Without your location or a particular listing, no nearby cars or local prices can be named; use the checks below to evaluate the cars you find.
Start with local inventory and a realistic budget
Enter your ZIP or postal code in Tesla’s inventory search or a reputable third-party marketplace. Shortlist cars that fit your actual passenger, cargo, commute, and charging needs—not simply the lowest advertised price. Compare Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X on the specific configuration and condition of each car; there is no universally best model or local price established here.
Build a budget from the transaction’s real costs: asking price, taxes, registration, delivery or transport, financing costs, insurance, and any immediate tire or repair work. If buying through Tesla, check the order terms for delivery-center transport fees; Tesla says a fee may apply and depends on distance. Availability and fees can change, so verify them on the specific listing.
Know whether the car is Tesla Certified Pre-Owned
Tesla Certified Pre-Owned
Tesla’s current U.S. Certified Pre-Owned ordering page says each CPO vehicle passes a 119-point inspection and has an AutoCheck vehicle-history report. Tesla’s stated mechanical standards include at least 5/32-inch tire tread and 6 mm brake-pad thickness, along with checks of areas such as steering and suspension, powertrain, brakes, displays, restraints, and charging equipment. Review the individual car’s detail page and report. Tesla also says cosmetic wear is expected and open recalls may remain, so CPO status is not a promise of a flawless vehicle. Private-party and independent-dealer listings
Tesla’s CPO inspection applies to Tesla’s own CPO inventory, not to a car sold privately or by an independent dealer. For those cars, request the VIN, title and history information, service and repair records, and documentation for any claimed upgrades or repairs. Arrange an inspection by an independent technician qualified to assess EVs; ask Tesla service about concerns that may require diagnosis.
Inspect the specific car, not just the listing
Arrange an in-person inspection or a qualified independent inspection before committing. Test the car only with the seller’s permission and according to the seller’s procedure. Look for evidence of structural repairs, mismatched paint or panel gaps, damaged glass or wheels, uneven tire wear, suspension noises, warning lights, and signs of water or other damage.

- Test the charging port and confirm what charging equipment is included.
- Check cameras, displays, HVAC, doors, windows, keys, and access cards.
- Ask about repairs, service history, and any warning or intermittent problems.
Assess battery information and charging practicality
Ask the seller for the car’s displayed charge and range information, then compare the exact configuration and your expected driving conditions with your daily route. Tesla says CPO listings may show battery range estimates; check the individual listing and vehicle. Dashboard range is not, by itself, a diagnosis of battery health, and no universal used-Tesla degradation percentage is established here.
Consider whether you can charge at home and map public charging options for your regular routes. Tesla describes home charging as the most convenient option and says the vehicle’s navigation displays charging options. Charging access is part of whether a particular car fits your life, not just a feature to consider after purchase. Tesla charging guidance

Verify warranty coverage and recalls by VIN
Read the car’s warranty terms
Tesla’s general U.S. warranty page lists a new-vehicle basic warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. For a Tesla CPO vehicle, Tesla describes the remaining original basic warranty plus an additional 1 year or 10,000 miles after that coverage expires; if the original basic warranty has already expired, the additional term is described as one year or 10,000 miles from delivery. These are program descriptions, not a guarantee of what remains on a particular car. Battery and drive-unit coverage varies by model and version. Check the vehicle’s warranty in the Tesla app or its supplied warranty documents; Tesla identifies the individual vehicle’s warranty as authoritative. Tesla Vehicle Warranty
Check open recalls and repair status
Search the VIN in Tesla’s or NHTSA’s recall tool before paying, then confirm whether any remedy has been completed. Tesla says open recalls can remain on CPO vehicles and that recall service is free regardless of vehicle age or mileage; the affected vehicles and remedy depend on the VIN and campaign. A cited Model Y certification-label campaign applies only to specified production periods, illustrating why model year alone cannot establish whether a car is affected. Complete the sale and transfer Tesla account access
Before payment, confirm the title, any lien release, bill of sale, included equipment, payment arrangements, delivery terms, and the registration and tax obligations in your jurisdiction. If a seller advertises a software capability, subscription, upgrade, credit, or other transferable feature, verify that item individually rather than assuming it follows the car.

Set up the car for your model year
After purchase, consult the owner’s manual for the exact model year and region, review warranty information in the app, set up charging and app access, and schedule any needed service. For accessories, confirm year and configuration compatibility. Tesla’s Model Y manual says genuine floor mats should be used and the driver mat must be securely fastened; do not place another mat on top, because it can interfere with the pedals.
