Headlights should be aimed to illuminate the road without pointing too high, and driver-assistance sensors need clear, undamaged covers to work as intended. But there is no universal driveway adjustment: setup, reference distance, beam targets and even whether owners may adjust the lamps vary by vehicle. Start with the owner’s manual for your exact model year and market; clean sensor covers only as the manual allows, and use a technician when the procedure requires one or the vehicle has been damaged or repaired.
Why aim and sensor condition matter
A headlamp’s direction affects where its light falls. A beam aimed too low may not illuminate as far ahead as intended; one aimed too high may direct light into other drivers’ eyes. That is the practical reason to check aim when the beam looks wrong, not a promise that an adjustment will produce a particular safety improvement. The sources cited here provide procedures and cautions, not a measured estimate of crash reduction or improved night-driving safety.

Modern vehicles may also use a forward camera, radar, or both for driver-assistance functions. Dirt, snow or debris on a sensor or its cover can interfere with sensing. Cleaning can remove a blockage, but it cannot confirm that a sensor is aligned, undamaged or operating correctly. Headlamp aiming and sensor care are related maintenance concerns, but they are different jobs: a clean sensor does not correct a mis-aimed lamp, and aiming a lamp does not calibrate a camera or radar.
Why you should not use one universal wall-and-screwdriver method
Headlamp aiming depends on the vehicle’s prescribed setup and adjustment system. Tire pressure, vehicle load, the level of the parking surface, beam type, reference distance and any leveling feature can affect a check. Some manuals provide an owner procedure; others direct the owner to a dealer or technician. A wall distance or target from another car’s instructions is not a substitute for your own manual.

| Published procedure | What it specifies | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Hyundai, 2025 UK-market owner-manual page | Specified tire pressure; remove loads except the items stated in that procedure; park on a flat floor; use horizontal and vertical reference lines. It checks low-beam horizontal aiming before vertical aiming and, if fitted, sets the headlight-leveling switch to “0.” | These setup instructions apply to that model-specific manual page and market version, not all Hyundai vehicles or all cars. |
| Ford, 2024 Mustang Mach-E Owner’s Manual | Factory-aimed headlamps; dealer inspection after an accident. Its vertical check uses a level surface, a wall or screen about 7.6 m (25 ft) away, lamp-center height and a horizontal reference line. The manual specifies a Phillips #2 screwdriver for that vehicle’s vertical adjuster. | The distance, tool and check are an example for this model’s procedure, not general instructions for adjusting another vehicle. |
| Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., 2019 Supra service-campaign technical instructions hosted by NHTSA | Uses a 7.62 m (25 ft) wall distance, or exactly 3 m (9.84 ft) when needed, with the target zone changed to match the distance. Its low-beam cutoff and high-beam intensity tolerances are ±101.6 mm (4 in) at 7.62 m, or ±39.9 mm (1.57 in) at 3 m. | These tolerances belong to that campaign procedure. They are not universal aiming targets or measures of safety benefit. |
| Volvo, EX60 2027 support page, updated 2026-06-01 | Advanced headlight adjustment is for service technicians, is distinct from automatic leveling and requires the vehicle to be stationary on a flat, level surface. | A built-in adjustment feature does not necessarily mean the owner should operate it. |
The variation is why copying a familiar wall distance, measuring a cutoff from a different model, or turning an adjuster until a beam “looks right” can make aim less reliable. If your manual’s procedure is unclear, the beam pattern is visibly wrong, or the manual limits adjustment to a technician, arrange an inspection rather than improvising.
How to decide whether to check aim yourself or book service
Use the owner procedure only when it clearly permits it
Find the owner’s manual for the exact model year and market, then search its index or digital version for “headlight aiming,” “adjusting the headlamps” or similar wording. Confirm that it describes an owner-level check or adjustment, not a technician-only service feature. Follow all its setup requirements, including load, tire pressure, leveling-switch position, surface and reference measurements. If a requirement cannot be met, postpone the check or have a shop perform it.

Choose professional inspection when there is damage or uncertainty
- After a collision: Ford’s 2024 Mustang Mach-E manual directs owners to have the headlamps inspected by a dealer after an accident. Damage can affect mounting or aim even if a bulb still lights.
- When the adjustment system is restricted: Volvo’s EX60 guidance describes advanced adjustment as a technician procedure. Do not treat it as a normal owner control or confuse it with automatic leveling.
- When an adjustment does not behave as described: Stop rather than repeatedly turning screws or adjusters. A stuck, inaccessible or confusing adjuster is a reason to use the vehicle’s service channel.
- After camera, windshield or radar work: Have the relevant system checked as directed by the manufacturer; cleaning alone cannot establish that it is functioning properly.
For shop-based advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) calibration, preparation, equipment and procedures differ by automaker. AAA’s overview of ADAS sensor calibration describes level surfaces, targets and calibration equipment in shop procedures and emphasizes following automaker instructions. It is context for why calibration is a specialized service, not a do-it-yourself calibration recipe.

If your manual allows a headlamp check, prepare exactly as specified
Do not begin by choosing a wall distance from an online guide. First, identify the manual’s prescribed reference setup and confirm that you have the tools, surface and space it calls for. The following is a decision sequence, not a replacement aiming specification:

- Verify the vehicle and procedure. Match the manual to the exact model year and market. Check whether it covers a visual check, owner adjustment, or only service-technician work.
- Set up the vehicle as directed. The manual may specify tire pressure, which loads to remove or retain, a level surface, and a particular position for a headlight-leveling control. Do not assume the vehicle should be empty, loaded, or set to “0” unless its instructions say so.
- Use only the specified reference distance and marks. The reference may use lamp-center height, a horizontal line, vertical lines, a low-beam cutoff or another target. Match the manual’s beam type and measurements; do not transfer another model’s dimensions.
- Check which lamps and adjusters the procedure addresses. A method may cover vertical aim only, or specify an order for horizontal and vertical checks. Do not assume one adjuster controls both axes or that every lamp has an owner-accessible adjustment.
- Make only the allowed adjustment and recheck as instructed. Use the tool and sequence specified for your vehicle. If the beam cannot be brought into the stated target, the adjuster reaches its limit, or the procedure diverges from what you observe, stop and seek service.
For example, the Hyundai manual page cited above describes load and tire-pressure setup plus horizontal and vertical reference lines. The Ford Mach-E manual’s example is a vertical check at about 7.6 m (25 ft), using a Phillips #2 screwdriver for that model’s vertical adjuster. These examples show what a vehicle-specific instruction can look like; neither supplies a generic adjustment recipe.
What the Toyota procedure’s numbers do—and do not—mean
The 2019 Toyota Supra service-campaign document illustrates how precisely the measurement can depend on a particular procedure. It allows a 7.62 m (25 ft) reference distance or, when needed, exactly 3 m (9.84 ft), with the target zone adjusted to the selected distance. Its low-beam cutoff and high-beam intensity tolerances are ±101.6 mm (4 in) at 7.62 m and ±39.9 mm (1.57 in) at 3 m. Those are campaign-specific technical tolerances, not suitable targets to apply to another vehicle.

The same Toyota procedure says not to cover the opposite headlamp for more than 3 minutes during its check because heat can damage the synthetic-resin lens. That caution is also procedure-specific. It is a reason to follow the exact document rather than extending its method to a different lamp design.

How to clean camera and radar sensor covers carefully
Locate the relevant sensors in your own owner’s manual before cleaning. A vehicle may have a forward camera near the windshield and radar behind a front cover, but locations and cleaning limits are model-dependent. Do not probe a grille, remove a cover, or aim a spray based on another car’s layout.

Kia’s 2022 owner manual says dirt, snow or foreign substances on a sensor or cover can adversely affect sensing. It instructs owners to keep the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist sensor or cover clean and free of dirt, snow and debris. For the vehicles covered by that manual, Kia advises using a soft cloth to wash the vehicle, avoiding direct pressurized water on the radar sensor or cover, and avoiding unnecessary force that could move the sensor.
- Check the manual and identify the cover. Confirm whether the area is a camera, radar cover or another component, and follow the vehicle’s restrictions on liquids, sprays, cloths and washing methods.
- Remove visible dirt gently. Where the manufacturer permits, use a soft cloth and light pressure. Do not scrape, pry, press hard or attach accessories close to the radar.
- Keep prohibited pressure and products away. Kia specifically warns against spraying pressurized water directly at its radar sensor or cover. For any other vehicle, consult its manual before using a pressure washer, cleaner, polish, coating or restoration product; the cited guidance does not establish a generally suitable product.
- Check the area and dashboard afterward. Look for remaining snow, debris or damage without treating a clean-looking cover as proof that the system is working. Follow any message or warning shown by the vehicle.
Windshield changes matter too: Kia warns that windshield modifications can interfere with its camera. It recommends checking the function after windshield replacement or after damage or replacement of the radar sensor or its cover. Use your own automaker’s instructions for other vehicles and repairs.
What to do if a warning appears—or does not
A blocked radar cover may temporarily prevent Kia’s Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist from operating, and the manual says a warning may appear. But the same manual cautions that the system may not operate properly in some circumstances even when no warning is displayed. Do not use the dashboard as the only test of sensor health.
- If a warning identifies a blocked sensor: When safe, inspect the specified cover and clear visible dirt, snow or debris using the manual’s cleaning limits. If the message persists, follow the manual’s next step or contact service.
- If a warning remains after cleaning: Do not assume another wipe, a reset or a longer drive will solve it. The system may need inspection, especially if a sensor or cover is damaged or has been replaced.
- If the warning is absent but assistance seems unreliable: A missing warning does not establish proper operation. Avoid relying on the feature as a substitute for attentive driving and arrange a system check if the concern continues.
- If a windshield or radar component was replaced or damaged: Request the manufacturer-directed system check. A clean surface cannot correct displacement or complete calibration.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying a 25-foot method to every car: Ford’s Mach-E example and Toyota’s Supra campaign both use a distance near 25 ft, but their targets and procedures are model-specific. Another vehicle may prescribe something different or prohibit owner adjustment.
- Adjusting on an uneven surface or with the wrong load: A setup that conflicts with the manual can invalidate the reference check. Correct the setup before making any permitted adjustment.
- Confusing automatic leveling with manual aiming: A vehicle’s automatic leveling function does not necessarily replace its service procedure or give the owner permission to use an advanced adjustment feature.
- Turning adjusters by trial and error: Without the specified target and sequence, you may worsen aim or reach an adjustment limit without diagnosing the cause.
- Pressure-washing or pushing on a sensor cover: Direct pressure can violate manufacturer instructions, and force may move a sensor. Use the cleaning method allowed for that vehicle.
- Treating a clean cover or a warning-free dashboard as a calibration result: Neither confirms that a camera or radar is aligned and operating correctly.
A practical decision checklist
- The beam looks wrong, but there is no recent damage: Consult the exact owner’s manual. If it clearly permits an owner check, use its surface, tire-pressure, load, reference and adjustment instructions. If not, book an inspection.
- The vehicle has been in a collision: Arrange a professional headlamp inspection; Ford specifically calls for dealer inspection after an accident for the cited Mach-E.
- A sensor cover is dirty: Identify the correct cover and clean it only with the method your manual allows. Do not assume cleaning resolves a warning or performance concern.
- The windshield, radar, sensor or cover was replaced or damaged: Ask for the required system check or calibration under the automaker’s procedure.
- The instructions or result are unclear: Stop before further adjustment and consult the vehicle’s service channel. The right target and method must come from the vehicle-specific procedure.
Correct aim and clear sensor covers are sensible maintenance goals, but the specifications are vehicle-specific and the cited procedures do not quantify a safety improvement. Use the owner’s manual for routine checks, gentle manufacturer-approved cleaning for sensor covers, and qualified service when adjustment, damage or calibration calls for it.
