Brake-light (stop-lamp) switch adjustment depends on the vehicle and switch design, so there is no safe universal gap or pedal-travel setting. Check the factory procedure for your exact year, make, model, and trim before changing the switch. If the lamps stay on, fail to illuminate, or come on at the wrong point, diagnose the cause first; adjustment may not be the right fix.
Can a brake-light switch be adjusted, or does it need replacement?
Either may be necessary. Some switches are designed to be adjusted or self-set during installation; others may be faulty, damaged, or improperly installed. Symptoms alone do not establish which is true. Inspect and test the switch, connector, pedal contact point or stopper, and pedal return according to the vehicle’s service procedure before deciding to adjust or replace parts.
The procedure is specific to the vehicle. Subaru’s 2015 manufacturer bulletin states that stop-lamp switch installation and adjustment varies by model: Subaru of America Bulletin 06-48-15R. Use current factory service information for your vehicle rather than applying another car’s steps or measurements.
Why do brake lights stay on or fail to come on?
The switch may not be contacting the pedal as intended, may be out of adjustment, or may be damaged. A connector problem or an issue with the pedal’s contact point, stopper, or return can also affect operation. These are possible diagnostic areas, not a universal fault list: follow the service procedure for the vehicle to identify the cause.

- Lamps stay on after pedal release: Check switch position and pedal return as directed by the manufacturer.
- Lamps do not come on: Check the switch and electrical connection using the vehicle’s diagnostic procedure; do not assume adjustment alone will restore operation.
- Lamps come on at an unexpected pedal point: Measure activation travel only against the applicable vehicle specification.
If the brake pedal does not return normally, the brakes drag, or a warning light appears, have the vehicle checked using the relevant service information by a qualified technician.
How much should the brake pedal move before the lights come on?
There is no single figure for all vehicles. Some procedures specify switch clearance; others specify pedal activation travel, and the measurement method differs. Do not use a value from another make or model.

For the models covered by Subaru Bulletin 06-48-15R, the specified stop-lamp activation stroke is 5.5 mm ± 2.5 mm—greater than 3 mm and less than 8 mm. Subaru’s procedure measures the distance from the pedal to the floor mat with the pedal at rest and again when the stop lamps first illuminate, then subtracts the readings. This is a specification for the bulletin’s covered models, not a general standard.
Why switch adjustment methods differ
Switch designs and installation requirements vary. The cited service procedures illustrate why a generic adjustment recipe can be unsafe:

| Vehicle and source | Procedure feature | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2010 Dodge Charger service procedure | Resets a ratcheting plunger | Warns that excessive force on the pedal can damage the switch or striker. |
| 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt service procedure | Installs the switch with the pedal fully released, then checks plunger extension | Warns that improper adjustment can cause brake drag, heat buildup, and excessive lining wear. |
| 2000 Porsche Boxster service procedure | Uses a distinct adjustment approach and checks pedal travel | Its method and measurements apply to that vehicle, not other models. |
These examples demonstrate variation; they are not a substitute for the exact, current procedure for your vehicle. Depending on the design, the switch may use a self-adjusting or ratcheting plunger, a twist-lock, or a threaded or sliding mount. Whether the pedal must be held up, depressed, or left at rest—and whether the specification is a clearance or activation stroke—must come from the applicable service information.

- Identify the vehicle precisely. Confirm year, make, model, and trim, then locate its factory service procedure for the stop-lamp switch.
- Diagnose the symptom. Determine whether the lamps remain on, do not illuminate, or activate at an unexpected point. Inspect the switch, connector, pedal contact point or stopper, and pedal return as the service procedure directs.
- Follow the specified method and measurement. Use only the stated pedal position, adjustment method, and vehicle-specific clearance or activation-travel value. Do not force a plunger, bend a bracket, or set a generic gap unless the manufacturer procedure expressly calls for it.
- Verify operation after the work. Confirm the stop lamps illuminate with the intended pedal movement and go out when the pedal is released. Complete any scan-tool or additional brake-system checks required by the vehicle procedure.
If the switch is damaged or testing shows it is faulty, adjustment will not repair it. If you cannot confirm the correct procedure or the result, have a qualified technician check the switch and brake system.
