How to adjust the TVS Apache RTR 310’s ride modes and suspension settings

A step-by-step guide to the TVS Apache RTR 310’s electronic ride modes, variant-specific suspension adjusters, damping click counts, preload notches and safety checks.

By CarCody Team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TVS Apache RTR 310 has two separate adjustment systems. Ride modes are selected electronically through the TFT instrument cluster and alter engine, braking and ABS behavior. Suspension changes are mechanical: preload and damping adjusters alter how the springs and shock control the motorcycle. Changing one system does not change the other.

Before turning an adjuster, identify the motorcycle’s manufacture date, market and variant, then use the matching TVS owner manual. The procedures and click charts below are from TVS’s manual for motorcycles manufactured on or after August 2025. Earlier motorcycles and variants without every adjustable component can differ.

Check the motorcycle and manual before making a change

TVS publishes separate manuals by manufacture date. The official portal is the safest starting point: TVS Motor Vehicle User Manuals. For the procedures and charts in this guide, the relevant document is the TVS Apache RTR 310 User Manual for motorcycles made on or after August 2025.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Suspension hardware is not identical on every version. TVS describes the RTR 310 as having adjustable front and rear suspension, but the manual marks some adjusters as variant-dependent. Verify that the motorcycle actually has the adjuster shown in the manual before applying a procedure.

  • Front spring preload is changed equally in both fork legs.
  • Front compression damping is in the right-hand fork leg.
  • Front rebound damping is in the left-hand fork leg.
  • Rear spring preload uses a 10-notch adjuster.
  • Rear rebound damping is fitted only on versions equipped with that adjuster.

The rear shock is gas-filled. Do not open, disassemble or attempt to recharge it. If fork or shock oil is leaking, stop adjusting and contact an authorised TVS premium bike dealer.

Prepare a safe work area

  • Park on firm, level ground and support the motorcycle securely according to the owner manual.
  • Keep the ignition off while working on mechanical adjusters.
  • Use the ring spanner supplied in the motorcycle’s tool kit for rear preload.
  • Record the original notch and click positions before changing anything.
  • Never force an adjuster past its minimum or maximum position.

How to change the RTR 310’s ride mode

The manual names five electronic modes: Urban, Rain, Sport, Track and Supermoto. The motorcycle remembers the mode selected before the previous ignition-off, so it normally starts in that mode at the next key-on.

Quick selection from the home screen

  1. Switch on the ignition and wait for the instrument-cluster self-check to finish.
  2. From the home screen, press the UP control to toggle through the available ride modes.
  3. Stop on the required mode and allow the cluster to accept the selection.

Selection through the menu

  1. Keep the motorcycle stationary and switch on the ignition.
  2. After the cluster self-check, press ENT to enter the menu.
  3. Use UP or DOWN to highlight Ride Mode.
  4. Press ENT to open and accept the mode selection.
  5. Use Return to leave the menu.

Running-in lock and fault fallback

On the cited on-or-after-August-2025 manual, Sport, Track and Supermoto remain locked until the first 1,000 km running-in period is complete. TVS says an authorised premium bike dealer must enable them afterward. Do not treat the lock as a fault or try to bypass it through suspension adjustments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the motorcycle detects a relevant engine-management-system (EMS) or ABS fault, the manual says it operates only in Urban until the errors are cleared. A mode that refuses to change in that condition needs service diagnosis; repeatedly pressing the controls is not a repair.

What each ride mode changes

Ride modes alter electronic calibration, not spring preload or damping. The descriptions and speed limits below are those in the cited TVS manual and therefore apply only in its stated market and software/vehicle context.

Mode Engine and vehicle behavior ABS and braking description Manual speed limit or condition
Urban Linear acceleration and deceleration; easier crawling; good performance and stability. Good braking response and safety. 135 km/h in the manual’s market-specific specification.
Rain Engine performance is described as the same as Urban. Stronger lever pulsation, reduced braking response and performance, with excellent safety and stability in the manual’s description. No universal grip or stopping-distance guarantee is stated.
Sport Engine performance is described as the same as Track. ABS performance is described as the same as Urban. Locked during the first 1,000 km; dealer activation is required afterward.
Track Full engine/vehicle potential, maximum acceleration, optimised deceleration and engine braking; reduced rear-lift protection. Track-specific ABS behavior as described by the manual. 150 km/h in the manual’s market-specific specification; locked during the first 1,000 km.
Supermoto Engine performance is described as the same as Track. Rear brake ABS is switched off. Locked during the first 1,000 km; use only with a clear understanding of the loss of rear-wheel ABS intervention.

Supermoto’s rear-ABS shutdown is the critical safety distinction. TVS’s official RTR 310 product information also identifies rear ABS disengagement in this mode. It should not be presented as an ordinary road setting for riders who have not deliberately accepted that change in braking assistance.

Understand preload, compression and rebound

Mechanical suspension settings answer different questions. Spring preload establishes the spring’s starting position and helps keep the motorcycle at an appropriate ride height when the load changes. Damping controls how quickly the suspension moves: compression damping resists movement as the suspension compresses, while rebound damping controls its return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A ride mode cannot compensate for an incorrect preload setting, and increasing preload does not automatically make a spring stiffer. Select the electronic mode for the engine and braking behavior you want, then set the mechanical suspension for the rider, passenger, luggage and surface.

Adjusting the front suspension

Front spring preload

Where the motorcycle is equipped with the applicable adjusters, set both fork legs identically. Unequal settings can make the fork respond differently on each side. Turn each adjuster only within the range shown by the matching manual; TVS warns not to force it beyond the maximum or minimum position.

Because this equipment is variant-specific, do not assume that a visible cap or fitting is an adjustable preload mechanism. Confirm the component and its procedure in the correct manufacture-date manual first.

Front compression and rebound damping

The right fork leg controls compression damping and the left fork leg controls rebound damping. For either damping adjuster, TVS defines the reference position as fully closed by turning clockwise. Count clicks outward from that reference.

  • Clockwise increases damping.
  • Counterclockwise decreases damping.
  • Right fork leg: compression.
  • Left fork leg: rebound.

Make a note of the starting click count, change one setting at a time, and test in a controlled environment. If the adjuster will not turn smoothly or reaches the end of its range unexpectedly, stop rather than applying force.

Adjusting rear shock preload

The rear spring preload adjuster has 10 notches. TVS specifies the third notch as the standard setting for the cited manual. Higher notches are intended for heavier loads; lower notches are intended for lighter loads.

  1. Place the motorcycle on its stand on firm, flat ground.
  2. Work from the motorcycle’s left side only.
  3. Fit the supplied ring spanner fully into the preload adjuster notches.
  4. Move the adjuster one notch at a time toward the required load setting.
  5. Confirm that the spanner remains seated before applying force, then record the final notch.

TVS warns that moving the adjuster in one long stretch can damage it and that a slipping spanner can strike nearby parts. Do not substitute an unknown tool that does not fit the notches securely. The standard notch is a reference, not a promise that every rider will obtain the same ride height or comfort.

Adjusting rear rebound damping

Rear rebound damping is available only on variants fitted with that adjuster. Where present, use the same reference method as the fork: turn fully clockwise to the closed position, count clicks from there, turn clockwise to increase damping and counterclockwise to reduce it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Never open or dismantle the gas-filled shock. A leak, damaged adjuster or uncertainty about the component requires dealer inspection rather than an improvised repair.

TVS damping settings: the official starting chart

The following values are transcribed from the on-or-after-August-2025 owner manual. Every number is a click count from fully closed clockwise, as defined in the adjustment procedure. “RH” means right-hand fork leg and “LH” means left-hand fork leg.

TVS chart use Fork RH compression Fork LH rebound Shock rebound
Standard 10 clicks 10 clicks 10 clicks
Solo (Race Track) 20 clicks 4 clicks 8 clicks
Solo (Comfort) 15 clicks 15 clicks 14 clicks

Rider and luggage (Touring) 10 clicks 10 clicks 10 clicks
Rider, pillion and luggage (Touring, within limits) 10 clicks 10 clicks 10 clicks

TVS says the motorcycle is delivered at the standard damping setting and describes this chart as a guide because requirements vary with rider weight and personal preference. The chart is not a personalised suspension tune or an independent performance test.

Preload examples for common loads

The manual’s preload examples use the rear shock’s 10-notch scale. Keep these notch positions separate from the damping click counts in the previous table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Use case in the manual Rear preload example Luggage qualification

Choosing a practical setup

Everyday solo riding

Begin at the delivered standard settings. This gives you a known baseline for evaluating comfort, steering and traction before changing anything. If the ride feels harsh or the suspension does not settle comfortably over ordinary roads, alter only the relevant damping direction in a small, recorded step and evaluate the same route again.

Solo comfort

Use the manual’s Solo (Comfort) damping row as the initial reference when the motorcycle is carrying only the rider and comfort is the priority. Keep both fork-leg roles straight: compression is adjusted on the right and rebound on the left. Do not move one fork leg without matching the required left/right procedure in the manual.

Solo track use

The Solo (Race Track) row is the manual’s starting reference for a solo track-oriented setup. It does not unlock Track mode, change the motorcycle’s legal speed limits or make public roads a racetrack. Sport, Track and Supermoto still require the running-in distance and dealer activation described earlier.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rider and pillion

Increase rear spring preload to the manual’s rider-and-pillion example before carrying a passenger, then use the corresponding damping row as the baseline. Check that luggage and total load remain within the motorcycle’s limits.

Touring with luggage

Use the applicable touring preload example and keep luggage at or below the 10 kg limit stated in the cited chart. Secure the load so it cannot shift, then reassess handling at low speed before riding normally.

A disciplined test-and-record method

  1. Write down the current ride mode, rear preload notch and every fitted damping click count.
  2. Confirm tyre pressures and load are appropriate before interpreting suspension behavior; a changed load can mimic a damping problem.
  3. Change one mechanical variable at a time. Do not alter preload, compression and rebound together if you want to know which change produced the result.
  4. Use the same familiar road or controlled area, at moderate speed, and note harshness, wallowing, steering and how quickly the suspension returns after a bump.
  5. Return to the recorded standard setting if the change makes control or comfort worse.
  6. Stop riding and seek inspection if you notice oil, a damaged adjuster, unusual knocking or a sudden change that a click adjustment does not explain.

Common mistakes and fixes

Confusing ride mode with suspension mode

Ride mode selection changes electronic engine and braking behavior. It does not move a preload collar or alter damping clicks. Set each system independently.

Counting clicks from the wrong reference

The TVS chart counts from fully closed clockwise. If you count from the delivered setting or from a counterclockwise stop, the table values will not correspond to the manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjusting only one fork leg

The fork uses separate functions: compression on the right and rebound on the left. Front spring preload, where fitted, must be equal in both legs.

Forcing the rear preload spanner

A poorly seated ring spanner can slip or damage the adjuster. Work from the left side, use the supplied tool correctly and move one notch at a time.

Assuming every RTR 310 has every adjuster

Variant and manufacture-date differences matter. Confirm the hardware and manual before applying a click count or preload instruction.

Treating Supermoto as a normal road safety setting

Supermoto disables rear brake ABS. Select it only when you understand that the rear wheel no longer receives that ABS intervention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When dealer assistance is the correct choice

  • Sport, Track or Supermoto remain locked after the 1,000 km running-in period.
  • An EMS or ABS warning forces the motorcycle into Urban.
  • You cannot identify the correct manufacture-date manual or variant equipment.
  • Fork or shock oil is leaking.
  • The gas-filled shock, adjuster or preload mechanism is damaged.
  • An adjuster will not move within its stated range without force.

An authorised TVS premium bike dealer can confirm equipment, clear faults and perform work that should not be attempted on the gas-filled shock.
