For the cited Tesla Model 3 examples, driver-assistance controls are under Controls > Self-Driving. The options and labels can differ by model, trim, hardware, software, and region, so check the touchscreen owner manual in your vehicle before following a path exactly. These settings configure assistance and alerts; they do not make the car self-driving.

This guide explains the documented choices for cruise set speed, activation, the Green Traffic Light Chime, Forward Collision Warning, and selected Autosteer settings. The examples come from different Tesla manuals and markets, so treat them as model-specific illustrations—not a promise that every setting appears on every vehicle.

Find the settings in your Tesla

On the Model 3 examples in Tesla’s manuals, open Controls > Self-Driving to find settings for Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, the Green Traffic Light Chime, and Forward Collision Warning. Tesla’s general Active Safety Features and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control support page also describes this path for Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, while noting that operation can depend on vehicle equipment. Other vehicles may show different labels, menus, or controls.

Before changing anything, open the owner manual on the vehicle’s touchscreen and look up the feature by name. Tesla says availability can depend on vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, region, model, trim, and model year. The cited manuals cover different vehicles and markets; a setting described for one is not guaranteed to appear on another. In particular, the 2024-and-newer Model 3 North America manual cited for collision-warning settings identifies software version 2026.32, while the cruise and green-light examples are from a cited Model 3 manual and the lane-change examples are from a Model S manual.

Use the manual as the authority for both the path and the operating instructions for your own car. A setting’s absence does not by itself mean that a menu is broken: the feature may not be available for that model, configuration, software, or region. Do not substitute instructions for a different Tesla just because its menu looks similar.

Set Traffic-Aware Cruise Control speed and activation

In the cited Model 3 manual, the cruise-speed choices are Speed Limit and Current Speed. Speed Limit uses the detected speed limit as the reference for the set speed. Current Speed uses the vehicle’s current speed as the reference. If you choose Speed Limit, you can also set an offset from the detected limit as a fixed amount or a percentage.

  1. On the touchscreen, go to Controls > Self-Driving.
  2. Under Set Speed, choose Speed Limit or Current Speed.
  3. If you chose Speed Limit, open Set Speed Offset and select Fixed or Percentage, then set the offset offered by your vehicle.
  4. If your vehicle has Self-Driving Activation, choose Single Click or Double Click according to how you want activation to work.

The fixed-versus-percentage choice changes how the offset is expressed: one is a set amount and the other is a proportion of the detected limit. The cited material does not specify a universal offset value, so use the choices and values actually displayed for your vehicle rather than assuming a number from another model or software version. If you select Current Speed, the cited instructions do not describe a speed-limit offset for that mode.

The activation choice can determine whether Autosteer engages alongside cruise control. In the cited Model 3 manual, Tesla says Double Click is required to use Traffic-Aware Cruise Control independently of Autosteer. This matters if you want cruise control without Autosteer: check the setting and your vehicle’s manual rather than assuming the two features always engage separately. The manual describes the Single Click and Double Click choices for vehicles equipped with this setting; if it is absent, follow the instructions for your configuration.

Change the set speed while driving

The cited Model 3 manual describes activating Traffic-Aware Cruise Control by pressing and releasing the right scroll button, then releasing the accelerator. Use the right scroll wheel to adjust the set speed. Pressing the right scroll button again or pressing the brake pedal cancels the feature. These are operational steps from that manual, not universal instructions for every Tesla.

Tesla’s general support page says the control used to enable Traffic-Aware Cruise Control can depend on the vehicle: the right scroll button or a gear stalk may be used, depending on equipment. Check your own touchscreen manual before operating the feature, especially if your car’s controls do not match the Model 3 example. Do not try to adapt a button sequence from another model while driving.

Changing the set speed does not turn Traffic-Aware Cruise Control into collision protection. Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual says: “Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is designed for your driving comfort and convenience and is not a collision warning or avoidance system.” Continue to monitor traffic and remain ready to control the car, even when the feature is active.

Turn on or adjust the Green Traffic Light Chime

The cited Model 3 manual documents the Green Traffic Light Chime for the United States and Canada. If your vehicle and region offer it, look for it under Controls > Self-Driving. The chime can alert you when you are waiting at a red light and the light turns green. In the manual’s described situation, when you are waiting behind another car without using Traffic-Aware Cruise Control or Autosteer, it can also chime when the car ahead moves.

The manual describes an alert, not an instruction to proceed. A green light or a moving lead vehicle does not remove the need to check the intersection, traffic, and surrounding conditions before moving. The chime is a cue to look and decide, not a substitute for your judgment.

This feature has a regional and configuration context: the cited source documents it for the U.S. and Canada, not as a universal Tesla feature. If you do not see the Green Traffic Light Chime in your settings, consult your in-vehicle manual to confirm whether the feature is supported for your model and market. The cited information does not establish that it is available everywhere.

Adjust Forward Collision Warning sensitivity

In the cited 2024-and-newer Model 3 North America manual, which identifies software version 2026.32, Forward Collision Warning is on by default. The manual lists Early, Medium, Late, and Off as sensitivity choices, with Medium as the default. The warning provides visual and audible alerts to the driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the touchscreen, go to Controls > Self-Driving.
  2. Open the Forward Collision Warning or collision-avoidance control shown for your vehicle.
  3. Select the sensitivity option available on your screen: Early, Medium, Late, or Off.

These choices concern the timing or availability of Forward Collision Warning alerts; they are not settings for how hard the car brakes. The cited manual describes Medium as the default and also lists Early, Late, and Off. If your screen has different choices or labels, use the controls and explanation in your vehicle’s manual. Do not assume that a sensitivity option documented for a 2024+ Model 3 in North America appears identically on another Tesla.

Forward Collision Warning is not Automatic Emergency Braking

Forward Collision Warning uses visual and audible alerts to warn the driver; it does not itself apply the brakes. Automatic Emergency Braking is a separate feature. If enabled, it may apply braking in certain conditions when a collision is considered imminent. Changing Forward Collision Warning sensitivity is not the same as adjusting or disabling Automatic Emergency Braking.

That distinction is important if you are trying to reduce alerts or understand what a setting does. A change to warning sensitivity should not be treated as a change to emergency-braking behavior. The cited information does not say that turning Forward Collision Warning off disables Automatic Emergency Braking, nor does it say that changing the warning setting adjusts the braking feature. Check the separate control and its manual description if you need to understand Automatic Emergency Braking on your car.

Tesla says these active-safety features cannot respond in every situation. The cited manual also warns that dirty or obstructed cameras and adverse weather can impair their operation. Do not rely on a warning or automatic braking feature to prevent every collision. Keep attention on the road and drive at a speed and in a manner appropriate to conditions.

Autosteer and lane-change settings vary by vehicle

A Tesla Model S manual gives a different example: Autosteer appears at Controls > Self-Driving > Autosteer (Beta). Its Navigate on Autosteer options include automatic enablement at the start of a trip, optional speed-based lane changes, passing-lane behavior, confirmation before a lane change, and lane-change notifications. The notification choices in that manual are Off, Chime, Vibrate, and Both.

These controls answer different questions. Automatic enablement concerns whether Navigate on Autosteer is enabled at the beginning of a trip. Speed-based lane changes and passing-lane behavior are lane-change preferences; confirmation controls whether a confirmation is requested before a lane change. Notifications determine how the cited Model S manual says an alert can be presented: no notification, a chime, vibration, or both. The cited Model S manual does not establish that these exact choices, wording, or behavior are present on other models.

These are Model S manual examples, not universal Tesla settings. Tesla says availability depends on market, build date, configuration, options, and software. If your vehicle offers Autosteer, use its own touchscreen manual to identify the matching controls and their current names. Tesla describes Autosteer as hands-on assistance: keep your hands on the steering wheel and be prepared to take over. A lane-change notification or other Autosteer setting does not relieve you of the need to supervise the vehicle.

What to check if a setting is missing

  • Look up the feature in the in-vehicle manual. Manuals and touchscreen menus can vary with model, software, equipment, and region.
  • Check the feature name, not just its expected location. A control may be presented differently on another vehicle or software version.
  • Confirm whether the feature is equipped and available in your market. A setting listed in another model’s manual may not apply to yours. This is especially relevant for the U.S.- and Canada-documented Green Traffic Light Chime and the Model S Navigate on Autosteer examples.
  • Separate alerts from interventions. Forward Collision Warning gives visual and audible alerts; Automatic Emergency Braking is a separate feature that may brake in certain conditions if enabled.
  • Check for factors that can impair active safety features. The cited Model 3 manual warns that dirty or obstructed cameras and adverse weather can affect operation.
  • Keep supervision active. If a feature is unavailable, impaired, or does not respond as expected, drive without relying on it.

Driver assistance still requires your attention

Driver-assistance settings can change how a Tesla alerts you or controls speed and steering, but they do not transfer responsibility for driving. Tesla’s support page states: “It is your responsibility to stay alert, drive safely and be in control of your vehicle at all times.” Keep watching the road, follow traffic signals and conditions, and be ready to steer or brake yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In particular, do not interpret a cruise-speed setting, a green-light chime, a collision-warning sensitivity choice, or a lane-change notification as a guarantee that the car will recognize every hazard or respond in every circumstance. Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is not a collision warning or avoidance system, and Tesla says active-safety features cannot respond in every situation. Use the controls only as assistance while remaining the driver.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change Tesla cruise control speed settings?

In the cited Model 3 manual, go to Controls > Self-Driving and choose Speed Limit or Current Speed under Set Speed. If you choose Speed Limit, Set Speed Offset lets you select Fixed or Percentage and set an available offset. While the feature is active, the cited manual says to use the right scroll wheel to adjust set speed. Controls can differ by vehicle, so confirm the steps in your touchscreen manual.

Why do Autosteer and cruise control turn on together?

On vehicles with Self-Driving Activation, the cited Model 3 manual offers Single Click and Double Click. Tesla says Double Click is required to use Traffic-Aware Cruise Control independently of Autosteer in that manual. Check the setting and your vehicle’s manual, because equipment and activation behavior can differ.

How do I turn on the Green Traffic Light Chime?

The cited Model 3 manual lists it under Controls > Self-Driving and documents it for the U.S. and Canada. If your vehicle and region offer the feature, use the control shown in your own manual. It can alert when a red light turns green and, in the described situation, when a lead vehicle moves. Always check the road before proceeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I change Tesla Forward Collision Warning sensitivity?

The cited 2024+ Model 3 North America manual lists Early, Medium, Late, and Off, with Medium as the default, under Controls > Self-Driving. Forward Collision Warning provides visual and audible alerts. Automatic Emergency Braking is a separate feature, so do not assume that changing warning sensitivity changes braking behavior.

Does Forward Collision Warning apply the brakes?

No. In the cited manual, Forward Collision Warning provides visual and audible alerts; Automatic Emergency Braking is separate and may apply braking in certain conditions if enabled. Tesla warns that these features cannot prevent every collision.

What should I do if I cannot find a setting?

Search for the feature by name in your vehicle’s touchscreen owner manual. Availability and menu labels can depend on model, trim, hardware, software version, configuration, options, and region. Examples from another model’s manual may not apply to your Tesla.

The Bottom Line

Start with Controls > Self-Driving only if that path matches your vehicle’s touchscreen manual. The cited Model 3 examples let drivers adjust cruise set-speed behavior, activation, the Green Traffic Light Chime where documented, and Forward Collision Warning sensitivity; Model S Autosteer controls provide a separate, model-specific example. Warning settings are not braking settings, and none of these features replaces attentive driving.
