Use its wall distance, beam target, vehicle loading instructions and permitted adjuster—not a generic diagram. A 25 ft setup appears in some manufacturer procedures, but the correct distance and target vary by vehicle.
Start with the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle
Headlight aiming is not a one-size-fits-all adjustment. The location of the beam cutoff, the wall distance, the load in the vehicle and even whether horizontal adjustment is available can differ by vehicle and lamp assembly. A target copied from another car—or a general rule about how far a beam should drop—can leave your lights aimed incorrectly.

Find the manual for your vehicle’s year, model, trim and market, then look for its headlight aiming or adjustment instructions. Follow them only if they describe a procedure appropriate to your vehicle. If the manual directs you to a dealer or service facility, or the vehicle has automatic leveling or a special aiming system, follow that direction rather than improvising a wall test.
This vehicle-specific approach is consistent with NHTSA’s FMVSS No. 108 test procedure: aiming instructions must be specific to the aiming mechanism installed, and users are directed to the operator’s manual for complete instructions. The procedure is not a substitute for a vehicle’s own adjustment directions.

Check that the instructions match the lamps actually fitted to your car as well as its model year. A procedure for a different trim, market or headlamp assembly may use a different reference or adjuster. If the manual is unclear, or its diagram does not match the vehicle, do not guess at the screw or beam position. Confirm the correct procedure with the manufacturer or a service facility.
What the manufacturer examples show—and what they do not
The published procedures below demonstrate why distance and target must be treated as a pair. They are examples for their stated vehicles or contexts, not interchangeable instructions for every car.
| Procedure | Distance and target | Vehicle condition or adjustment notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Ford Super Duty Owner’s Manual | Approximately 25 ft (7.6 m); measure lamp-center height and mark a horizontal reference line. Use the manual’s target for this vehicle. | Names a model- or series-specific screwdriver or hex key. Horizontal aim is not required or adjustable on this vehicle. Ford says the headlamps are properly aimed at the assembly plant and advises prompt checking after an accident. |
| NHTSA-hosted Chevrolet owner’s manual | Light-colored wall 25 ft away; low beams and the manual’s target. | Calls for level ground, the vehicle perpendicular to the wall, normal vehicle loading, proper tire pressure and a person or equivalent weight in the driver’s seat. Recommends dealer service when adjustment is needed. |
| Toyota 2019 recall technical instructions | At 7.62 m (25 ft), the cited procedure gives a target tolerance of 101.6 mm (4 in.) above/below and left/right. At exactly 3 m (9.84 ft), it gives 39.9 mm (1.57 in.). | Specifies tire-pressure checks, driver-equivalent load and settling the suspension. These tolerances belong to the cited recall procedure, not a general target for home adjustment. |
| North Carolina State Highway Patrol inspection guidance, February 2026 | Uses a 25 ft setup in its inspection context. | Specifies a darkened area, flat floor and white screen or wall. Its inspection chart is not a universal manufacturer target. |
The Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota documents use vehicle-specific aiming references; the details above are not a shared target that can be applied to an unlisted car. Toyota’s two distances, in particular, have different corresponding target tolerances. Do not move the vehicle to one distance and retain the target from another.

The comparison is useful when deciding what to look for in your own manual, not when choosing a substitute procedure. Compare the exact vehicle and lamp assembly; the specified distance and matching target; the low-beam reference; which adjustment axes are permitted; any required tool; and the prescribed tire pressure, load, steering and suspension condition. A number that appears in several procedures is not automatically right for your car.
The Toyota figures illustrate the pairing especially clearly: its 2019 recall instructions specify a 101.6 mm (4 in.) target tolerance at 7.62 m (25 ft), but a 39.9 mm (1.57 in.) tolerance at exactly 3 m (9.84 ft). Those are not interchangeable estimates or general beam-drop rules. They apply to the cited repair procedure. Likewise, North Carolina’s 25 ft inspection setup describes that inspection context; it does not establish the target for every manufacturer.

Prepare the vehicle and wall before checking the beam
Gather the exact manual, a tape measure, a suitable marking method such as masking tape if the manual permits it, and only the adjustment tool specified for your vehicle. Choose a flat, level surface and a light-colored, vertical wall or screen. The area must be dark enough to see the beam reference if the procedure requires it.
Set up the vehicle exactly as the manual directs. Tire pressure, fuel or cargo load, steering position and suspension condition can affect the result. Some procedures require settling the suspension. For example, Chevrolet’s cited procedure specifies normal load and a person or equivalent weight in the driver’s seat; Toyota’s recall instructions call for tire-pressure checks, driver-equivalent load and suspension settling. Do not assume those preparations apply to every vehicle—use the ones in your own manual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore switching on the lights, check that the ground is level where the vehicle sits and where the beam is being read. A sloped surface or a car parked at an angle can make a wall comparison misleading. Put the vehicle square to the wall, rather than relying on a beam that only appears close to a marked line from an oblique position. Use the wall distance stated in the manual, measured carefully with a tape measure.
Prepare the car in the order the procedure calls for. If it specifies tire pressure or a driver-equivalent load, set those conditions before judging the pattern. If it directs you to settle the suspension, do that before marking the reference or reading the beam. Do not add passengers or cargo simply because another manufacturer’s instructions call for them; the required vehicle condition is specific to the procedure.
- Measure the prescribed wall distance. Mark the vehicle’s starting position and use the distance stated for your vehicle. The 25 ft (7.6 m) distance in the Ford and Chevrolet examples is not a universal rule.
- Square the vehicle to the wall. Position it perpendicular to the surface, as the applicable procedure requires, and keep it on level ground.
- Set the specified load and condition. Check tire pressure and arrange occupants, cargo, steering and suspension as directed. If the instructions call for a settled suspension, complete that step before marking or judging the beam.
- Mark the reference points. If instructed, measure the center height of each headlamp and mark the horizontal reference line at the wall. Ford’s manual names masking tape as one way to mark a line; use the manual’s exact reference and target.
Mark only what the procedure asks you to mark. Ford’s 2026 Super Duty instructions describe measuring the headlamp center height and using a horizontal reference line, with masking tape as one possible marking aid. That does not mean every vehicle uses that same line, height or target. Tape is a simple optional setup aid; the important part is following the vehicle’s instructions precisely.

Check the low beams against the manual’s target
The cited Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota procedures use low beams for aiming. Follow your manual’s beam selection even if it differs. Compare the specified cutoff or high-intensity region with the manual’s target; do not substitute a guessed drop, a target from another vehicle, or the beam pattern of a different lamp type.
- Turn on the specified beam. Use low beam in the cited procedures and follow your vehicle’s instructions for any other setting or preparation.
- Isolate one side only as instructed. Some procedures call for checking one lamp while the other is covered or otherwise isolated. Do not cover a lamp unless your manual specifically directs it and gives a safe procedure. The Chevrolet manual warns that covering a lamp to improve the cutoff can cause overheating and damage; Toyota’s instructions also warn against leaving a covered lamp on beyond the stated limit because heat may damage the lens.
- Read the correct beam reference. Identify the cutoff or high-intensity area the manual tells you to use. Compare it with the marked line or target zone at the prescribed distance.
- Check both sides. Complete the manual’s check for each lamp. Do not assume the left and right sides use identical adjustments or that both axes are adjustable.
A visible wall pattern is only useful when the setup and reference match the vehicle instructions. If the beam edge is indistinct, the surface is not level, or you cannot identify the specified reference, stop rather than making an adjustment based on an approximate reading.
Do not try to make the cutoff easier to see by covering a lamp unless the procedure specifically tells you to isolate it and explains how. The Chevrolet manual warns that covering a lamp to improve the cutoff can cause overheating and damage. Toyota’s 2019 instructions also caution against leaving a covered lamp on beyond the stated limit because heat can damage the lens. If the manual’s isolation directions or time limit are unclear, leave the lamp uncovered and seek clarification.
Adjust only what the manual says you can adjust
If the manual authorizes a home adjustment, use only its specified adjuster, axis and tool. Turn direction and adjuster location vary, so do not infer them from a different vehicle’s diagram. Some cars permit vertical adjustment but not horizontal adjustment; on the 2026 Ford Super Duty, the manual says horizontal aim is neither required nor adjustable. That detail should not be generalized to other Ford models or other vehicles.
Make only the change described in the procedure, then recheck the beam against the same target and conditions. If an adjuster will not move as expected, the target cannot be reached, or the manual does not identify the adjuster clearly, stop. For the cited Chevrolet procedure, the manual recommends dealer service when adjustment is needed. A home wall check is not permission to force an adjuster or alter an axis the manufacturer does not provide.

Tool size and adjuster availability also vary. The 2026 Ford Super Duty manual names a screwdriver or hex key according to model or series, but that does not establish the tool for another vehicle. Do not try different tools on an uncertain adjuster, and do not turn a screw simply because it is accessible. If the manual does not call for a manual adjustment, treat the wall check as a visual check only and follow its service guidance.
After any permitted change, recheck the beam using the same wall distance, vehicle load, tire-pressure condition and reference points. If the target cannot be reached within the procedure, the adjuster seems damaged, or the result changes unexpectedly, stop rather than chasing the beam with additional turns. Reconfirm both lamps as the instructions direct.

Do not rely on a wall adjustment to compensate for a damaged or unstable lamp assembly. A loose mounting point, damaged headlamp, or result that cannot be brought to the manual’s target calls for inspection. Manufacturer guidance also identifies collision damage as a reason to check aim: the 2026 Ford Super Duty manual advises prompt checking after an accident, and the Chevrolet procedure recommends dealer service when adjustment is needed.
- After a collision: Have the aim and mounting checked, particularly if the lamp or surrounding bodywork may have shifted.
- If the lamp is loose or damaged: Arrange an inspection rather than trying to correct the beam with an adjuster.
- If the result remains outside the target: Stop and use the service option recommended by the manual.
- If instructions do not match your vehicle: Confirm the year, model, trim, market and lamp assembly before proceeding. Do not borrow another vehicle’s distance, target or tool specification.
Service is also the sensible next step when the manual calls for dealer adjustment, the vehicle uses automatic leveling or another special aiming system, or you cannot confidently identify the target. The cited procedures do not establish a standard price for an inspection or adjustment, so ask a dealer or qualified service facility for an estimate rather than assuming a particular cost.

- Using 25 ft automatically: That distance appears in several cited procedures, but not as a universal specification. Toyota’s cited procedure also provides a distinct target for exactly 3 m.
- Mixing a distance and target from different procedures: Use the target paired with your vehicle’s required distance.
- Skipping load, tire-pressure or suspension preparation: Complete each condition required by your manual before you judge the beam.
- Adjusting by eye without a defined reference: Use the cutoff or target specified by the vehicle procedure, not a generic diagram.
- Turning every available screw: Adjust only the specified axis. An adjuster may not be intended for routine aiming, and some vehicles do not offer horizontal adjustment.
- Leaving a covered lamp on: A covered lamp can overheat. Follow the manual’s exact isolation method and time limit; if unclear, do not cover it.
- Assuming a wall check is always an adjustment: Some manuals direct owners to service, and some vehicles have no permitted home adjustment. Follow that limit.
A quick go/no-go checklist
Before you begin, confirm that you have the exact manual and that it provides a suitable visual procedure for your vehicle. Check that the surface is level, the wall is appropriate, and the distance and target come from the same instructions. Set the prescribed tire pressure and load, settle the suspension if required, and use only the beam, reference points, isolation method and tool the procedure specifies. If any of those details are missing or unclear, do not fill the gap with a generic aiming chart.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I aim my headlights at home?
Only if the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle provides a suitable visual aiming procedure and permits the adjustment. If it directs you to a dealer, or the vehicle has automatic leveling or a special aiming system, follow that instruction.
How far should my car be from the wall?
Use the distance in your vehicle’s manual. A 25 ft (7.6 m) setup appears in the cited Ford and Chevrolet procedures, but it is not universal. Toyota’s 2019 recall instructions pair 25 ft with a 101.6 mm (4 in.) target tolerance and exactly 3 m with a different 39.9 mm (1.57 in.) tolerance.
Should I use low beams to check headlight aim?
The cited Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota procedures use low beams, but follow the beam selection in your own manual. Use its specified cutoff or high-intensity reference rather than a generic beam-drop rule.
Can I cover one headlight while checking the other?
Only if your manual specifically instructs you to isolate a lamp and explains a safe method and time limit. Chevrolet and Toyota guidance warns that a covered lamp can overheat and damage the lamp or lens if handled improperly.
What if I cannot bring the beam to the target?
Stop rather than forcing an adjuster or changing an unspecified axis. Check that the setup matches the manual; if the target still cannot be reached, or the lamp is loose or damaged, arrange an inspection. The cited Chevrolet manual recommends dealer service when adjustment is needed.
The Bottom Line
Use a home wall check only when the manual for your exact vehicle provides the procedure. Keep its distance, target, vehicle preparation and permitted adjustment together; do not borrow a generic target or force an unclear adjuster. If the lamp is damaged, the result will not meet the specified target, or the manual calls for service, have it inspected.
