The workable solution is one shared plan for school deadlines, race weekends, travel, training, recovery and sponsor deliverables, with conflicts identified before they become emergencies. A calendar coordinates people; it cannot prove that every commitment is sustainable. Review the plan with a parent or guardian, school staff and the racing team, and change the workload when sleep, learning or safety starts to suffer.
Why this is a workload problem, not a time-management trick
A young driver is often carrying three different kinds of responsibility at once: compulsory education, performance preparation and commercial obligations. Each has a different definition of “done.” School may require attendance and comprehension, not merely submitted work. Racing adds travel, practice, engineering meetings, physical training and recovery. Sponsorship can add appearances, content, hospitality and reporting deadlines.

A recent FIA Formula 3 profile of Brando Badoer shows why a simple promise to study later can fail. During his rookie campaign he was completing high school, making up missed classes and preparing for exams. He said, “Balancing everything alongside racing is not really easy, because racing takes up a lot of my time.” The same interview reports that he had attended school only “four or five days” over the preceding four months. That is one driver’s account, not a normal schedule or a target for other students.

The issue also appears in junior-driver recruitment. An FIA Formula 2 feature on driver recruitment notes that younger drivers may have sponsorship commitments while still needing to attend school or college. The practical conclusion is to coordinate all three obligations early, rather than treating school as whatever time remains after racing and sponsor work.
Build one master calendar before the season gets busy
Use a shared digital calendar or a paper planner that the driver, parent or guardian, school contact and team can all see. The calendar should expose collisions; it is not a promise that every week will fit.
- Enter immovable school dates first. Add attendance requirements, exam sessions, coursework deadlines, presentations, practical assessments and school events. Record the time zone and the final submission time when relevant.
- Add the complete racing schedule. Include testing, simulator sessions, technical briefings, scrutineering, media calls, race sessions, travel days and the time needed to get home. A race weekend is longer than the on-track timetable.
- Block training and recovery. Put physical conditioning, meals, sleep, medical appointments and decompression on the calendar as real commitments. Do not use recovery time as an automatic reservoir for homework or sponsor content.
- Enter only agreed sponsor work. For every appearance, post, filming session or hospitality obligation, record the deliverable, owner, due date, location, travel time and approval deadline. Do not schedule vague promises such as “more content.”
- Add buffers. Travel delays, timetable changes, fatigue and mechanical incidents are normal possibilities. Leave protected space before exams and after long trips instead of booking every available hour.
- Mark clashes at least one week ahead. A color code can distinguish school, racing, travel, training, recovery and sponsor work. A clash is a decision to make with adults, not a reason for the teen to quietly drop one obligation.
- Hold a short weekly review. Confirm what changed, what must be delivered, who is waiting for an answer and whether the driver is sleeping and learning adequately. Move or renegotiate work before the deadline passes.
There is no evidence for a universal weekly timetable. The right amount of study, training and sponsor work depends on the driver’s age, school rules, series calendar, travel distance, health and contract.

Before committing to a race programme
Ask the school or college for its written rules on attendance, assessments, travel-related absence, make-up work and examinations. Identify one staff contact who can explain what was missed and what is assessed. Ask whether tutoring, recorded lessons, office hours or another support exists, but do not assume that remote attendance, excused absences or special exam arrangements will be available; those decisions depend on the institution and local regulations.

Map the academic year against the proposed race calendar. A series with fewer clashes may be more sustainable than one with a prestigious but travel-heavy schedule. Include exam preparation weeks, not only exam dates. A missed lesson immediately before an exam can create more work than the number of hours absent suggests.
During travel and missed classes
Carry a current assignment list, required materials and contact details for teachers. Ask for the learning objective and any prerequisite explanation, rather than only a worksheet. If the driver cannot understand a topic independently, flag it quickly; waiting until the night before an examination converts a small gap into a crisis.
Protect a realistic study block during travel, but do not label every flight or hotel hour as productive. Noise, fatigue and changing schedules reduce comprehension. A parent or tutor can check whether the driver can explain the material, not merely whether pages were completed.

After a race weekend
Schedule a recovery period and a short school catch-up review. Separate urgent graded work from background reading, then arrange help for concepts that were taught in person. Keep evidence of submitted work and agreed extensions in one place so the student does not have to reconstruct the history while preparing for the next event.

Design a race-week operating rhythm
| Timing | Primary action | What to protect |
|---|---|---|
| 7–14 days before travel | Confirm school deadlines, team schedule, travel and sponsor deliverables in the shared calendar. | Time to ask teachers questions and finish work that cannot travel. |
| Travel and setup days | Use a small, defined study task; complete only pre-approved sponsor work. | Meals, hydration, sleep and arrival readiness. |
| Practice and qualifying | Follow the team’s performance schedule and record any timetable changes immediately. | Concentration, briefing time and recovery between sessions. |
| Race day | Prioritize competition duties; deliver only sponsor activity that the team and guardian have confirmed. | Safety, warm-up, nutrition and post-session medical or engineering checks. |
| Return day and next 24 hours | Log missed work, send necessary school updates and move non-urgent content if fatigue is high. | Sleep and a safe transition home. |
| First non-race week | Close academic gaps, review performance and confirm the next set of obligations. | A genuinely lighter period rather than another fully booked week. |
The table is a coordination model, not a prescription. The team may impose different operational requirements, and a school may set attendance rules that override a preferred study block.
Turn sponsor work into specific, reviewable commitments
Commercial pressure becomes manageable when everyone can see exactly what was promised. Keep a deliverable register alongside the calendar.
| Field | Example entry | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Deliverable | One approved video, two event appearances or a set number of posts | Prevents an open-ended request from expanding. |
| Due date and time zone | Friday, 18:00 local time | Avoids confusion when travel crosses borders. |
| Location and duration | Track hospitality suite, 90 minutes | Reveals travel and recovery costs, not just appearance time. |
| Approver | Named team or sponsor contact | Shows who must clear wording, images and usage rights. |
| Adult owner | Parent or guardian confirms the request | Stops a minor from negotiating alone under deadline pressure. |
| Fallback | Reschedule, remote message or substitute asset if approved | Creates a safe response to a race or school clash. |
The FIA Young Driver Safety Programme: Best Practice Framework, published in February 2017, describes age-sensitive teaching, educational partners, funding and contracts that specify financial and ambassadorial responsibilities. It is a programme-design framework, not current legal advice for every country.
Because the driver is a minor, involve a parent or guardian in commitments and seek qualified local legal advice when reviewing a contract, release, exclusivity clause, image-usage term, travel requirement or payment arrangement. The exact legal duties and enforceability vary by jurisdiction. A clear contract should identify what the driver must do, what the sponsor supplies, how approval works, how cancellations are handled and who can end or amend the arrangement.

Compare schooling options by fit, not by label
There is no evidence in the available sources that ranks public school, private school, online learning, home education or a hybrid arrangement for racing drivers. Families can compare the options they are legally allowed to use against the same practical criteria.
| Decision criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Continuity of instruction | Can the student reach qualified teachers and receive explanations when absent? |
| Attendance and exam compatibility | Does the arrangement satisfy local attendance, assessment and examination rules? |
| Travel flexibility | Can lessons and assessments function during race travel without relying on unstable internet or late-night work? |
| Total time and cost | What are tuition, tutoring, equipment, administration and travel costs, and who manages them? |
| Sleep, recovery and family life | Does the schedule leave protected rest and ordinary family contact? |
| Responsibility and safeguarding | Who handles sponsor requests, welfare concerns, complaints and emergency decisions? |
Choose the arrangement that keeps learning demonstrable and support reachable, not the one that merely appears most flexible on paper.

Performance planning is incomplete if it ignores welfare. The FIA’s safeguarding principles include individual welfare, equality and inclusion, accountability and confidentiality. In October 2024, the FIA announced its “Driven by Respect” standards and described processes for reporting, investigation, resolution, sanctions and confidentiality. The announcement also notes that implementation depends on the event category and the date of rollout; check the current policy and reporting channel for the relevant series, club, team or national authority.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA President, said: “Everyone involved in the world of motorsport deserves the right to feel safe, and as the governing body we have a duty of care to protect this right.” Read the current FIA safeguarding announcement and ask the team for its applicable procedure.

- Ensure the teen knows they can speak to a parent or guardian and another trusted adult if the first route feels unsafe.
- Keep private welfare information restricted to people who need it to respond; do not turn a concern into public sponsor content.
- Treat coercion, harassment, discriminatory conduct, unsafe travel, pressure to train while injured or demands that threaten schooling as issues to escalate, not as evidence of commitment.
Use a weekly academic planner as a visibility tool
A weekly planner can place assignments, exams, travel, training and sponsor tasks on one page. The FIA’s Education and Training material supports the general importance of education, but no cited source tests a particular planner or shows that planners improve grades or racing results. Its value here is practical: it externalizes the workload so adults can spot an impossible week.
| Day | School task | Racing or travel | Sponsor task | Recovery check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | Draft history assignment; teacher question | Strength session | None | Normal bedtime |
| Tuesday | Math problem set | Simulator briefing | Approve captions with adult | Protect evening meal |
| Wednesday | Science lab preparation | Travel to circuit | One pre-booked appearance | No late-night editing |
| Thursday | Short review only | Practice sessions | Deliver approved asset | Nap or quiet break if team permits |
| Friday–Sunday | Carry only agreed, small tasks | Qualifying and races | Team-confirmed hospitality | Sleep, meals and medical checks |
Replace the example entries with real deadlines and names. If the planner repeatedly requires midnight work, omitted meals or missed lessons, change the commitments rather than decorating the planner.
Use a conflict protocol instead of improvising
- Describe the collision precisely. “Chemistry exam at 09:00 and sponsor appearance at 09:30” is actionable; “everything is busy” is not.
- Identify the non-negotiable rule. Check the school’s assessment policy, the team’s sporting timetable and the written sponsor agreement.
- Offer two realistic alternatives. Examples include completing an appearance remotely, moving it to an agreed window, substituting an approved asset or changing travel plans. Do not promise an accommodation that the school or sponsor has not accepted.
- Get the decision in writing. Record who approved the change, the new deadline and any effect on payment, attendance or selection.
- Escalate early. If adults cannot agree, the parent or guardian should involve the school lead, team manager or contract adviser before the deadline.
When safety, health or safeguarding is involved, those concerns take priority over publicity or a performance target. Follow the relevant reporting and medical procedures.
Give each adult a defined job
- Driver: reports workload, fatigue, confusion about schoolwork and any uncomfortable request promptly; keeps the agreed planner up to date.
- Parent or guardian: coordinates the calendar, checks contracts and travel, monitors sleep and wellbeing, and makes sure the teen is not negotiating commercial terms alone.
- School contact: clarifies attendance, assessment and support options and identifies learning gaps.
- Team: supplies the real timetable, protects required recovery, names a welfare contact and communicates changes quickly.
- Sponsor contact: sends specific, approved deliverables and respects the agreed schedule, school obligations and cancellation process.
One person should own the master calendar, but no single person should be expected to solve school, racing, commercial and safeguarding decisions without the relevant specialist.
Recognize when the plan is no longer sustainable
- Sleep is repeatedly shortened to finish homework or sponsor work.
- The driver attends lessons but cannot explain the material or is accumulating unaddressed gaps.
- Recovery, meals, medical care or injury reporting are being skipped.
- School, team or sponsor deadlines are missed despite a full calendar.
- The teen is afraid to disclose fatigue, a safeguarding concern or a contract request.
- Every “buffer” is consumed by new obligations and no adult is renegotiating the load.
These are signals to pause, reduce travel or deliverables, seek educational or medical support and review the racing programme. They are not proof that the driver lacks discipline.
Questions to settle before signing up
- Which school dates cannot move, and who confirms the answer?
- What exactly must the driver deliver for each sponsor, by when and with whose approval?
- Who pays for tutoring, travel, equipment and missed-work support?
- What happens if a race, illness, injury, exam or safeguarding concern makes a deliverable impossible?
- Who can the teen contact privately about welfare or pressure?
- What evidence will show that learning is keeping pace: teacher feedback, assessments, tutoring reports or another agreed measure?
- When will the adults review whether the arrangement still protects sleep, health, education and family life?
Bottom line
Balance is achieved by making every obligation visible, negotiating clashes before they occur and protecting learning, recovery and safety as fixed requirements. Use the calendar and planner to coordinate people, insist on specific sponsor commitments, involve a parent or guardian in contracts, and revise the programme whenever the evidence shows that the teen is no longer learning or recovering properly.
