To book a Waymo ride, install the Waymo app, complete its setup, and request a trip from a location inside the current service area. Enter your destination, review the pickup and drop-off points and the price estimate, then confirm. Before the car arrives, follow the app’s walking directions and be ready to board quickly. When the vehicle arrives, identify it with the app, unlock it from your phone, tap Start ride, and buckle every passenger.
Waymo vehicles are fully autonomous; on most trips nobody is in the driver’s seat. A vehicle carries up to four riders. Children younger than 8 need a car or booster seat that you bring and install in the rear seat. The app supplies arrival alerts, wayfinding, trip controls and support, but service areas, prices and individual features can change, so the live app is the authority for your trip.

Check that Waymo can serve your trip
Waymo only accepts requests within its operating coverage. Open the app at the place where you intend to be picked up and enter the destination. If either point is outside the live coverage area, you will not receive an immediate ride; the app may instead offer updates about future availability. Coverage can expand, contract or vary by road, airport and freeway, so an old city list is not a reliable eligibility check.

Install and set up the app
Use the official app store on your phone and finish the short account setup before you need a car. Keep your phone charged and allow location access so the app can place you accurately and provide walking directions.

Before requesting a ride, check that your payment and contact details are current in the app. A weak signal, nearly empty battery or disabled location service can make it difficult to find the car at a busy curb, so resolve those issues before booking.
Book the ride step by step
- Open the pickup area. Set your current location or move the map to the place where you will actually stand. Confirm that the app offers a ride there.
- Enter the destination. Type the address, venue or saved place. Waymo may choose a nearby stopping point rather than the exact pin when a street is too narrow, blocked or unsafe for a vehicle to stop.
- Review pickup and drop-off points. Read the walking directions and look at the map. Where the app provides an adjustment option, move the point to another suggested location that is legal and safe. Do not assume the car can stop in a travel lane, on a bike lane or directly in front of a blocked entrance.
- Check the price estimate. The app shows the fare before you confirm. Busy periods can produce a higher estimate. Treat it as the price for the trip you are booking, not as a universal rate for the city.
- Request and monitor. Confirm the request and keep the app open enough to see status changes. Waymo normally sends a warning about one minute before arrival and another notification when the vehicle is ready.
If you change the route after the ride starts, Waymo says an in-trip reroute does not change the price for that trip. That protection applies to a reroute during the booked ride; it does not turn an unconfirmed estimate into a guaranteed price for a future request.

The displayed estimate is the useful answer to “How much will my Waymo ride cost?” because fares depend on the specific origin, destination and conditions at the time you request. Demand can raise the price during busy periods. Check the number on the booking screen immediately before tapping the confirmation control, since a figure seen on an earlier trip or in a screenshot may no longer apply.
- Price visibility: you can inspect the estimate before requesting the vehicle.
- Busy-period changes: higher prices may appear when demand is elevated.
- Rerouting: a route change made during that trip does not change that trip’s price, according to Waymo’s rider guidance.
- Uncertainty: the app’s current estimate is more reliable than a citywide average because coverage, traffic and demand change.
Prepare for pickup
Go to the pickup point before the one-minute warning, not after it. Keep the phone available for the map and notifications, and stand where the app directs. Many pickups allow about five minutes for boarding, but that is not a promise: congestion, a bike lane, construction or a busy curb can shorten the practical wait. If you are not present, the vehicle may cancel and a no-show fee may apply.
When the car cannot reach the pin
Road closures, temporary construction, emergency activity and traffic can prevent a vehicle from stopping exactly at the mapped point. The app may move the meeting point and show walking directions. Follow that route to the adjusted safe location rather than waiting at the original pin or stepping into traffic.

Identify your vehicle
Use the app’s vehicle markers and wayfinding instead of guessing from a distance. Waymo can show identifying details such as initials on the roof dome, and the app includes Find my car and optional sound cues. Match the information in the app before approaching. If several similar vehicles are nearby, do not unlock one that is not assigned to your trip.
Unlock and board
- Wait until the vehicle is fully stopped. Approach from the curb side and keep children close while you identify it.
- Unlock with the app. The car arrives locked. Use the unlock control shown for your trip; do not try to force a door.
- Load belongings. Open the trunk from the app or with the vehicle button if you need it. Keep bags clear of seats, doors and emergency equipment.
- Choose seats safely. The vehicle accommodates up to four riders. Place younger children in the rear seat with their required restraint. A passenger age 8 or older may use the front passenger seat.
- Start the trip. Tap Start ride on the in-car screen or in the app.
- Buckle up. Every rider must fasten a seat belt before the vehicle moves. Check a child’s harness or belt after closing the door.
If the app will not unlock the assigned car, stay at the curb, confirm that Bluetooth, location and mobile data are available, and use Support in the app rather than entering an unassigned vehicle.
Traveling with a child
For a child younger than 8, bring a car seat or booster seat and install it in the rear seat according to the restraint maker’s instructions. Waymo does not remove that responsibility from the rider, so allow extra time before the pickup window closes. Check the seat’s fit, belt routing and harness before tapping Start ride.
Waymo’s guidance permits the front passenger seat for riders age 8 or older. The four-rider capacity includes children, so a large car seat, stroller or luggage can affect how many people and items fit comfortably. If your group needs more than four seats or cannot install the restraint in time, do not request a vehicle you cannot board safely.
Use the in-ride controls
The passenger screen and the Waymo app provide the main controls while you travel. You can view the route, adjust temperature or music where those controls are available, and contact Support at any time.

Add or change stops
You can add up to four stops during a trip. At a stop, at least one person must remain in the vehicle; if everyone exits, the current trip ends. The app may allow you to adjust a pickup or drop-off location when a suitable alternative exists. Follow the new walking instructions rather than directing the vehicle toward an unsafe curb.

Leave before the destination
If you need to get out early, tap Pull over. Waymo will look for a safe place to stop; it will not necessarily stop at the first point you request. Wait for a complete stop before opening a door.
Get help
Use Support in the app or on the passenger screen for trip questions, a vehicle problem or help finding the assigned car. Keep the vehicle stopped and remain buckled unless the app or support instructions tell you otherwise.
Exit correctly at the destination
- Wait until the car has come to a complete stop in the designated area.
- Check the seat pocket, floor, trunk and door compartments for phones, bags and child-seat accessories.
- Open the door only when it is safe to step onto the curb or other designated area.
- Take all belongings and any child restraint you brought.
- Close the door manually after exiting so the vehicle can depart safely.
Rules and practical preparation
- Age: the app user must be 18 or older to ride alone.
- Seat belts: every occupant must wear one for the trip.
- Prohibited items and behavior: no smoking, vaping, drugs or alcohol in the vehicle.
- Service animals: service animals are permitted.
- Child restraints: the rider supplies and installs the appropriate rear-seat car or booster seat for a child under 8.
- Phone readiness: bring enough battery and keep notifications, location and mobile data available for wayfinding and unlocking.
- Pickup readiness: arrive before the warning, because the available wait can be shorter than five minutes in a congested location.

Before you leave home
A few minutes of preparation prevents the most common first-trip problems. Confirm the pickup and destination in the live app, charge your phone, enable location and notifications, and make sure your payment details are current. If a child under 8 is traveling, practice installing the restraint in the rear seat and bring all parts with you. Pack bags so they can be loaded quickly, and allow extra time if the pickup is near a busy curb, bike lane, construction zone or event venue.
Do not depend on a precise arrival time or a remembered fare. Waymo sends a one-minute warning and an arrival alert, but traffic and stopping conditions can change the meeting point or shorten the boarding window. Keep watching the map until the vehicle is identified and unlocked.

What “fully autonomous” means for your first trip
Waymo describes its vehicles as fully autonomous, meaning that on most occasions no one is in the driver’s seat. You still have responsibilities normally handled by a passenger: go to the correct pickup point, verify the assigned car, buckle up, supervise children, keep doors closed and take your belongings. The vehicle handles the driving, while the app and passenger screen provide trip information and controls.

Can children sit in the front seat?
