To adjust adaptive cruise control (ACC), first activate the system using your vehicle’s manual, set the cruising speed with the cruise-control controls, then use the dedicated gap or distance control to choose how closely the vehicle follows traffic. Confirm the selected speed and gap on the instrument display, keep watching the road, and be ready to brake, override or switch ACC off. Button locations, labels, gap counts and speed-setting methods differ by make, model and model year, so the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle is the final authority.
ACC is driver assistance, not autonomous driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines it as a system that “Automatically adjusts the vehicle’s speed to keep a pre-set distance from the vehicle in front of it.” When no vehicle is detected ahead, many systems maintain the selected cruising speed like conventional cruise control; when a vehicle is detected, they reduce or increase speed to preserve the selected interval.

Before you change an ACC setting
Identify the exact make, model and year of the vehicle. Manufacturers may use different names for the same function, including Gap Setting, following distance, headway or distance level. Even two vehicles from the same manufacturer can place the control on different steering-wheel buttons, a stalk or a touchscreen.
Read the ACC section of the owner’s manual before driving. NHTSA specifically directs drivers to the manual for information about their vehicle’s driver-assistance technology. Look for four items:

- How ACC is activated and canceled.
- Which control sets, resumes or decreases speed.
- Which control changes the following gap.
- What the instrument-cluster icons and warnings mean.
Do not try to discover the controls while moving in traffic. If you are unsure which button changes the gap, leave ACC off until you can identify it safely.
How to set the cruising speed
Activate ACC
Use the vehicle’s cruise-control button or the procedure in its manual to switch ACC on. Activation does not always begin speed control; some systems enter a standby state until you press Set or another command.
Press Set at the speed you want
Once you are traveling at a suitable speed, press Set. Chevrolet’s instructions, for example, have the driver press Set while driving at the desired speed. The vehicle then stores that speed as the target when no slower vehicle is being tracked.
Make small speed changes
Most systems provide separate controls for increasing or decreasing the set speed. The exact increment and whether a short press differs from a long press are vehicle-specific. Watch the speed shown in the instrument cluster after each input rather than assuming a particular increment.
Use a detected speed limit when the vehicle supports it
Tesla’s Model 3 manual describes a different method: the driver can select the speed-limit sign on the touchscreen to change cruising speed to the current detected limit, including any selected offset. This is an example of a model-specific feature, not a universal ACC function. Treat a detected limit as assistance and verify that it matches the posted road sign.

How to change the following distance
Find the gap or distance control
Look for a steering-wheel button, scroll control or repeated press command identified in the manual. Chevrolet uses a steering-wheel Gap Setting button. Tesla’s Model 3 manual uses the steering wheel’s right scroll button. Hyundai’s 2026 Smart Cruise Control manual describes cycling through numbered distance levels.
Cycle through the available levels
Press the control once, or move it as instructed, and watch the cluster or center display. Continue until the desired level appears. Do not rely only on the physical position of the button; the display confirms which setting is active.

Confirm the selection before relying on ACC
Some systems show bars, a vehicle icon with distance marks, words such as Near, Medium or Far, or numbers such as Distance 1 through Distance 4. The labels are not standardized. Confirm the selected value every time you start a trip or resume ACC after changing vehicles.
What a following-distance setting actually means
On many ACC systems, the gap is time-based rather than a fixed number of metres or feet. At a higher speed, the same time interval produces a longer physical distance; at a lower speed, it produces a shorter one. Chevrolet explains that the distance varies with speed, and Tesla describes each setting as a time-based distance.
A time setting is measured from the moment the vehicle ahead passes a reference point until your vehicle reaches that point. It is therefore different from selecting a permanently fixed road distance. The system continually changes the physical gap as traffic speed changes.

Manufacturers do not use a common scale. One vehicle’s “Far” may not equal another vehicle’s highest setting, and a numbered level cannot be compared directly with a label such as “Medium” without consulting both manuals.

The following examples show why the exact manual matters. They are descriptions of the cited vehicles and should not be treated as universal ACC specifications.
| Vehicle or source example | Control or labels | Published interval information |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet ACC example | Steering-wheel Gap Setting button; Far, Medium and Near | Chevrolet states that the physical distance varies with speed. |
| Tesla Model 3 manual | Right steering-wheel scroll button adjusts following distance | Each setting corresponds to a time-based distance. |
| Hyundai 2026 Smart Cruise Control manual | Cycles through Distance 4, Distance 3, Distance 2 and Distance 1 | The manual identifies four selectable levels. |
| Ford manual example | Four gap settings | At 100 km/h (62 mph): 1 second/28 m (31 yd); 1.4 seconds/39 m (43 yd); 1.8 seconds/50 m (55 yd); 2.2 seconds/61 m (67 yd). |
The Ford figures are examples from a Ford manual; the publication date is not stated in the referenced search result. They apply at 100 km/h (62 mph), not at every speed, and they are not a general recommendation for other vehicles.
A practical adjustment sequence
- Prepare before moving. Identify the ACC and gap controls in the owner’s manual. Know how to cancel the system and how to apply the brakes.
- Enter a suitable speed. Drive at the speed you intend to maintain, subject to the posted limit and traffic conditions.
- Activate ACC. Press the vehicle’s ACC or cruise-control button according to the manual.
- Store the target speed. Press Set, or use the model’s specified speed-setting command. Verify the number shown in the cluster.
- Select the gap. Press the Gap Setting, distance or equivalent control. Stop when the desired label or number appears.
- Check the display. Confirm both the set speed and following-distance indicator. If either is missing or flashing, consult the manual before continuing.
- Monitor traffic continuously. Keep your hands and attention available for immediate intervention. ACC may slow for a detected vehicle, but you remain responsible for steering, speed and braking.
Changing settings while ACC is active
Increasing or decreasing speed
Use the speed-up or speed-down control in small steps and observe the new set speed. If a vehicle ahead is slower, the car may not accelerate to the stored speed until the lane ahead is clear. That behavior is normal for a system maintaining a selected gap.
Changing the gap behind a detected vehicle
Use the gap control while ACC is tracking traffic. The display should change immediately or after the next control input. A longer time setting increases the road distance at the same traffic speed; a shorter setting reduces it. Because the interval is dynamic, judge the result by the displayed setting and traffic context rather than by attempting to estimate metres from the driver’s seat.

Resuming after a slowdown or stop
Resume behavior differs by vehicle. Read the manual for whether ACC resumes automatically, requires a Resume command or cancels below a particular speed. Never press Resume without first checking the lane and traffic ahead.
How to choose a setting without assuming one universal “safe” gap
The cited manuals and safety guidance do not establish one gap setting that is safe for every road, speed, weather condition or vehicle. Instead, use the available settings as a driver-controlled choice and account for the situation in front of you.
- Higher speeds: because a time-based interval converts to more road distance as speed rises, verify that the displayed setting gives you the space you intend.
- Dense or rapidly changing traffic: keep your attention on vehicles entering the gap and be prepared to brake if the system does not detect a vehicle promptly.
- Roads with frequent speed changes: monitor the set speed so a previous setting does not remain active after the limit changes.
- Any situation the system cannot handle: cancel ACC and drive manually. The driver must intervene whenever the system cannot maintain the intended gap or speed.
These are operating considerations, not a promise that a particular level is appropriate in every circumstance. Follow the vehicle manual and applicable traffic law.

Why the displayed gap may not look like the number you expected
The labels are not standardized
“Near,” “Medium” and “Far” are Chevrolet labels. “Distance 1” through “Distance 4” are Hyundai labels. A Tesla time-based setting and a Ford interval expressed in seconds describe the same general concept using different interfaces. Do not translate one manufacturer’s label directly into another’s.
The physical distance changes with speed
A time-based gap cannot be checked against one fixed metre value. The same selected interval produces different road distances at different speeds. Ford’s published numbers explicitly demonstrate this by tying the figures to 100 km/h (62 mph).
The system may be following a detected vehicle
When a vehicle ahead is detected, ACC adjusts speed to preserve the selected gap rather than holding the stored cruising speed. When detection ends, the vehicle may return toward the stored speed, subject to the system’s design and the driver’s settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshooting an unexpected ACC setting
The gap control does nothing
- Check that ACC, rather than ordinary cruise control, is active.
- Confirm that you are pressing the documented gap or distance control, not a speed or lane-assistance button.
- Look for the new setting on the instrument display after each press.
- If the control remains unavailable, cancel ACC and consult the manual for operating prerequisites or warnings.
The car accelerates when you expected it to follow traffic
- Verify that a vehicle ahead is actually detected by checking the driver display.
- Check the stored speed; the car may be returning toward that speed after the lane ahead clears.
- Reduce or cancel ACC if the detected target does not match the traffic you intend to follow.
The car does not maintain the selected gap
- Take control immediately rather than waiting for the system to correct itself.
- Check for a warning or canceled-ACC message.
- Review the manual’s limitations and restart only when the system indicates normal operation.
The displayed speed is not the road’s limit
Manually compare the set speed with the posted sign. Tesla’s Model 3 example can use a detected speed-limit sign and an offset, but detection is not a substitute for observing the road. Correct the set speed or cancel ACC when the displayed information is wrong.
Comparing ACC systems by the details that matter
If you are comparing two vehicles, evaluate the controls and information rather than assuming that one brand’s terminology transfers to another. Use the following checklist:
- Control location and action: steering-wheel button, scroll control, stalk or touchscreen; single press, repeated press or scrolling.
- Number and labels of settings: words such as Near/Far or numbered levels.
- How the interval is described: seconds, metres at a stated speed, or only a relative label.
- Speed adjustment method: manual increase/decrease controls, Set/Resume behavior, or a detected speed-limit command.
- Driver responsibilities and limitations: warnings about monitoring, overriding and conditions in which the system may not maintain the intended gap or speed.
This comparison prevents a common mistake: assuming that a four-level system has the same intervals as another manufacturer’s four-level system.
Historical figures should not be used as current specifications
An older NHTSA interface report compares named early-2000s vehicles and lists system ranges and headway values. That report is useful for showing that ACC interfaces and intervals have varied over time, but it is historical and limited to the vehicles studied. Do not use those figures to set expectations for a current vehicle or to select a gap while driving.
Quick Recap
What to remember before every ACC trip
- Use the manual for the exact make, model and year.
- Set speed and following distance separately; changing one does not necessarily change the other.
- Confirm the selected values on the display.
- Interpret the gap as a vehicle-specific interval, often time-based, not as a universal metre or feet value.
- Keep watching traffic and be ready to override or disengage ACC at any time.
