPS positioning and location sharing are two different jobs

“GPS” is often used to mean both finding a position and sharing it. In practice, those are separate steps. First, a receiver calculates its own position from navigation-satellite signals. Then the phone or communicator must transmit those coordinates to an app, service, or person. A device can complete the first step and fail at the second.

How the phone determines where it is

GPS satellites continuously broadcast reference signals. Your phone’s receiver listens to signals from multiple satellites and uses their timing to calculate its position and time. The communication is one-way: satellites do not track the phone or receive a location report from it. GPS.gov describes them as “simply beacons, like lighthouses, broadcasting one-way reference signals.” The GPS user segment calculates a user’s three-dimensional position and time from the signals it receives. GPS.gov’s GPS FAQ and GPS overview explain the system.

The GPS system is described as having a nominal constellation of 24 operating satellites. That is a description of GPS, not a count of every navigation satellite a modern phone might use: some devices can work with additional satellite systems too.

How a location gets to another person

Once a phone has coordinates, an app still needs an outbound connection to send them. With cell service, location sharing can generally upload updates through mobile data. Wi-Fi internet can also carry an update if it is available. When both are absent, ordinary app-based sharing generally cannot deliver a new location. The app might continue to display a previously received point, but the point can become stale while the phone is offline.

A different communication path can change that outcome. A supported iPhone can send a manual Find My location update via satellite under Apple’s stated conditions. A dedicated satellite communicator can send location data through a satellite service. These are distinct from GPS: GPS helps calculate a position; the satellite feature or communicator provides a way to transmit it.

What no cell service means in practice

“No service” does not necessarily mean that the phone has stopped finding its own position. It usually means the phone cannot use the mobile network to send or receive ordinary data. In a vehicle, you might still see your marker move on a map saved to the phone, even as a contact’s shared map stops receiving fresh updates.

Last known location is not live tracking

If a location-sharing app shows a point from before you lost coverage, treat it as the last location successfully delivered—not a live position. The map may make the point look current even when the phone has not sent another update. Look for the app’s update time or status, and contact the person by another available method if the distinction matters.

GPS reception and message delivery can fail independently. A phone may calculate a position but be unable to upload it; conversely, a data connection alone does not guarantee a precise position if the receiver has poor satellite reception. Satellite messages also need a usable path to the sky, so a position fix does not prove that a satellite transmission will go through.

Position accuracy has limits

GPS.gov gives a general estimate that GPS-enabled smartphones are typically accurate within a 4.9 m (16 ft.) radius under open-sky conditions. This is not a guarantee for every phone, location, or shared-location service. GPS.gov says accuracy depends on satellite geometry, signal blockage, atmospheric conditions, and receiver design; it can worsen near buildings, bridges, and trees. A car cabin, steep-sided valley, dense foliage, or nearby structures may affect reception or a satellite transmission. GPS.gov’s accuracy guidance describes the estimate and its qualifications.

Ways to stay visible or navigate off-grid

Option What it can do away from cellular coverage What you need beforehand Important limitation
Phone GPS with downloaded maps Show your position locally and support offline navigation. Download maps and route information while you have internet access. Does not, by itself, send your location to a contact.
Find My location via satellite on a supported iPhone Send a location update to an existing Find My contact. Eligible iPhone, active SIM, regional availability, and sharing set up before leaving coverage. Manual updates are limited to one every 15 minutes; it is not continuous background tracking.
Dedicated satellite communicator Send location data and, depending on the service and device, messages and SOS. Compatible device, active satellite subscription, satellite visibility, and service coverage. Terrain or obstructions can disrupt transmission; service terms depend on device, plan, region, and date.

Choose based on what you need. Offline navigation answers “Where am I, and how do I follow my route?” Remote sharing answers “How can someone else receive my position?” If you need messages or an SOS option as well, check that the specific satellite service and device support those functions. These options are not interchangeable.

Send a Find My location via satellite on a supported iPhone

Apple documents satellite location sharing in Find My for supported iPhones outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Apple’s general satellite support page identifies iPhone 14 or later, but feature availability depends on country or region and service. Check Apple’s current eligibility information for your location and phone before relying on it. Apple identifies Globalstar and its affiliates or third-party providers for the satellite network. Apple’s satellite connection guidance covers availability and practical conditions.

Set up before you leave coverage

  1. Enable location sharing while connected. In Find My, share your location with the person who should receive it. Apple says sharing with that person must already be enabled before you leave coverage; an off-grid satellite update is not a substitute for setting up the relationship later.
  2. Confirm the phone and account meet the requirements. The feature requires a supported iPhone, an active SIM, and availability in the country or region where you plan to use it. Requirements can vary, so check Apple’s current support information rather than assuming the feature works everywhere.
  3. Plan for an open sky view. The phone needs an unobstructed view toward the sky and horizon. A vehicle roof, surrounding terrain, trees, or nearby structures can obstruct the connection. If you cannot establish a connection, moving to a clearer, safer open area may help; never compromise road safety to use the phone.

Send the update when you are off-grid

  1. Open Find My and choose Send My Location.
  2. Follow the on-screen guidance to connect and send the update via satellite. Apple says sending may take a few minutes, so do not assume the recipient has received it as soon as you begin.
  3. Allow for the update limit: Apple says you can send a location once every 15 minutes. This is a manual, periodic update—not continuous background tracking.
  4. Remember that the satellite interaction sends your location to the contact; the sender cannot use that interaction to see the friend’s location in Find My. Recipients can view the latest satellite-sent location for up to seven days, according to Apple’s guide.

Apple describes satellite as a low-bandwidth connection. In ideal clear conditions, a message might take 30 seconds or more; heavy foliage, terrain, or structures can block a connection. Conditions and features differ by country and service. A failed or delayed transmission does not necessarily mean the phone could not calculate its own GPS position. See Apple’s Find My satellite instructions for the current steps and requirements.

Use a dedicated satellite communicator for an off-grid link

A satellite communicator is a separate device and service designed to provide communication beyond ordinary cellular coverage. Garmin describes inReach devices as using the Iridium satellite network to send and receive messages, share basic GPS location data, and initiate interactive SOS. Its LiveTrack description lets followers view progress and request a location ping. Functions depend on the device and service; consult the relevant product and plan details. Garmin’s inReach technology overview and its two-way messaging information describe these capabilities.

Subscription and satellite visibility are essential

Buying the hardware alone does not enable inReach messaging, location sharing, or SOS. Garmin says those services require an active satellite subscription. Some other device functions may remain available without one, but they are not a substitute for the subscription-dependent satellite connection. Terms and capabilities can depend on the device, plan, region, and date; see Garmin’s subscription FAQ.

  • ADVANCED APP INTEGRATION AND LOCATION SHARING: Pair with the Garmin Messenger and Garmin Explore apps for optimized messaging, trip planning, weather forecasts, and LiveTrack location sharing that displays distance, time, and elevation. Voice commands support hands-free check-ins and tracking, and preset messages allow quick updates without using your monthly text allotment, keeping communication efficient and reliable.

The communicator must also be able to reach satellites. Garmin says a clear view of the sky is needed, and its coverage guidance addresses satellite visibility. Terrain and obstructions can interrupt communication, so do not interpret a missing update as proof that the device has stopped calculating a position. A satellite communicator is most useful when you have checked the active service, understand how the device sends an update or message, and can use it where it has a clear view.

Use downloaded maps for navigation, not remote tracking

Offline maps solve a different problem from location sharing. Download map tiles, route information, or other navigation data before a trip while internet access is available. Once offline, the phone can use its location receiver to show your position against the map data stored on the device. If you are driving, set up routes before departure and avoid handling the phone while the vehicle is moving.

Neither a downloaded map nor a locally calculated GPS fix sends your position to someone else. Garmin’s device materials distinguish downloadable offline maps and navigation from satellite communication, which depends on a subscription. Its inReach Mini 2 owner’s manual and subscription FAQ describe those separate functions.

Prepare before a trip through a coverage gap

  • Decide what the other person needs. If they only need to know your route locally, offline maps may be enough. If someone must receive a fresh position while you are offline, arrange a supported satellite path.
  • Set up sharing in advance. Add the intended Find My contact while connected if you plan to use Apple’s satellite location feature.
  • Check service eligibility. Confirm the phone model, active SIM, regional availability, or communicator subscription applicable to your plan.
  • Prepare the route. Download maps and route information, and tell your contact what to expect from update timing. A manual update every 15 minutes on Apple’s feature is not the same as uninterrupted tracking.
  • Understand the sky-view requirement. Identify whether your planned stops offer a clear view toward the sky and horizon. Satellite paths can be blocked by terrain, foliage, buildings, or a vehicle.
  • Agree on a fallback. Make sure the recipient understands that a last known point can become stale and that a transmission may be delayed or blocked. Do not treat any phone or communicator as a guarantee of rescue or uninterrupted contact.

If a contact cannot see your new location

Start by separating a positioning problem from a delivery problem. If your map shows your marker moving, the phone may be calculating its position locally while failing to send it. If the marker is missing or inaccurate too, reception or device conditions may be affecting the position fix.

  • Check the timestamp. Determine whether the contact sees a fresh update or the last location delivered before you lost coverage.
  • Check the connection route. Ordinary app sharing needs an internet connection. If cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable, verify that you are using an eligible satellite feature or communicator rather than expecting a normal app update to go through.
  • Check setup and eligibility. For Find My via satellite, confirm sharing was enabled with that person beforehand, the phone is eligible, the SIM is active, and the feature is available in the region. For a communicator, confirm its satellite service is active.
  • Improve the satellite view if it is safe. Move away from obstructions and toward a clear sky view. Transmission can take time; Apple says its satellite messages may take a few minutes to send.
  • Use the appropriate fallback. If remote sharing is not available, rely on a previously agreed check-in plan or other communication method rather than treating the last displayed coordinate as current.
