You can turn a Mazda Miata into a capable recreational dirt-and-gravel car, but the correct build depends first on the chassis generation, terrain speed, road-registration needs, passenger load, and whether you mean a Baja-inspired trail car or an inspected competition vehicle. A lift alone does not create long-travel suspension or a race-ready Miata. Identify those decisions before buying parts, then build in stages: inspect the donor, select generation-matched suspension, verify tire clearance at full steering and compression, protect the underside, and finish with testing and safety equipment.
Define what “Baja-style” means for your Miata
Baja-style can describe anything from a low-speed dirt-road roadster to a purpose-built desert racer. Those uses impose very different loads. A car that is enjoyable on maintained gravel may be unsafe or unreliable when driven quickly through whoops, deep sand, rocks, or jumps.

Identify the Miata generation before buying anything
Fitment is the first hard boundary. A part documented for one generation should not be assumed to fit another.

The Paco Motorsports three-inch lift listing describes a 1990–2005 application, covering NA and NB cars. That documentation does not authorize installing the kit on an NC or ND. Record the model year, body style, transmission, differential, brakes and existing modifications, then match each proposed component to that exact configuration.
For perspective, Mazda’s 2026 United States specifications list 5.55 inches of laden ground clearance on some soft-top trims and 5.87 inches on RF trims. Those are current-model, trim-specific figures, not a universal measurement for every Miata and not a specification for older cars.
Inspect the donor before changing ride height
Off-road loads magnify weaknesses that may be tolerable on pavement. Put the car on a lift or stands and establish a baseline before ordering suspension parts.

- Structure: Check front and rear subframes, suspension mounting points, rocker areas and floor sections for corrosion, cracks, previous impact damage or distorted bolt holes.
- Joints and bearings: Inspect ball joints, tie-rod ends, wheel bearings and every control-arm bushing for play, torn boots or seized adjusters.
- Brakes: Measure pad and rotor condition, inspect flexible hoses and verify that calipers release cleanly. A raised car still needs dependable braking on loose surfaces.
- Driveline: Look for leaking differential, transmission and axle seals; check propeller-shaft joints and mounts; confirm that the differential mount is sound.
- Cooling: Clean the radiator and condenser, inspect hoses and fans, and repair any temperature or coolant issues before adding heat from slow sand work.
- Engine and electrical systems: Resolve oil leaks, misfires, charging faults and poor grounds. Dust and vibration turn marginal wiring and connectors into intermittent failures.
- Existing geometry: Measure ride height and note current alignment, wheel offset, tire size and available bump-stop travel. These measurements let you identify changes caused by the build.
Plan suspension around usable travel, not just height
Static ground clearance is the distance under a parked vehicle. Wheel travel is how far the wheel can move through compression and droop while maintaining control and avoiding contact. Increasing one does not automatically increase the other.
NA/NB three-inch lift
The documented Paco kit places brackets between the lower control arms and the existing shock assemblies. Paco states that the installation changes alignment, particularly camber, and does not add wheel travel; the original shocks and springs remain the limiting components. The product page says tires up to 25 inches can be installed without fender modification in that application, while larger examples may require fender massaging. Treat those as manufacturer guidance, not an independent guarantee. Have a qualified shop check alignment and clearance through full bump, full droop and steering lock after installation.

Rallycross coilover package
Paco describes its rallycross coilover package as an intermediate option for older Miatas. A coilover conversion can provide more control over spring and damper selection than a simple bracket lift, but its suitability depends on actual travel, spring rates, bump stops, top mounts and the condition of the mounting structure. Ask for the usable compression and droop range, service intervals and replacement-part availability before committing.
Offroadster long-travel system
Paco presents its Offroadster system as the extreme long-travel path for older Miatas. Long travel changes more than ride height: control-arm geometry, axle and joint angles, steering behavior, brake-hose routing and body clearance all need to be engineered together. Verify how the system manages these limits and what reinforcement or fabrication it requires. Vendor descriptions should not be read as a promise of a particular speed, jump capability or race result.

Select wheels and tires after suspension measurements
Do not choose a tire from a photograph or from its advertised diameter alone. Diameter, section width, wheel offset, steering lock, brake clearance, fender shape, suspension travel and loaded bump travel interact. Check the tire at straight-ahead and full-lock positions, with the suspension compressed on both sides, before road use.
Mazda’s owner manual warns: “Using any other tire size than what is specified for the vehicle is dangerous.” It explains that an incorrect size can alter ride, handling, ground and tire clearance, and speedometer calibration, and it instructs owners to respect the specified pressure and load limits. Use the manual for the exact model year and have the modified car measured rather than assuming a size is safe because it fits a different Miata.
Diameter and fender clearance
The 25-inch figure associated with the NA/NB lift kit is a kit-specific manufacturer statement. Larger tires may need fender work, and even a nominally acceptable diameter can rub when the wheel is turned and the suspension is compressed. Record the closest contact point, not merely whether the tire clears while the car is parked.

Width, offset and load
A wider tire can contact the inner suspension, outer fender or both depending on offset. Wheel load rating must cover the actual axle load, passengers, fuel and cargo. Confirm brake-caliper clearance with the wheel manufacturer’s template or a measured trial fit, and recheck torque after the first drives.

A larger rolling circumference changes effective gearing and can make acceleration, clutch work and engine braking feel different. Exomotive documents off-road Exocet configurations using large tires and altered gearing. Those are developed, Miata-derived Exocet platforms, not a bolt-on specification for a stock-bodied Miata. Use their examples as evidence that gearing deserves attention, not as a direct parts recipe.
Add underbody protection without creating new problems
Rocks and ruts can damage an oil pan, transmission case, differential or vulnerable lines. Paco’s catalog lists a skid plate specifically for NA/NB Miatas. Confirm the exact generation, mounting points and coverage before ordering; there is no basis for assuming that a plate listed for NA/NB fits NC or ND cars.
Inspect whether the plate transfers impact into a strong structural area, leaves drain plugs and service points accessible, and maintains clearance around exhaust heat, steering components and suspension movement. A plate protects only the components it covers. It does not make a subframe, differential mount or fuel system invulnerable.
Recovery and route equipment
- Carry a spare tire or a repair system sized for the chosen wheels, plus a jack and wheel tools that reach the raised vehicle.
- Bring a torque wrench or calibrated method for checking wheel fasteners, along with inflation equipment and a pressure gauge.
- Use communications appropriate to the route, adequate water, lighting and a way to secure tools and cargo so they cannot become projectiles.
- Confirm recovery points with the vehicle manufacturer or a qualified fabricator. Do not pull from suspension arms, thin sheet metal or an unverified tow eye.
Keep steering, brakes, cooling and driveline systems in the build
Suspension changes alter the loads seen by every connected system. After setting ride height, inspect steering rack mounts, tie-rod angles, brake-hose slack, ABS wiring, driveshaft clearance and differential mounts through the entire suspension range. Make sure brake hoses do not stretch at full droop and that no wiring can contact a tire.

Loose surfaces reward predictable pedal response rather than simply larger brakes. Renew contaminated fluid, repair seized calipers and verify the parking brake before driving on grades. If a tire change alters the effective gearing, confirm that the clutch, cooling system and differential temperature remain manageable during slow, high-load work.
Dust and heat deserve a maintenance plan. Keep the radiator and air intake free of debris, seal or protect vulnerable electrical connectors, and inspect filters more frequently than you would for pavement-only driving. These are reliability practices, not substitutes for a correctly engineered suspension.

A convertible’s factory rollover protection, seats and belts may be adequate for ordinary road use yet unsuitable for a particular competition class. A lift, larger tire or trail drive does not make a factory Miata race-ready.
For a sanctioned event, obtain the current rulebook for the exact organizer and class before fabricating a cage or buying restraints. Requirements can cover cage tube dimensions and attachment, seat and harness approval, window nets, fire extinguishers or suppression, fuel-system protection, electrical isolation, tow points, helmet standards and inspection paperwork. The exact competition requirements cannot be stated here because no event or class was specified. Have a qualified builder and inspector review the finished car.

A staged build sequence that limits surprises
- Write the use case: State the generation, model year, terrain, expected speed, passenger and cargo load, road-registration requirement and whether competition is intended.
- Baseline the donor: Record ride height, alignment, tire and wheel dimensions, fluid condition, temperatures and any structural or mechanical defects.
- Repair before modifying: Replace worn joints, bushings, bearings, brakes, hoses and damaged mounts. A lift should never be used to hide a failing component.
- Choose the suspension path: Select a generation-documented bracket lift, rallycross coilover package or long-travel conversion according to terrain and speed. Confirm travel and geometry data with the manufacturer or builder.
- Install with measured settings: Torque fasteners to the applicable service specifications, set ride height, and obtain a four-wheel alignment. Record camber, caster and toe before and after adjustment.
- Mock up the wheel and tire: Check brake clearance, steering lock, inner and outer fender clearance, bump-stop contact and loaded clearance. Resolve rubbing before road testing.
- Fit protection: Install a generation-matched skid plate and inspect that it does not interfere with service, heat management or suspension movement.
- Recheck connected systems: Cycle the suspension while inspecting hoses, ABS wires, steering joints, driveshafts, exhaust and differential mounts. Correct any stretch, bind or contact.
- Prepare recovery and spares: Match the jack, spare or repair kit, tools, communication equipment and recovery points to the route and vehicle weight.
- Test progressively: Begin on pavement at low speed, then use a controlled gravel route. Increase roughness only after checking fastener torque, tire marks, leaks, temperatures and alignment.
- Document the configuration: Keep tire pressures, alignment settings, ride-height measurements, part numbers and maintenance dates in the car. This record makes troubleshooting and replacement easier.
Test and tune in a controlled progression
Initial pavement check
Listen for clunks, steering pull, driveline vibration and brake drag. Confirm that the steering returns normally and that the car remains stable during a moderate stop. Reinspect every wheel well for fresh contact marks.
Gravel shakedown
Use a known, low-consequence road. Drive slowly enough to stop immediately if a tire rubs or a warning light appears. Afterward, inspect the skid plate, control-arm brackets, shock bodies, brake hoses, wheel torque and fluid leaks.
Repeated rough-surface sessions
Increase speed only in small steps and only after the car remains predictable. If the car bottoms, bounces, overheats or loses steering precision, identify whether the cause is travel, damping, spring support, tire pressure, alignment or a loose component rather than simply adding more lift.
Desert-distance validation
Before a remote route, complete a long drive that reproduces expected heat, dust and load. Carry the actual spares and tools, verify communications and establish a turnaround point. A car that survives a short photo opportunity has not necessarily demonstrated endurance.

Maintenance after the conversion
- Inspect suspension fasteners, lift brackets, coilover mounts and skid-plate hardware after each rough outing until torque retention is established.
- Check tire sidewalls, bead areas, tread damage, pressure and wheel runout after every rocky or low-pressure session.
- Look for fresh marks on inner fenders, bump stops, brake hoses, ABS wires and exhaust sections.
- Clean dust from the radiator, air filter area and suspension adjusters; follow the component manufacturer’s service intervals.
- Monitor alignment and steering feel. A new pull, vibration or uneven wear is a reason to stop and inspect, not an invitation to compensate with more toe.
- Recheck fluids for contamination or leaks and inspect differential and transmission mounts for movement.
Choosing the right endpoint
For an NA or NB used on maintained dirt roads, a healthy donor, carefully installed clearance-oriented lift, generation-matched tires, measured alignment and skid protection can create a useful recreational car. For rallycross, move toward a matched coilover setup and treat wheel travel, damping and serviceability as primary design targets. For fast desert terrain, expect a purpose-built long-travel system, structural scrutiny and professional safety work rather than a cosmetic lift.
NC and ND owners should not infer compatibility from NA/NB product listings. Begin with chassis-specific documentation and measured clearances. Whatever the generation, the reliable path is the same: define the terrain, inspect the donor, engineer suspension and tires together, protect the underside, validate every change progressively and keep competition claims separate from street recreation.
