BMW’s online archive is publicly available for information and research, and BMW Group Classic is the official place to start. The access claim has an important limit: BMW says most of the archive database is public, not that every record is available or that public access grants permission to reproduce its material.
How do you access the BMW Group Archive?
- Open BMW Group Classic’s BMW Group Archive page.
- Follow its link to the BMW Group Archive to look for company, brand, product-history, or publication material.
- For model-specific history, use the historical model-overview pages linked from BMW’s announcement about the BMW, MINI, and BMW Motorrad catalogs.
BMW Group Classic describes the archive as a first port of call for questions about the company, its brands, and its products. BMW says it welcomes owners and fans as well as journalists, writers, and researchers. Its Download Centre also points readers toward archive-related resources.

Is the BMW archive free to use?
BMW’s 27 February 2025 announcement says most of the online archive database is publicly available for information and research. That describes access; it does not establish that every item can be viewed or downloaded, or that visitors may reuse documents and images without permission. Check the terms and rights attached to a specific item before reproducing it.
The “now” in the headline needs context. BMW had already described an earlier version of its historical archive as freely searchable in a 2005 announcement. The 2025 news was that the archive had been revised in 2024 and that historical model overviews were being made available online to the general public—not that BMW history had only just become searchable.

What can you find in BMW’s historic archive?
BMW describes its archive as covering the histories of the company, its brands, and its products. The materials named in the 2025 announcement include brochures, workshop literature, onboard literature, and specialist books. The announcement also introduced a public historical overview of BMW models.
BMW model overview
BMW Group’s 27 February 2025 announcement says the online overview covered 424 BMW models from 1928 to 2008. BMW also reported that 614 data sets and 524 images had been processed for this model-overview offering. These figures describe the announcement’s offering; they are not current totals for the archive as a whole.

MINI and BMW Motorrad
BMW said historical model overviews for MINI and BMW Motorrad had been available to the public since 2021. The 2025 announcement points readers to all three marque catalogs, but does not give comparable model totals for MINI or BMW Motorrad.
