The exact button names, screen location, zone controls and automatic behavior depend on your car’s make, model, year, trim and software.
Start with the vehicle-specific owner’s manual if the controls described here are missing or behave differently. The general procedure below covers the common layouts without assuming that every car has the same features.

Before you adjust the touchscreen
Climate settings are usually easy to change, but searching through menus while moving can distract you. Set complex combinations before pulling away, or pull over when you need to locate an unfamiliar control. If the windshield is fogged, use the defrost control immediately and do not continue until you have clear visibility.
Do not assume that a button shown in another vehicle exists in yours. Automatic climate control, separate passenger zones, SYNC functions, rear defrost, heated seats and other options depend on equipment. Ford’s owner information for touchscreen systems notes that climate information can vary by option package and vehicle, while Chevrolet directs owners to the manual for vehicle-specific details.

Where the climate controls appear
Touchscreen climate controls generally use one of three entry points. Look for the displayed temperature, a climate icon, or a bar along the edge of the screen. Tapping it may open a compact popup or a full climate page.
| Interface pattern | What you will see | What happens when you tap it | Documented example or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Persistent climate bar | Temperature or a climate icon remains visible on the main screen. | A tap opens the detailed climate controls or a popup. | The Tesla Model 3 manual says to touch the displayed temperature at the bottom of the screen to open the main climate controls. |
| Infotainment climate menu | Climate is listed as a menu or tile in the infotainment system. | The screen changes to a dedicated climate page. | The 2025 Volkswagen Taos quick-start guide describes a climate menu in the infotainment system. |
| Popup or expanded panel | A small climate panel appears over the current audio, navigation or vehicle page. | Controls can be changed without leaving the current main screen. | Some vehicles use this arrangement; the label and opening gesture are vehicle-specific. |
If none of these is obvious, consult the index of the owner’s manual under climate control, automatic climate control, air conditioning, defrost or recirculation. A software update can also change infotainment labels or where a function is placed; Kia’s owner information warns that infotainment functions may change after updates.
Step-by-step: adjust temperature, airflow and defrost
1. Open the climate screen
- Look at the main touchscreen for a temperature reading, climate bar or climate icon.
- Tap that control. On some systems, the driver and passenger temperatures are shown separately; on others, only one temperature appears until the climate page opens.
- If tapping the visible temperature does nothing, open the infotainment menu and select the climate or climate-control option shown for your vehicle.
The first screen may show only the most-used controls. A second tap, an expanded arrow or a full-page option may reveal fan, airflow and air-intake settings. Because the control layout is not standardized, use the labels in your manual if the opening control is not apparent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Set the target temperature
- Tap the driver temperature arrows, plus/minus buttons or slider and move to the desired setting.
- If the car has dual-zone or split-temperature control, select the passenger temperature separately.
- If you want both sides to match, use SYNC when available. In systems with SYNC, the passenger setting follows the driver’s selected temperature until the zones are separated again.
A temperature number is a target, not a guarantee that the vents will immediately feel that temperature. Cabin temperature, sunlight, outside conditions and the system’s selected operating mode affect how quickly the target is reached.
3. Choose AUTO for ordinary heating or cooling
When AUTO is available, select it after choosing a comfortable target temperature. The automatic system normally varies fan speed and air distribution to maintain that target, so you do not have to keep changing those settings.

Automatic behavior is not identical in every vehicle. The 2025 Volkswagen Taos guide states that changing fan speed or air distribution manually deactivates AUTO. Another vehicle may leave some automatic functions active after a manual adjustment. If AUTO disappears or its indicator changes after you touch another control, that is usually the system acknowledging the manual override rather than a fault.
4. Change fan speed
- Open the fan control on the climate screen.
- Use the slider, plus/minus buttons or fan-speed steps provided by your vehicle.
- Move toward a higher setting for stronger airflow or a lower setting for quieter, gentler airflow.
Fan speed controls the strength of the air movement. It does not by itself choose whether air exits the dashboard vents, footwell vents or windshield outlets. That is the job of the air-distribution control.
5. Choose where the air goes
Tap the airflow or air-distribution icon. Common choices send air toward the face, the feet, the windshield, or a combination. The exact symbols differ, so read the on-screen label or the symbol key in the manual.
- Face or upper-body vents: directs air toward the dashboard outlets.
- Footwell: directs air toward the lower vents.
- Windshield or defog position: sends air toward the front glass.
- Combination: uses two or more outlet areas at the same time.
Changing this setting manually can override part of AUTO. The 2025 Taos guide documents separate touchscreen controls for fan speed and air distribution; other vehicles may combine them on one panel.
6. Clear a fogged windshield with front defrost
- Tap the front-defrost or maximum-defrost button as soon as the windshield begins to fog.
- Leave the setting active until the glass is clear. Depending on the vehicle, maximum defrost may increase fan speed, direct air to the windshield, switch on air conditioning for dehumidification, or turn off recirculation.
- Check the entire windshield and side glass before driving on.
The exact response varies by vehicle. Some systems provide separate front-defrost and maximum-defrost controls; others use one button with an automatic sequence. The 2025 Taos guide and Chevrolet climate guidance both identify the windshield-defrost function as the control to use when visibility is impaired.

7. Use rear defrost when equipped
For condensation or frost on the rear window, select the rear-defrost control if your vehicle has one. It is separate from front defrost on many systems. The icon and shutoff behavior vary, so follow the vehicle’s manual rather than assuming the front-defrost button will clear the rear glass.
8. Set recirculation deliberately
The recirculation control reuses cabin air instead of drawing in outside air. It can help cool the cabin more quickly and reduce outside odors, but it is not a setting to leave on indefinitely in every condition.
- Use recirculation temporarily when you need faster cooling or want to limit outside odors.
- Turn it off and select outside or fresh air if the windows begin to fog.
- Use front defrost when glass is already fogged, and confirm that the air intake has changed as expected.
Kia’s 2025 U.S. owner’s manual gives this safety warning: “Continued use of the climate control system in the recirculated air position can cause drowsiness or sleepiness, and loss of vehicle control. Set the air intake control to the outside (fresh) air position as much as possible while driving.” The same manual warns that continued recirculation can raise cabin humidity and fog the glass. Chevrolet likewise advises turning recirculation off if windows fog, especially in cold or damp conditions.
What each touchscreen control does
| Control | Primary effect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Sets the desired cabin temperature for the selected zone. | A dual-zone system may require separate driver and passenger settings. |
| AUTO | Lets the system manage functions such as fan speed and air distribution to maintain the target temperature. | Manual fan or airflow changes may cancel AUTO; the 2025 Taos is one documented example. |
| Fan speed | Changes the strength of airflow from the vents. | It does not determine which vents are open. |
| Air distribution | Chooses face, footwell, windshield or combined outlets. | Symbols and available combinations differ by vehicle. |
| Front defrost | Prioritizes the windshield to restore visibility. | Fan speed, air conditioning and recirculation behavior varies by vehicle. |
| Rear defrost | Activates the rear-window clearing function when equipped. | It is a separate feature from front defrost on many vehicles. |
| Recirculation | Reuses cabin air and can reduce outside odors or speed cooling. | Extended use can increase humidity, fog glass and contribute to drowsiness; use fresh air as much as possible while driving. |
| SYNC | Applies the driver’s temperature setting to the passenger zone when available. | Not every vehicle has SYNC or a separate passenger zone. |
How the controls differ between vehicles
Tesla Model 3
The Model 3 owner’s manual places the entry point at the displayed temperature along the bottom of the touchscreen. Touching that temperature opens the main climate controls. This is a model-specific instruction, not a universal rule for every touchscreen vehicle.
Volkswagen Taos, model year 2025
The 2025 Taos quick-start guide describes a climate menu within the infotainment system and documents touchscreen controls for fan speed and air distribution. Its instruction that manual fan or airflow changes deactivate AUTO illustrates why the indicator on your own screen matters.

Kia vehicles covered by the 2025 U.S. manual
The 2025 Kia manual provides the clearest safety qualification for recirculation: use outside air as much as possible while driving, and change the intake if humidity or fogging becomes a problem. The warning applies to the identified 2025 U.S. manual, not automatically to every Kia model or market.
Chevrolet support guidance
Chevrolet’s general climate-support information emphasizes checking the vehicle’s own manual for exact controls. It also warns that recirculation in cold or damp conditions may fog the windows and should be switched off if that occurs.
Ford touchscreen systems
Ford’s owner information for automatic climate control with a touchscreen display notes that instructions can vary with the vehicle and option package. A control shown in one Ford configuration may therefore be absent or labeled differently in another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common touchscreen climate problems
The climate controls are not visible
- Tap the displayed temperature, climate bar or climate icon on the main screen.
- Open the infotainment menu and look for Climate, Climate Control or Air Conditioning.
- Check the exact owner’s manual for your model year and trim; the entry point may be a popup rather than a permanent button.
AUTO turned off unexpectedly
Check whether you changed fan speed or air distribution. In the 2025 Taos, either manual change deactivates AUTO. Other systems may preserve some automatic functions, so use the indicator on your screen and the manual’s description rather than assuming a universal rule.
The windshield keeps fogging
- Turn recirculation off and select outside or fresh air.
- Press front or maximum defrost.
- Allow the system to use the fan and, where designed, air conditioning for dehumidification.
- Do not drive until the windshield and required side glass are clear.
The passenger temperature will not change independently
Look for a split-zone or passenger-zone control. If SYNC is active, the passenger setting may follow the driver’s setting. If no separate zone control appears, your vehicle may only provide single-zone climate control.

The controls changed after an infotainment update
Recheck the current owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s vehicle support page. Kia specifically notes that infotainment functions can change after software updates, and other manufacturers also organize controls by software and equipment configuration.
The selected temperature does not feel right
Confirm that the intended zone is selected, the airflow is directed to the desired outlets and AUTO has not been overridden by a manual fan or distribution setting. If the issue remains, use the vehicle’s troubleshooting section; touchscreen instructions alone cannot diagnose a heating or air-conditioning system fault.
How to find the authoritative instructions for your car
- Record the make, model, model year and trim. Equipment packages can change the touchscreen climate layout.
- Use the manufacturer’s official owner’s-manual site or the printed manual supplied with the vehicle.
- Search the index for climate control, automatic climate control, air distribution, defrost, air intake and recirculation.
- Match the illustrations and screen labels to your vehicle. Do not rely on a manual for a different year, market or infotainment system.
- Check for software-update notes if the screen no longer matches the printed instructions.
The owner’s manual for the exact vehicle remains the authority for feature availability, button location and the consequences of switching between AUTO and manual control.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A practical routine for everyday use
For normal driving, open the climate screen, choose a comfortable temperature, select AUTO, and leave the system to manage fan speed and distribution. Make a manual adjustment only when you have a specific reason, such as directing more air to your feet or reducing fan noise. Use front defrost whenever the windshield is impaired, and use recirculation briefly rather than continuously. If a control behaves differently from the sequence above, follow the instructions for your exact vehicle instead of forcing a generic touchscreen pattern.
