Establish the cold pressure printed on your Bronco’s tire label, then treat Ford’s general off-road guidance as context rather than a beach-specific target. The correct setting depends on your tire, wheel, load, vehicle configuration, and the sand you are crossing. Carry a separate pressure gauge and a compressor, and restore the label pressure before driving on pavement.
The pressure Ford actually publishes
Ford’s From the Road guidance (2026) says, “A typical air down level is 20-25 PSI, compared to 30-35 PSI on-road.” That is general off-road guidance, not a Bronco beach specification. It does not establish that every Bronco, tire size, wheel, axle load, or beach should use 20, 25, or any other fixed pressure.

| Reference | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bronco tire label | The vehicle-specific recommended cold inflation pressure | Use this as your road-pressure baseline and restore it before pavement driving. |
| Ford general off-road guidance | 20-25 PSI as a typical air-down level, contrasted with 30-35 PSI on-road | Use only as broad context while evaluating your exact setup; it is not a beach prescription. |
| Your conditions | Sand firmness, tire and wheel configuration, vehicle load, temperature, and local restrictions | These determine whether an air-down choice is appropriate and how cautiously you must drive. |
Do not select a pressure simply because another Bronco used it. A number that worked for a lightly loaded vehicle with one tire construction may be unsuitable for a different Bronco, tire, wheel, or load. If your owner’s manual gives a more specific instruction for your configuration, follow the manual.

Before you remove air, locate the tire-information label on your Bronco. The 2025 Bronco owner’s manual says the label is next to the tire size on the B-pillar or on the edge of the driver’s door. Read the recommended cold inflation pressure for the vehicle, not a number molded into the tire sidewall. The sidewall marking is a tire limit or specification, not a substitute for the vehicle maker’s setting.

Check the pressure with a stand-alone tire gauge. Ford’s manual expressly warns: “Do not use the tire pressure displayed in the information display as a tire pressure gauge.” The vehicle display is useful for monitoring the tire-pressure system, but it is not the measuring instrument you should use while setting pressures on the beach.
Measure when the tires are cold whenever practical. Ford’s 2025 manual notes that a hot tire can read approximately 4 PSI higher after more than three minutes or one mile of driving. If the tires are warm, use the manual’s complete hot-pressure instructions rather than trying to make a cold-pressure number match a hot reading.
Write down the label pressure before leaving home. That simple reference prevents guessing when the tires are sandy, warm, or partly deflated. It also gives you a clear end point for the return trip: the objective is not merely to add some air, but to verify the vehicle’s recommended road pressure on every tire.

Why beach driving has no universal Bronco PSI
Air removal can increase the tire’s footprint and allow the tread to conform to loose sand, but the safe amount of deflation is limited by the tire, wheel, speed, load, and terrain. The available Ford material does not provide a beach-specific pressure chart or a tested adjustment for different sand conditions. That means the responsible goal is not to chase the lowest possible number; it is to use the least deflation that gives the needed flotation while preserving control and protecting the tire.
| Factor | Why it matters | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Sand surface | Firm, damp sand supports a vehicle differently from soft, dry, churned, or rutted sand. | Start conservatively and reassess traction and steering response before making any further change. |
| Tire construction and size | Sidewall stiffness, load rating, tread design, and wheel diameter affect how the tire behaves when deflated. | Use the tire and vehicle maker’s instructions; do not copy a pressure from a different tire setup. |
| Vehicle load | Passengers, recovery gear, cargo, and roof loads increase the load carried by the tires. | Account for the actual loaded Bronco, not an empty-vehicle example. |
| Speed and maneuvering | Lower pressure reduces the margin for sharp steering, impacts, and sudden direction changes. | Keep speed low and inputs smooth while the tires are aired down. |
| Exit route | A beach access road can change from sand to gravel or pavement quickly. | Plan where you will stop and reinflate before reaching a faster road surface. |
Soft sand is not a reason to assume that a lower number is always safer. If the Bronco is heavily loaded, if the wheels and tires differ from the factory setup, or if the route includes firm access roads, the useful setting and the risk margin can change. Ford’s 20–25 PSI range should therefore be read as a starting point for understanding general off-road practice, not as permission to go directly to 20 PSI.
There is also no supported conversion from one sand condition to a precise PSI adjustment. Firm sand, soft sand, ruts, and a changing tide can all alter the result, but the available Ford guidance does not quantify those changes. Use measured pressure, low speed, and vehicle behavior to decide whether to stop, change your route, or return to firmer ground.

Checks to complete before airing down
- Read the label and manual. Record the cold road pressure for your exact Bronco and tire configuration.
- Inspect every tire. Look for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, embedded objects, damaged valve stems, or a wheel that has already taken an impact. Airing down a damaged tire increases the chance of failure.
- Confirm the load. Account for passengers, luggage, tools, recovery equipment, and anything mounted to the vehicle.
- Check the beach’s access rules. Some beaches restrict vehicle access, driving areas, times, or equipment. The applicable authority for that beach is the only reliable source for its current rules.
- Pack a real gauge and compressor. The gauge lets you set and verify pressure; the compressor lets you return to road pressure before pavement driving.
- Choose a safe stopping area. Pull completely clear of moving traffic, surf, pedestrians, and soft shoulders before working around the vehicle.
- Check your equipment before the trip. Confirm that the gauge operates, the compressor powers from the Bronco’s available connection, and the hose and fittings reach each valve. The exact compressor capacity and fill time depend on the equipment and tire setup.
Do not air down merely because a beach permits vehicles. The vehicle should already be in sound condition, the route should be legal, and you should know where you can safely reinflate. If you cannot carry a compressor or reach one before pavement, reconsider airing down at all.
How to air down a Bronco step by step
- Park and secure the Bronco. Stop on a stable area, select the appropriate park or gear setting, apply the parking brake, and keep the vehicle clear of traffic. Avoid stopping where waves, tides, or other vehicles can reach it.
- Take a baseline reading. With the stand-alone gauge, measure each tire and note the readings. Differences can reveal an existing leak or a gauge problem before you intentionally remove air.
- Remove one valve cap at a time. Keep caps clean so grit does not enter the valve. Use a purpose-built deflation tool or the gauge’s release function if your equipment has one; do not improvise with objects that can damage the valve core.
- Bleed a small amount, then measure. Deflate gradually and check the same tire again with the gauge. The source material does not establish a universal increment or deflation time, so rely on measured readings rather than counting seconds.
- Keep the axle pressures consistent. Compare left and right tires on the same axle and correct obvious differences. Consistency helps the Bronco track predictably; do not assume that a dashboard display has confirmed the setting.
- Stop at a conservative, deliberate setting. Use the Ford off-road range only as general context and stay within instructions for your tire and vehicle. Do not continue lowering pressure simply because the vehicle still moves.
- Replace the valve caps and store the gauge. Sand and salt can contaminate valve hardware. Keep the gauge protected so it is ready for another check.
- Drive a short, low-speed test section. Observe whether the Bronco tracks straight, steers normally, and moves without excessive wheel spin. If control worsens, stop and reassess rather than compensating with speed.
Check all four readings with the same gauge and in the same manner. A single low reading may indicate a leak or valve problem rather than a need to lower the other tires. If a tire will not hold the measured setting, stop the outing and address the tire instead of repeatedly compensating with more air removal.
Driving on the beach while aired down
Use smooth steering, throttle, and braking. Sudden inputs can break traction or place high loads on a partially deflated tire. Avoid spinning the tires; wheel spin digs holes, heats the tread, and can leave you more deeply stuck. Follow existing vehicle corridors where permitted, and stay alert for ruts, buried debris, rocks, drop-offs, washouts, and changing water levels.
Ford’s guidance says to drive at highway speeds only with the vehicle’s recommended pressure. An aired-down Bronco is therefore not set up for a highway transfer. Keep the speed appropriate to the surface and conditions, and plan the route so you can reinflate before entering a road where normal traffic speed is expected.
Monitor how the vehicle feels rather than treating a pressure number as a guarantee. A tire that feels vague, rolls excessively on the rim, loses its bead, or shows damage requires an immediate stop. Do not continue because the pressure is within a range someone else used.
Keep extra distance from pedestrians and other vehicles, and avoid stopping in the active travel line. Sand can hide objects and sudden changes in firmness. If the Bronco begins to bog down, reduce unnecessary wheel spin and reassess the line, load, and conditions rather than automatically removing more air.

Reinflate before you reach pavement
Ford’s From the Road guidance specifically says to carry a compressor to air back up before hitting pavement, or to lower your speed until you can reach a compressor. Treat reinflation as part of the beach procedure, not an optional cleanup task.
- Find a safe reinflation point. Stop on firm ground away from traffic and pedestrians. Do not use a narrow road shoulder if a safer area is available.
- Connect the compressor correctly. Follow the compressor manufacturer’s instructions, use a suitable power connection, and keep the hose away from hot or moving components.
- Inflate one tire at a time and measure. Use the stand-alone gauge to check progress. The time required depends on the compressor, tire volume, starting pressure, temperature, and power supply; no universal fill time can be assumed.
- Set the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure. Use the value on the Bronco’s tire label and account for the manual’s instructions if the tires are warm. Do not substitute the information-display reading for the gauge.
- Check all tires again. Verify left-to-right consistency, reinstall valve caps, and inspect for cuts, bulges, bead movement, or objects picked up on the beach.
- Drive normally only after the checks are complete. If you cannot restore the recommended pressure, avoid highway speeds and reach appropriate service or a compressor using the lowest safe speed and route available.
Allow enough time for the compressor to work; Ford recommends carrying one, but neither Ford’s article nor the Bronco manual establishes a universal compressor size or inflation time. A portable 12V compressor is directly relevant because it provides a way to return to road pressure, while a separate gauge verifies whether the target has actually been reached.
Use Bronco drive modes appropriately
Bronco Sand mode is an off-road mode intended to help manage driving in sand. Selecting a mode does not replace correct tire pressure, smooth driving, or a safe route. Use the mode instructions for your model and equipment, and remember that the tire-pressure requirement still applies when you leave the sand.
Before ordinary roads, return to an on-road mode as directed by the applicable owner’s manual. Confirm that the vehicle is back at the recommended road pressure before building speed. A drive mode cannot make an aired-down tire suitable for highway travel.
Underinflation risks you should not ignore
Ford’s Bronco manual warns that underinflation can cause tire failure, internal damage, irregular wear, and loss of vehicle control. These are not merely long-term wear concerns: a damaged or overheated tire can fail during the drive back from the beach.
- Do not use a warning light as a target. A tire-pressure warning indicates a system condition; it does not define a safe sand pressure.
- Do not lower pressure to solve every traction problem. Excessive wheel spin, the wrong line, deep ruts, or an overloaded vehicle may be the real issue.
- Do not make abrupt steering changes. A softer tire has less resistance to sidewall deflection and can respond differently to a sharp maneuver.
- Do not continue after visible damage. Stop, inspect, and repair or replace the tire as appropriate.
- Do not assume a short pavement section is harmless. Ford’s highway-speed warning applies whenever the vehicle is driven at highway speed, so reinflate before joining normal traffic.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
Copying a forum number
Online beach-driving reports often omit tire construction, wheel size, vehicle load, sand condition, and speed. Use those stories, if you encounter them, only as unverified anecdotes. The vehicle label, owner’s manual, measured pressure, and current conditions are the relevant controls for your Bronco.

Using the dashboard as the gauge
The manual’s warning is explicit: the information display is not a tire pressure gauge. Carry and use a separate gauge for deflation and reinflation.
Forgetting the return trip
Airing down at the entrance without carrying a compressor creates a problem at the exit. Plan the reinflation location before driving onto the beach.
Driving too fast after deflation
Ford limits highway-speed driving to the vehicle’s recommended pressure. Keep the aired-down portion slow and controlled, then reinflate before pavement.
Measuring a hot tire as though it were cold
Pressure changes with temperature. Ford’s 2025 manual identifies an approximate 4 PSI increase after more than three minutes or one mile of driving. Follow the manual’s hot-pressure procedure instead of correcting a warm reading blindly.
Leaving the valve hardware exposed
Sand and salt can contaminate valve components. Work with clean caps, replace each cap after measuring, and inspect the valves again before inflating.

A practical beach-day checklist
- Vehicle tire label located and road pressure recorded.
- Owner’s manual available for the exact Bronco configuration.
- All tires inspected for damage before departure.
- Actual passenger and cargo load considered.
- Beach access and driving restrictions checked with the local authority.
- Separate, functioning pressure gauge packed.
- Portable compressor packed and tested with the available power connection.
- Safe stopping points identified for airing down and airing back up.
- Low-speed route planned for the aired-down section.
- Road pressure restored and verified before normal pavement speeds.
The safest answer to “What PSI should I use?” is therefore vehicle-specific: begin with the pressure on your Bronco’s label, use Ford’s 20-25 PSI figure only as broad off-road context, make measured and conservative changes for the actual sand and load, and return to the label pressure before pavement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 20–25 PSI safe for every Bronco on the beach?
No. Ford’s 2026 From the Road article calls 20–25 PSI a typical general off-road range compared with 30–35 PSI on-road, but it is not a beach-specific setting for every Bronco, tire, wheel, load, or sand condition. Check your vehicle label and owner’s manual, then make only measured, conservative changes.
Where do I find my Bronco’s recommended road pressure?
The 2025 Bronco owner’s manual says the tire label is next to the tire size on the B-pillar or on the edge of the driver’s door. Use the recommended cold pressure shown there as the road baseline and restore it before pavement driving.
Can I use the Bronco’s dashboard pressure reading while airing down?
No. Ford warns, “Do not use the tire pressure displayed in the information display as a tire pressure gauge.” Use a separate, functioning tire-pressure gauge for both deflation and reinflation.
What equipment should I bring?
Bring a stand-alone pressure gauge and a portable compressor. Ford specifically recommends carrying a compressor so you can air back up before hitting pavement. The exact compressor capacity and fill time depend on the compressor, tire size, starting pressure, temperature, and power connection.
How fast can I drive with the tires aired down?
Keep speed low and inputs smooth on the beach. Ford says to drive at highway speeds only with the vehicle’s recommended pressure, so reinflate before entering a highway or other road where normal traffic speed is expected.
Should I use Sand mode instead of airing down?
Sand mode is an off-road drive mode intended to help manage sand driving, but it does not replace appropriate tire pressure, a safe route, smooth control, or reinflation before pavement. Follow the instructions for your specific Bronco.
What if one tire loses pressure or looks damaged?
Stop and inspect it. Ford identifies underinflation risks including tire failure, internal damage, irregular wear, and loss of vehicle control. Do not keep driving or lower the other tires to match a leaking or damaged tire.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How do I know when reinflation is complete?
Use the separate gauge to set every tire to the recommended pressure on the Bronco’s label, following the manual’s instructions if the tires are warm. Check all four tires again, reinstall valve caps, and inspect for cuts, bulges, bead movement, or objects before driving at normal road speed.
The Bottom Line
Ford does not publish one universal Bronco beach PSI. Use the tire label and owner’s manual for your vehicle-specific road baseline; regard 20–25 PSI only as general off-road context; adjust gradually with a real gauge; drive slowly and smoothly; and carry a compressor so every tire can be returned to the recommended pressure before pavement.
