How to Become an Auto Glass Technician: Training, Certifications, and Apprenticeships

A practical U.S. guide to entering auto-glass work through employer training, technical school, or registered apprenticeship—with clear distinctions between AGSC certification and state licensing.

By CarCody Team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the United States, you can become an auto glass technician without following one mandatory school-to-license path. Most people enter through employer-provided training, a related collision-repair program, or a registered apprenticeship. Basic installation and repair may be learned in about six months, while working independently can take up to a year of training, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The actual timeline depends on the employer, the work you are allowed to perform, and your progress with safety, adhesives, vehicle systems, and glass handling.

AGSC certification can document industry knowledge, but it is not a nationwide government license. A few states require a separate license for automotive glass installation or repair. Before enrolling or accepting a job, confirm the requirements in your state and ask exactly how the employer structures supervision, training, tools, certification, and advancement.

How do I become an auto glass technician?

Start by choosing one of three routes, then build supervised experience in repair, replacement, and vehicle-specific procedures:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Employer training: Apply to an auto-glass, collision-repair, dealership, or mobile-glass employer that trains new hires on the job.
  2. Technical education: Complete a high-school, trade-school, or community-college collision-repair program that includes hands-on glass work or related body-repair skills.
  3. Registered apprenticeship: Find a sponsor offering the occupation title “Glass Installer (Auto Serv)” through the U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship system.

Whichever route you choose, the job is more than removing and installing a windshield. O*NET describes core work that includes assessing damaged glass, choosing the correct parts, selecting tools and safety equipment, carrying out repairs or replacements, and completing related diagnostics. Modern vehicles may also require attention to advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) after glass replacement.

A practical entry plan is to apply for trainee or helper positions, ask what work is performed under supervision, and keep a record of the procedures and vehicle systems you learn. As your employer confirms that you can work safely and accurately, you can move from simpler repairs to more complex replacements and calibrations.

What should an entry-level technician learn first?

  • Safe handling, lifting, storage, and disposal of automotive glass.
  • How to inspect damage and decide whether repair or replacement is appropriate.
  • Preparation, removal, installation, and curing procedures for the vehicle and glass involved.
  • How to identify the correct glass, moldings, clips, adhesives, and other parts.
  • Use and care of tools, personal protective equipment, and vehicle-protection materials.
  • When a replacement can affect cameras, sensors, or other ADAS components and what calibration or diagnostic steps are required.
  • Accurate estimates, documentation, troubleshooting, and customer communication.

Do you need a certification to replace windshields?

There is no universal U.S. requirement that every windshield installer hold the same certification. BLS reports that a few states require a separate license for automotive glass installation or repair, so legal requirements depend on where you work. Check your state’s licensing agency before treating an industry credential as permission to perform regulated work.

The Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC) offers industry credentials. AGSC distinguishes between technician designations used by technicians employed at AGSC Registered Member Companies and designations for technicians who do not work for such a company:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
AGSC designation type Who it applies to What it means
Certified Technicians working for an AGSC Registered Member Company An AGSC credential tied to the membership context described by AGSC
Qualified Technicians who do not work for an AGSC Registered Member Company An AGSC credential for technicians outside that member-company setting

AGSC states that accreditation is valid for three years. Its technician page describes general and master exams as 70-question online tests. Master-exam eligibility requires at least three years in the industry and an AGSC general technician certification. The knowledge areas include OSHA safety, ADAS, replacement procedures, and applicable standards.

AGSC certification is therefore useful as evidence of training and knowledge, and it may be required by an AGSC Registered Member Company as a condition of membership. That company rule is not the same as a nationwide legal mandate. Verify current registration fees, exam rules, renewal steps, and eligibility directly on AGSC’s live accreditation page because those details can change.

How should certification fit into a career plan?

  1. Learn the work under supervision. Certification exams cannot substitute for safe hands-on practice.
  2. Confirm the credential category. Ask whether your employer is an AGSC Registered Member Company and whether you would pursue a Certified or Qualified designation.
  3. Match the exam to your experience. The master credential is not an entry-level option because AGSC requires industry experience and a general certification.
  4. Track the renewal date. Accreditation lasts three years, so retain your records and plan renewal before it expires.
  5. Check state law separately. A state license, if required, may involve an agency application or other conditions unrelated to AGSC accreditation.

How long does auto glass technician training take?

BLS gives a broad estimate rather than a fixed curriculum: basic automotive glass installation and repair can be learned in as little as six months, while becoming fully independent can take up to one year of training. Those figures are not guarantees. A trainee may become competent in routine jobs sooner, or need more time when the employer handles complex vehicles, mobile work, ADAS calibration, or a wider range of repairs.

Training stage Typical focus What controls progress
Initial supervised period Safety, tools, parts identification, vehicle protection, and basic repair or removal tasks Prior mechanical experience, employer instruction, and the complexity of assigned vehicles
Developing technician Complete replacement workflows, adhesive and curing procedures, estimates, and troubleshooting Accuracy, rework rate, documentation, and ability to follow manufacturer or shop procedures
Independent work Planning and completing jobs, recognizing ADAS implications, and resolving problems without constant supervision Demonstrated judgment, safe performance, employer sign-off, and local work requirements

Do not interpret “six months” as a guaranteed graduation date or “one year” as an industry licensing standard. Employers decide which tasks a trainee may perform and when. A good offer explains the progression in writing: the starting duties, who supervises you, how competence is checked, and what qualifies you for independent mobile or shop work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a collision-repair or technical-school program prepare you?

Yes. BLS describes high-school, trade-school, and community-college collision-repair programs that combine technical instruction with hands-on practice. Glass installers may receive practical glass experience within those programs, but a collision-repair course is a related foundation, not a mandatory nationwide auto-glass credential.

What a related program can add

  • Structured practice before you work on customer vehicles.
  • Exposure to vehicle construction, body repair, refinishing, and damage assessment.
  • Instruction in shop safety, measurements, tools, and work documentation.
  • A transcript or completion record to show employers when you have limited work history.
  • A setting in which instructors can correct technique before mistakes become expensive rework.

Questions to ask a school before enrolling

  • How many hours are hands-on rather than classroom-only?
  • Does the curriculum cover both repair and replacement?
  • Does it address ADAS, diagnostics, and calibration after replacement?
  • Are the tools, glass, adhesives, and safety equipment supplied?
  • Is the program on AGSC’s current directory of private training programs whose submitted curricula AGSC reviews for compliance with the AGRSS Standard?
  • What is the schedule, total price, and completion credential?
  • Do graduates receive employer introductions or help preparing for an AGSC exam?

AGSC’s private-training directory is a starting point for checking whether a program has been reviewed under its stated process. Availability, course length, and price remain provider-specific; directory inclusion does not establish that every program is offered in your area or that it guarantees employment.

Are there auto glass apprenticeships near me?

Registered apprenticeships exist for this occupation, but sponsors and openings vary by region. O*NET’s 2026 profile for Automotive Glass Installers and Repairers lists “Glass Installer (Auto Serv)” as an approved apprenticeship title that can be used in a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Program.

How to search for a local apprenticeship

  1. Use Apprenticeship.gov’s occupation search and enter “Glass Installer (Auto Serv)” or related automotive-glass terms.
  2. Filter by your state or commuting area and read the sponsor’s entry requirements, wage schedule, classroom expectations, and application instructions.
  3. Contact local auto-glass shops, collision centers, dealerships, and state apprenticeship offices. Some employers know of upcoming cohorts before a public listing appears.
  4. Ask whether the sponsor is registered, how supervision is documented, what tools are supplied, and which credentials are included.
  5. Confirm the job location and travel requirements. A mobile-glass apprenticeship may involve customer-site work rather than one shop.

What one reported program included

AGSC’s report on the Fix Network Apprenticeship Program described 2,000 hours of paid, supervised on-the-job training under journeyperson-level auto-glass technicians. It also described paid supplementary lessons delivered in person or remotely, seminars, industry conferences, and benefits. The lessons covered windshield repair, replacement, ADAS calibration, diagnostics, troubleshooting, estimates, and tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That report identified availability in Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and Montana, while expansion was being pursued for New Mexico, Arizona, and Alaska. It describes availability at the time of publication, not a permanent service area. Check the sponsor’s current intake, participating employers, and state coverage before relying on it as an option.

The 2,000-hour figure belongs to that reported program. It is not an industrywide requirement for every auto-glass technician or every registered apprenticeship.

How do employer training, school, and apprenticeship compare?

Route Supervised hands-on work Pay and cost questions Best fit Important checks
Employer training Usually begins immediately, with duties assigned according to demonstrated ability Ask whether training is paid and whether the employer covers tools, safety equipment, travel, and exams People who want to enter the workforce quickly and learn a company’s procedures Written progression, supervision, ADAS coverage, and path to independent work
Technical or collision-repair program Structured practice in a school or shop environment; glass depth varies Compare tuition, schedule, supplied equipment, and any exam-preparation cost People who want a broad repair foundation or need classroom support Actual glass hours, repair and replacement coverage, current equipment, and employer connections
Registered apprenticeship Paid work under a sponsor’s supervision plus related instruction Confirm wage progression, benefits, lesson costs, and who pays for tools or certification People who want an earn-while-you-learn structure with documented training Registration status, sponsor location, openings, curriculum, and completion credential

No source establishes one universally best provider or one standard course duration. Compare the options on seven practical points: supervised hours; repair, replacement, and ADAS coverage; current AGSC directory status; employer payment of wages, tuition, or exam costs; location and schedule; certification preparation and renewal support; and whether tools and safety equipment are supplied.

What safety and working conditions should you expect?

Auto-glass work can be physically demanding and may require travel to customer locations. BLS identifies injury risks from overexertion and contact with objects or equipment. It specifically points to proper lifting technique and a face shield for protection from glass shards. O*NET also identifies selecting appropriate tools, safety equipment, and parts as a core task.

  • Required eye, face, hand, and body protection and who supplies it.
  • Vehicle-protection procedures for paint, interiors, trim, and electronics.
  • How the employer handles weather, roadside work, and customer-site hazards.
  • Whether a second person is required for large or difficult glass.
  • How failed installations, damaged trim, leaks, or calibration problems are reported and corrected.

Do not buy a removal kit or other specialized equipment before checking the employer’s policy. “Automotive windshield removal tool kit” is a useful category to research, but workplaces may supply tools, specify approved equipment, or expect a technician to provide only personal protective items.

What does an auto glass technician earn and what is the outlook?

The BLS reported a median annual wage of $47,630 in May 2025 for automotive glass installers and repairers in the United States. This is a national occupational median, not an entry-level salary and not a guarantee for a particular city, employer, schedule, or commission plan.

BLS projects employment for the broader occupational group of automotive body and glass repairers to grow 4 percent from 2025 to 2035. Because the projection combines body and glass repairers, it should not be presented as an auto-glass-only growth rate.

When comparing offers, look beyond the headline wage. Ask about paid training, overtime, travel time, mobile-work allowances, benefits, commission or productivity formulas, certification costs, and whether slow periods affect hours. Those terms can change the practical value of an offer even when two jobs list similar pay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should you evaluate a job or program before committing?

  1. Verify the legal setting. Check whether your state requires a license separate from any industry certification.
  2. Define the work. Find out whether the role includes repair, replacement, mobile calls, ADAS calibration, estimates, or only support tasks.
  3. Get the training plan. Ask who supervises you, how progress is signed off, and what must happen before independent work.
  4. Count real practice. Identify the expected supervised hours and the mix of vehicle types and procedures.
  5. Check equipment. Confirm who supplies glass, tools, protective equipment, diagnostic equipment, and calibration resources.
  6. Confirm credential details. Ask whether AGSC preparation is included, which designation applies, and who pays exam and renewal costs.
  7. Check current availability. Training directories and apprenticeship locations change; verify that the class or sponsor is accepting applicants now.
  8. Review compensation. Separate guaranteed wages from bonuses, commission, travel reimbursement, benefits, and unpaid study time.

Months 2–6: build safe fundamentals

Work on tool selection, parts identification, damage assessment, repair and replacement procedures, and safe lifting and glass handling. Keep a log of completed tasks and corrections. Do not perform unsupervised work merely because a calendar date has passed.

Months 6–12: expand toward independence

With employer approval, take on more complete jobs, troubleshooting, estimates, and ADAS-related steps. Use documented performance—not a promised date—as the basis for moving to independent work. If AGSC certification is part of your plan, check the current exam and eligibility requirements while your experience is accumulating.

After the first year: maintain and specialize

Continue learning vehicle-specific procedures, calibration requirements, new glass and sensor designs, and safe mobile-work practices. Keep certifications and any state license current, and periodically compare your responsibilities and compensation with the skills you now perform.

Common mistakes that slow entry into the trade

  • Assuming certification is a license: AGSC accreditation and state authorization are separate matters.
  • Choosing a course by title alone: Confirm actual hands-on glass hours and ADAS content.
  • Buying tools too early: The employer or school may supply equipment or require specific tools.
  • Treating a time estimate as a guarantee: Six months or one year describes a broad BLS range, not a promise of independence.
  • Ignoring mobile-work conditions: Travel, weather, lifting, and customer-site hazards should be part of the job decision.
  • Relying on an old apprenticeship listing: Sponsors, states, and intake dates change; verify current participation.
  • Using testimonials as forecasts: Individual apprenticeship experiences do not predict typical wages or outcomes.

What is the most practical path for you?

If you need income quickly, start with employers that offer paid supervision and ask for a written progression to independent work. If you want broad mechanical context before entering a shop, a collision-repair program can provide structured practice. If you prefer documented, earn-while-you-learn training, search for the registered occupation title “Glass Installer (Auto Serv)” and contact sponsors in your area.

Whichever route you select, prioritize verified hands-on training, safe work practices, repair and replacement competence, ADAS awareness, and a clear understanding of state rules. Add AGSC certification when its credential structure fits your employer and career plans, but do not confuse it with a universal legal requirement.
