Some vehicles have a driver-operated leveling switch, some level their beams automatically, and others require a vehicle-specific aiming procedure. First check your owner’s manual for your exact make, model, year, and market. Headlight aim changes where the beam falls; it does not make the bulbs brighter. If you mean a dim instrument panel, look for a separate display or illumination control.
First, identify what you want to adjust
“Headlight height” can mean two different things: a driver-operated leveling control that makes a limited vertical change, often to account for vehicle load, or the underlying headlamp aim that determines where the beam points. The controls and procedures are not interchangeable. A leveling switch is not necessarily a substitute for checking or correcting aim.

“Brightness” is also ambiguous. The documents cited here describe beam leveling, aiming and light patterns; they do not establish a universal setting for increasing headlamp output. Raising or lowering the beam changes where light lands, not how much light the lamp produces. If the instrument cluster or dashboard display is too dim, look for its separate illumination or display-brightness control in the owner’s manual.
Keep these three questions separate as you look through the manual: Does the car let the driver compensate for load? Does it automatically level the beam? Or does the manufacturer describe a service procedure for correcting aim? The answer determines whether you are looking for a routine control or a specialized adjustment. A setting labeled “headlights” or “adjust” in a display is not enough, by itself, to identify its purpose.

Find out which adjustment your vehicle has
Do not assume a control exists, or that a setting shown in a touchscreen is meant for ordinary driver use. The relevant instructions depend on the vehicle’s make, model, year and market. Use the manual for that specific vehicle rather than a menu path or procedure found for a different car.
Driver-operated leveling switch
Some vehicles provide a switch or dial, often with numbered positions, for limited vertical leveling. A NHTSA-hosted manufacturer instruction shows an example of a dashboard headlamp-aiming switch and directs the technician to use position “0” for that particular check. That example establishes that this type of control exists on some vehicles; it does not mean every car has one or that every car should be set to 0.
Check the owner’s manual to learn what the numbered positions mean for your vehicle and when to use them. A leveling device may compensate for changes in load or ground clearance, but that is not the same as carrying out a formal aiming check.
The distinction matters because a driver switch may be intended to make a limited vertical change under specified circumstances, not to move a beam wherever it appears convenient. Do not infer that a higher or lower number means “brighter,” or that a particular number is the correct everyday setting for another model. Use the descriptions and conditions printed in your manual.
Automatic leveling
Other vehicles use an automatic system that adjusts headlight leveling according to vehicle load and ground clearance. An owner-manual example describes this arrangement, which differs from a driver-operated dial. If your vehicle has automatic leveling, do not look for a manual height control unless its own manual identifies one.
Manual and automatic systems share a general purpose—responding to changes that affect beam position—but they do not give the driver the same operation. A manual switch requires the driver to use the positions specified by the manufacturer. An automatic system performs leveling itself, according to its design. The manual’s description is the best way to tell which arrangement your car has; do not assume that a lack of a dashboard dial means the lamps cannot be leveled.
Service adjustment
Some vehicles have a service procedure for adjusting beam aim, with specified setup conditions, tools or equipment. A service screen or adjustment mode does not necessarily provide a driver setting or a way to check aim. For example, the 2024 Tesla Model 3 service manual says its “Adjust Headlights” mode is for trained personnel performing adjustment and should not be used for an aiming check. Follow the manual’s stated audience and purpose for any such function.

This is an important difference between finding an adjustment feature and having a driver-facing instruction. A feature can exist to help a trained technician perform a procedure without being intended as a shortcut for a home inspection. If the manual identifies a mode as service-only, or says trained personnel should use it, do not enter it just to see whether the beam looks aligned.
How to find the right instructions
- Confirm the vehicle details. Note the make, model, model year and market. A procedure for a similarly named model or a different year may not apply.
- Open the owner’s manual for that vehicle. Search the index or digital manual for terms such as “headlight leveling,” “headlamp aim,” “headlight switch,” “instrument panel brightness” or “display brightness.” Terminology varies by manufacturer.
- Identify the control’s purpose. Determine whether the manual describes a driver leveling switch, automatic leveling, a display-brightness control or a service-only aim adjustment.
- Follow the specified operation and conditions. Use only the positions, vehicle loading, tools and setup named for your model. Do not substitute a procedure from another vehicle.
- Stop if the instructions call for service equipment or trained personnel. A visible adjustment mode or screw does not, by itself, make the procedure a driver task.
When reading an instruction, check more than the name of the control. Look for whether it applies to low beams, whether it changes vertical or horizontal aim, and whether the procedure asks for special loading, tire pressure, a level surface, a test machine or a particular tool. Those details can change from one vehicle to another. If the manual’s wording is unclear, ask a qualified service provider to explain whether it is describing driver leveling or a service adjustment rather than experimenting with the control.
Headlight leveling versus headlamp aiming
A leveling device can provide limited vertical adjustment while the vehicle is at rest. NHTSA’s 1999 interpretation explains that such devices are provided on some vehicles; it is a conceptual explanation, not a current survey of which cars have them or a summary of every jurisdiction’s rules. NHTSA also notes that headlamp aim may be mechanically adjustable at rest and that state requirements can apply to correct aim.
In that July 21, 1999 interpretation, NHTSA Chief Counsel Frank Seales, Jr., wrote: “A limited ability to adjust vertical aim on some vehicles is also provided by vehicle leveling devices.” The sentence helps explain why a leveling device and a mechanical aiming adjustment can both exist, but it should not be read as a current inventory of vehicle features or as a complete statement of local rules.
For a driver, the practical distinction is whether the manual describes a control for routine leveling or a procedure to correct aim. Use the former only as directed. Treat aim correction as vehicle-specific work with the conditions and equipment the manufacturer specifies. A numbered leveling setting does not establish that the lamps are correctly aimed.
In other words, a beam can need an aim inspection even if a vehicle has a leveling dial, and the presence of an adjuster does not tell you what setting to use. Leveling is about a limited change in the beam’s vertical position; aiming is about whether the beam pattern is correctly directed under the manufacturer’s specified conditions. Do not treat the two as interchangeable simply because both involve where the light points.
Why aim procedures cannot be generalized
Vehicle procedures differ in preparation, beam patterns, tool requirements and whether horizontal adjustment is available. Some call for controlled conditions or professional equipment. A correct-looking result on a wall is not necessarily a substitute for the prescribed check.

The available examples show why a single internet recipe is unreliable: one manual specifies a distance, low-beam check and particular adjuster tools, while another repair instruction calls for a headlight aim test machine and controlled vehicle preparation. A third manual warns against using an adjustment mode as an aiming check. These are different tasks and audiences, not interchangeable versions of one universal procedure.
Ford Super Duty example: a model-specific service procedure
The 2026 Ford Super Duty owner manual gives one example of vertical aim adjustment: park on level ground about 25 ft (7.6 m) from a wall or screen, switch on the low beams, inspect the pattern and use the specified vertical adjuster. The manual lists a Phillips #2 screwdriver for low/mid series lamps and a 6 mm hex key or Phillips PH1 screwdriver for high series lamps. For that vehicle, horizontal aim is not adjustable.
These details apply to the cited 2026 Super Duty manual and its specified lamp configurations only. They are not a generic home-adjustment recipe. In particular, do not assume the distance, pattern, tool or adjuster location applies to your car.
The tool list is conditional, not a shopping list for every driver: a Phillips #2 screwdriver is relevant only where the vehicle’s own manual calls for it. The same Ford manual specifies different tools for other lamp configurations, which is another reason to identify the exact vehicle and headlamp series before attempting any service procedure. If you do not have the required tool, or cannot identify the specified adjuster, do not substitute a different tool or guess at the adjustment.
Toyota Supra example: controlled repair setup
A NHTSA-hosted Toyota Supra repair instruction specifies preparation such as level ground, correct tire pressure and specified vehicle loading. It also uses a headlight aim test machine and calls for positioning at a right angle to the wall; the illustrated distance and setup are model-specific. This is a repair procedure, not proof that a wall-and-tape method is suitable for every vehicle.

Preparation is part of the procedure, not a cosmetic detail. A manual that calls for a particular load, tire pressure or position is specifying the conditions under which its check is intended to work. The Toyota instruction’s use of a test machine also illustrates why the result of an informal visual check at home should not be treated as equivalent to every manufacturer’s service check.

Before touching a control or adjuster, compare the instruction with the job you are trying to do. The relevant questions are:

- Mechanism: Does the vehicle have a driver-operated leveling switch, automatic leveling, or a service adjustment procedure?
- Purpose: Is the control for compensating for load or ground clearance, or is the procedure intended to correct beam aim?
- Audience: Does the owner’s manual describe a driver operation, or does a service manual restrict the step to trained personnel?
- Equipment: Does the procedure call for a basic specified tool, a particular vehicle setup, or a headlight aim test machine?
- Direction of adjustment: Is the procedure for vertical aim only, or does it describe horizontal aim as well? Some vehicles do not provide a horizontal adjustment.
These comparisons are more useful than looking for a control that seems familiar from another car. A dashboard dial, a touchscreen service mode and a physical adjuster may all relate to headlamps, but their purposes and permitted use can differ. If you cannot match the instruction to your vehicle and goal, stop and get model-specific guidance.
If your manual permits a driver leveling adjustment
Use the vehicle’s own instructions for the switch location and the meaning of each position. A manual may describe a control intended to compensate for load; it may not permit the driver to alter the underlying aim. Do not choose a position based on an example from another manufacturer or assume that the lowest number is correct for every situation.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check whether the control is manual or the vehicle levels the beam automatically.
- Use the position and circumstances stated in the manual.
- Do not use a leveling dial as a substitute for an aim inspection if the beam appears misdirected.
- If the manual’s directions are unclear, ask a qualified service provider to identify the control and its intended use.
Do not treat a numbered position shown in another manufacturer’s instruction as a default. The NHTSA-hosted example that uses position “0” describes a particular check; it does not establish the correct position for other vehicles. Your own manual should tell you whether a position is tied to load or another operating condition, and whether the driver should change it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you meant dashboard or instrument brightness
Instrument-panel illumination is separate from headlamp leveling and aim. Consult the manual for the control that changes cluster or display brightness; its location and operation are vehicle-specific. Do not try to solve a dim dashboard by changing headlamp height, or treat a beam-leveling switch as a lamp-output control.
Likewise, if you want more light on the road, the sources cited here do not establish a universal vehicle setting that increases headlamp output. Aim changes where the beam falls, not the lamp’s output brightness. Check the manual for the feature you mean rather than assuming a brightness slider, cluster control or leveling dial changes the headlamps themselves.
When to arrange an inspection
If your vehicle has been in a collision, have the headlamps inspected. The cited Ford owner manual advises that a vehicle involved in an accident should be checked as soon as possible. Arrange an inspection as well if the manual’s prescribed procedure requires equipment or trained personnel, or if you cannot identify whether a control is for routine leveling or service adjustment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not use a self-selected setting to compensate for a beam that appears misdirected. A leveling control is not necessarily a correction for underlying aim, and the correct check may depend on the vehicle’s specified setup and equipment. If the manual calls for a service procedure, follow that procedure through a qualified provider rather than entering a service mode or turning an adjuster without instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I adjust my headlights?
Start with the owner’s manual for your exact make, model, year and market. It will show whether your vehicle has a driver leveling switch, automatic leveling or a service-only aiming procedure. Follow only the operation and conditions specified for that vehicle.
Where is the headlight leveling switch?
There is no universal location, and some vehicles do not have a driver-operated switch. Search the vehicle’s owner’s manual for “headlight leveling” or “headlamp aim” rather than relying on a menu path from another model.

First determine whether your manual describes a driver leveling control or a service procedure for correcting aim. Use the positions or adjustment steps specified for your vehicle; do not copy another vehicle’s numbers, tools or setup.
Does changing headlight height make the headlights brighter?
No. Leveling or aiming changes where the beam falls, not how much light the lamp produces. The cited manuals do not establish a universal setting to increase headlamp output.
How do I make my dashboard or instrument panel brighter?
That is a separate display or instrument-panel illumination control, not a headlamp leveling setting. Check the owner’s manual for its location and operation for your vehicle.
Can I use an adjustment mode in my car’s touchscreen to check aim?
Not necessarily. The 2024 Tesla Model 3 service manual says its “Adjust Headlights” mode is for trained personnel performing adjustment and should not be used for an aiming check. Follow the intended audience and instructions in your own vehicle’s manual.
Can I use the 25-foot wall method on any car?
No. The 25 ft (7.6 m) distance is part of a specific procedure in the 2026 Ford Super Duty owner manual. Other vehicles may require different conditions, equipment or a headlight aim test machine.
When should I have my headlights inspected?
Have them inspected after a collision; the cited Ford owner manual says a vehicle involved in an accident should be checked as soon as possible. Also arrange service if your manual requires trained personnel or special equipment, or if you cannot identify the control or procedure.
The Bottom Line
Headlight leveling, headlamp aim and dashboard brightness are different things. Check the manual for your exact vehicle before changing a setting, and leave service-only adjustments to qualified personnel. Adjusting beam height changes where light falls, not how bright the lamp is.
