To change Rivian R2 privacy controls, first select the driver profile whose choices you want to edit, then open Settings > Data and Privacy in the vehicle, or use the equivalent privacy controls in the Rivian Mobile App. The exterior-camera and interior-camera switches govern whether certain data is shared with Rivian for safety-system improvement; they do not simply turn the cameras off. Rivian says driver-assistance processing continues in the vehicle when those sharing choices are disabled.
The exact R2 screen labels can vary by software version. Settings 2 adds context-aware controls and universal search, and software version 2026.31 is being rolled out to eligible vehicles. Use the labels shown on your R2 or search the current Owner’s Guide rather than relying on an older screenshot.

What each Rivian R2 privacy control actually changes
R2 privacy settings are separate controls, not one master camera switch. Before changing anything, identify whether you are controlling exterior-camera image sharing, interior-camera image sharing, precise-location sharing, or another connected-service permission.
| Control | What Rivian describes it as controlling | What happens when you turn sharing off | Important limits or exceptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exterior-camera image sharing | Sharing exterior images for product improvement of driver-assistance safety features, including Highway Assist and Automatic Emergency Braking, on vehicles built for model year 2025 and later. | The cameras continue processing images in the vehicle for driver-assistance functions. | Rivian says crash-related exterior images can still be associated with the vehicle identification number (VIN) for investigation and regulatory reporting. |
| Interior-camera image and derived-data sharing | Optional sharing to improve safety systems, machine-learning models and Driver Attention Detection. | On-vehicle Driver Attention Detection processing continues; Rivian says disabling sharing does not affect driver-assistance functionality. | Interior images are collected only while the vehicle is in Drive. Legal obligations, consent, a requested review or safety handling can create exceptions. |
| Precise-location sharing | Location-dependent services such as navigation, Autonomy features, the mobile app, Alexa, Rivian Assistant and analytics. | Some features may be limited or disabled. | Rivian says precise location remains available for critical safety functions such as eCall/SOS and incidents. General location, described as roughly a seven-mile radius, may still be shared. |
| Third-party vehicle apps and assistant audio | Separate permissions for connected applications and audio clips generated when using Rivian Assistant. | Only the selected service is affected; changing a camera switch does not automatically change these permissions. | Review each permission independently if your goal is to minimize all optional sharing. |
Rivian’s current Canada-English Data Privacy Notice is the primary source for these distinctions. Language and available controls can differ by market, so consult the notice that applies to your region before making a jurisdiction-specific assumption.

How driver profiles determine whose settings apply
Rivian states that an R2 has driver-profile management in which privacy choices can be set individually, either in the vehicle or in the Rivian Mobile App. That means a setting changed by one signed-in driver does not automatically represent every person who uses the vehicle.
Select the intended profile first
- Wake the R2 and check the driver-profile name or avatar shown on the center display.
- Switch to the profile for the person whose privacy choices you want to edit.
- Only after confirming the profile should you open the privacy controls and change a toggle.
If a person unlocks the R2 with a digital key without signing in to a personal profile, Rivian says the vehicle uses an unlinked generic profile associated with that key. Default privacy settings apply when that profile is first activated. A driver who expected personal choices to load may therefore be looking at the generic profile instead. Sign in to the intended profile, or verify the key-to-profile relationship, before judging whether a setting was saved.
Change camera-sharing settings in the R2
Use the vehicle display
- Park safely and bring the center display out of its driving view.
- Confirm that the intended driver profile is active.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Data and Privacy. Rivian’s R1 owner documentation identifies this general path; the R2 layout and wording may differ by software release.
- Review the camera-related choices. Exterior-camera sharing and interior-camera sharing are separate controls, so change only the one you intend to change.
- Read the explanatory text beside the toggle, then switch sharing on or off and wait for the vehicle to confirm or retain the new state.
- Leave the settings page and reopen it to verify that the selected profile shows the intended state.
On vehicles running Settings 2, context-aware controls and universal search may make the page easier to find. If Data and Privacy is not visible where an older guide places it, use the vehicle’s search function for “privacy,” “camera,” or “location,” then follow the current on-screen result. Do not infer a hidden R2 menu path from an R1 screenshot.
Use the Rivian Mobile App
- Open the Rivian Mobile App and sign in to the account connected to the driver profile you intend to manage.
- Open the vehicle or account settings area and select the privacy controls. Rivian confirms that R2 privacy choices are available in the app, but the exact labels and navigation can change with app releases.
- Choose the camera or location permission you want to review.
- Change the relevant sharing choice, save if the app presents a save control, and reopen the page to confirm the state.
- When you next drive, check the active in-vehicle profile. An app change made under one account will not necessarily alter a generic digital-key profile.
If the app and vehicle display disagree, treat the active vehicle profile and the latest displayed status as the deciding evidence. Sign out and back in only after confirming that you are using the correct Rivian account; repeatedly changing the toggle under different profiles can make the result appear inconsistent.

Exterior camera sharing: what turning it off does and does not do
For vehicles built for model year 2025 and later, Rivian describes an exterior-image sharing choice used for product improvement of driver-assistance safety features such as Highway Assist and Automatic Emergency Braking. This is a permission to send selected imagery for improvement, not a command to deactivate every exterior camera.
Driver assistance keeps using the cameras
When exterior-image sharing is disabled, Rivian says the cameras continue processing images inside the vehicle for driver-assistance functions. Turning off the sharing choice therefore should not be expected to disable Highway Assist, Automatic Emergency Braking or other camera-dependent assistance. If an assistance feature stops working, investigate normal operating conditions, sensor cleanliness, weather, software state and feature availability rather than assuming the privacy toggle caused it.
When images are excluded from product-improvement use
Rivian’s notice says it does not use the first and last three minutes of a drive for this product-improvement purpose, based on location flags set by the driver. The same notice says precise location is associated with exterior images used for driver-assistance improvement when the driver has agreed to location sharing for driver assistance. These statements describe handling for a particular improvement program; they are not a promise that no camera image can ever leave the vehicle.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Crash handling is a separate exception
Rivian’s owner documentation says exterior images are associated with the VIN in a crash for crash investigation and regulatory reporting regardless of the product-improvement sharing choice. Consequently, opting out of improvement sharing does not guarantee that every exterior image remains solely on the vehicle after a crash. Explain the distinction this way: the toggle limits a defined improvement use, while safety, investigation and regulatory obligations can still apply.

Interior camera and Driver Attention Detection
The interior camera has two distinct roles. Driver Attention Detection can process camera information on the vehicle, while a separate permission governs optional sharing of interior images and derived data with Rivian to improve safety systems.
On-vehicle attention processing
Rivian says images used for Driver Attention Detection are processed on the vehicle and that images or video are not stored or shared for that specific attention-detection purpose. This explains why turning off the sharing toggle does not mean the attention function is removed: the local processing path is different from the optional data-sharing path.
Optional sharing for system improvement
If the driver enables interior-camera sharing, Rivian says images and derived data can be shared to improve safety systems, including machine-learning models and Driver Attention Detection. The sharing toggle is on the vehicle’s Data and Privacy page. Turning it off limits that optional sharing but, according to Rivian, does not affect driver-assistance functionality.
When the interior camera collects information
Rivian’s notice says interior images are collected only while the vehicle is in Drive, not while it is in Park. For product-improvement or development, the notice says the information is analyzed or used on a de-identified or pseudonymized basis and is not associated with the driver or vehicle. That description does not override separate crash, safety, support or legal handling.

Exceptions can apply when a driver requests a review, gives consent, or Rivian must comply with a legal obligation. Avoid describing the toggle as a physical camera shutdown. The accurate description is that it controls optional sharing of interior imagery and derived data, while local Driver Attention Detection remains a separate vehicle function.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Precise location and camera privacy
Precise location is controlled in the same general Data and Privacy area, but it is not a camera setting. Rivian says precise location can support navigation, Autonomy features, the mobile app, Alexa, Rivian Assistant and analytics. Disabling it can therefore reduce or disable useful functions beyond anything involving cameras.
What may continue after precise location is disabled
- Rivian says precise location is still shared for critical safety purposes, including eCall/SOS and incidents.
- General or coarse location may still be shared; Rivian describes this as approximately a seven-mile radius.
- For exterior images used to improve driver assistance, precise location is associated with the images if the driver agreed to location sharing for driver assistance.
Change precise-location sharing only after deciding which services you are willing to lose. If navigation, Autonomy, app features or assistant functions become less capable afterward, that can be the expected consequence of the privacy choice rather than a vehicle fault.
A practical privacy-adjustment checklist
- Identify the exact data type: exterior images, interior images, precise location, third-party apps or assistant audio.
- Confirm the active R2 driver profile before changing anything.
- Use Settings > Data and Privacy in the vehicle, or the privacy controls in the Rivian Mobile App.
- Read the description beside each toggle; do not treat “sharing” as “camera off.”
- After changing a setting, leave and reopen the page to verify it under the same profile.
- Test only the functions affected by the choice, such as navigation after a location change. Do not test driver assistance in unsafe conditions.
- Remember that crash investigation, critical safety, legal obligations and a driver-requested review can create exceptions.
- Review separate third-party-app and assistant-audio permissions if you want broader data minimization.
Troubleshooting when a setting seems missing or ineffective
The Data and Privacy page is not where an older guide shows it
Software revisions can reorganize Settings. Settings 2 introduces context-aware controls and universal search, and software 2026.31 is being rolled out to eligible vehicles. Search the current vehicle interface for “privacy,” “camera” or “location,” and consult the current R2 Owner’s Guide. An R1 path is useful corroboration for the general location of the control, not proof of an identical R2 screen.

The interior-camera sharing option is absent
Do not assume that absence means the camera is secretly sharing or that the camera is broken. Rivian notes that some vehicles built before model year 2025 had an interior camera disabled by an over-the-air update and consequently did not show an interior-camera sharing option. That older-vehicle behavior should not be applied automatically to an R2. Verify the R2 software and vehicle documentation for the actual reason.
The vehicle still uses a camera after sharing is off
That is consistent with Rivian’s description. Both exterior-camera driver-assistance processing and on-vehicle Driver Attention Detection can continue when optional sharing is disabled. Look for the sharing state, not for a claim that the physical camera has stopped operating.
Different drivers report different privacy states
Check each person’s profile and whether a digital key is opening an unlinked generic profile. R2 choices are profile-specific, so two drivers can legitimately see different settings. Change the choice while the intended profile is active, then verify it again in that profile.

Rivian warns that turning off precise location may limit or disable navigation, Autonomy, mobile-app, Alexa, Rivian Assistant or analytics functions. Restore the setting only if you need the affected feature and accept the associated location sharing. Safety-related sharing can continue regardless.
What these settings cannot promise
No single toggle guarantees that all vehicle data collection stops. Camera processing needed for assistance can remain on the vehicle; crash images can be handled for investigation and reporting; critical safety events can involve location; and legal obligations or a driver-requested review can create additional handling. The useful privacy decision is therefore specific: choose which optional improvement or service sharing you want to permit, while understanding the documented safety and operational exceptions.
