BMW’s September 2025 starter recall, NHTSA campaign 25V636, covers 196,355 potentially affected BMW and Toyota vehicles. A faulty engine starter relay may corrode, overheat and short circuit, increasing the risk of fire. NHTSA advised owners to park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until they confirm their car is not covered or the repair is complete. Check the vehicle by VIN or license plate; a model year alone does not establish eligibility.
What is the BMW starter recall?
BMW of North America reported campaign 25V636 to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on September 23, 2025; NHTSA’s acknowledgement is dated September 25. BMW’s defect description, reproduced in the acknowledgement, says: “The engine starter relay may corrode, causing the relay to overheat and short circuit.” The resulting risk is a vehicle fire. Which BMW and Toyota models are listed?
NHTSA’s acknowledgement lists 196,355 potentially affected vehicles across the following models and model years. This is the campaign population, not a count of confirmed defective vehicles or BMW-branded vehicles alone; the campaign also includes Toyota Supra vehicles.

How to check whether your vehicle is affected
- Find the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, usually visible through the windshield on the driver’s side or on the vehicle registration.
- Enter the VIN or license plate in NHTSA’s recall lookup. A specific-vehicle search shows unrepaired recalls.
- Check eligibility through BMW’s recall lookup, which accepts the 17-digit VIN.
- If a recent recall does not appear, check again later. NHTSA notes that recently announced campaigns may not immediately have every affected VIN identified. The 25V636 acknowledgement said VINs were scheduled to become searchable beginning November 14, 2025.

Do you need to park your BMW outside?
Yes, if your vehicle may be covered and you have not confirmed it is unaffected or had the remedy completed. NHTSA’s September 26, 2025 consumer alert instructed owners to “park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles” until they verify the vehicle is not subject to the recall or have it repaired. What is the repair, and does it cost anything?
For an affected vehicle, dealers will replace the engine starter free of charge, according to NHTSA’s acknowledgement. BMW says recall work performed by a BMW Partner is free. Already paid for a repair?
The campaign filing says owners who paid for the remedy before notification may be eligible for reimbursement under BMW Group’s reimbursement plan. How this differs from the 2026 starter recall
NHTSA campaign 26V056, acknowledged February 6, 2026, is a separate recall. It describes a starter that may overheat and catch fire because of wear on an internal component, and has its own affected-vehicle population, model scope and free dealer replacement remedy. Do not combine its vehicles or defect description with campaign 25V636. Use a VIN lookup to see which campaign, if any, applies to your car.
