The R35 Nissan GT-R uses ATTESA E-TS, an electronically controlled, rear-drive-biased all-wheel-drive system. In normal driving Nissan describes the torque split as 0:100 front-to-rear, meaning all available drive torque is sent rearward. As speed, steering, tire slip, lateral acceleration, road surface and yaw behavior change, the controller can continuously increase front-axle contribution to as much as 50:50.
The system is unusual because the GT-R’s transmission, transfer case and final drive sit at the rear in Nissan’s Premium Midship layout. ATTESA E-TS therefore combines rear-drive behavior with on-demand front-axle assistance, using yaw-rate feedback to help the car follow the driver’s intended line.

What ATTESA E-TS does
ATTESA E-TS is the R35 GT-R’s front-to-rear torque-management system. It is not a permanently locked all-wheel-drive arrangement and it is not a set of driver-selected 2WD and 4WD modes. Nissan describes the distribution as continuously variable from 0:100 to 50:50, front axle to rear axle.
At the 0:100 end, the GT-R behaves as a rear-drive car. At the 50:50 end, torque is shared evenly between the axles. Every split between those points is possible in response to the conditions the control system detects. “Rear-drive biased” therefore describes the system’s normal operating character, not a mechanical limitation that prevents front-axle drive.

The system’s purpose is to allocate available drive torque in a way that supports traction and the vehicle’s intended path. Nissan’s descriptions establish the operating range and control inputs, but do not publish a simple fixed map that says, for example, “this speed always produces this percentage.” The actual bias depends on the combination of inputs at that moment.
Why the R35 layout is different
Most front-engine AWD cars are explained as having an engine and transmission at the front, with a transfer device sending torque along the vehicle to the rear axle. The R35 uses a different package called Premium Midship.
Nissan places the transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear. The arrangement uses an independent rear transaxle and does not use a conventional torque tube. This rear-mounted drivetrain packaging helps Nissan describe the GT-R as rear-drive biased while still permitting torque to be directed to the front axle when the control system calls for it.
The layout should not be confused with the torque split itself. Packaging describes where the major drivetrain components are located; ATTESA E-TS describes how drive torque is apportioned between the front and rear axles. A rear transaxle does not mean the front wheels are passive, and a front-axle contribution does not turn the system into a permanently equal 50:50 AWD setup.

How the control strategy works
ATTESA E-TS considers more than whether one wheel is visibly spinning. Nissan identifies several inputs that influence the front/rear decision:
| Input | Why it matters to the controller |
|---|---|
| Vehicle speed | Provides the operating context for interpreting steering, acceleration and slip. |
| Steering angle | Indicates the path the driver is asking the vehicle to follow. |
| Lateral acceleration | Shows how strongly the car is being loaded sideways in a turn. |
| Tire slip | Identifies a loss of grip at a driven wheel or axle. |
| Road surface | Helps account for changing available grip, such as a slippery or inconsistent surface. |
| Yaw rate | Measures the vehicle’s actual rotational response around its vertical axis. |
The GT-R-specific part of the strategy is yaw-rate feedback. From the steering angle, the system calculates a target yaw rate—the rotational response expected for the driver’s requested path. Yaw-rate and G sensors report what the vehicle is actually doing. The controller compares the target and measured behavior, then adjusts front/rear torque bias.
This is a feedback process intended to help the car track the driver’s intended line. It is not a guarantee that the vehicle will always take a corner at a particular angle, eliminate understeer or prevent a loss of control. Grip, speed, tires, surface condition and driver inputs remain decisive.

What the variable split feels like in different situations
Steady driving on a dry road
When conditions are stable and the rear axle has sufficient grip, Nissan’s described 0:100 condition lets the GT-R behave like a rear-drive car. The front axle is not required to receive a fixed share simply because the vehicle is capable of AWD.

Hard acceleration
During strong acceleration, the controller can respond to tire slip and the other measured conditions by increasing the front axle’s contribution. The change is continuous within the 0:100-to-50:50 range, rather than a driver feeling a binary switch from “RWD” to “AWD.” The exact split at a given instant is not specified by Nissan as a single published percentage.
Corner entry and corner exit
Steering angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rate give the system information about the corner and the vehicle’s response to it. If the measured yaw behavior differs from the target calculated from steering input, ATTESA E-TS can alter torque bias. That intervention is intended to support the requested line, but it does not replace sound cornering technique or available tire grip.
Low-grip or changing surfaces
On a surface where grip varies, tire slip and road-surface information become especially important. The controller can bring the front axle into the torque distribution as conditions require, up to the stated 50:50 maximum. Because the system is continuously controlled, the front/rear relationship can change as the vehicle moves from one patch of grip to another.
When the car is already sliding
Yaw feedback is a response system, not a promise of immunity from a spin. If speed is excessive for the available grip, or if steering and throttle inputs overwhelm the tires, no torque allocation can guarantee recovery. ATTESA E-TS is one part of the vehicle’s overall dynamics rather than a substitute for electronic stability control, tires or driver judgment.

Front/rear torque is not left/right torque
A common explanation error is to treat every GT-R differential function as part of ATTESA E-TS. The systems operate in different directions.
| Function | Component or system | Wheels affected |
|---|---|---|
| Torque distribution between axles | ATTESA E-TS | Front axle versus rear axle |
| Speed difference between rear wheels | Rear final-drive 1.5-way mechanical limited-slip differential | Left rear versus right rear |
The 1.5-way mechanical limited-slip differential identified in the 2023 U.S. GT-R owner manual manages the speed difference between the two rear wheels. It does not decide how much torque goes to the front axle. Conversely, ATTESA E-TS’s front/rear control does not describe the rear differential’s left/right action.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tires are part of the AWD system’s operating conditions
Nissan warns that an excessive front/rear tire-diameter difference can trigger a slowly flashing 4WD warning. The reason is fundamental to an electronically controlled AWD system: the controller must interpret wheel speeds and vehicle motion, and a substantial circumference mismatch can make those signals inconsistent with the car’s expected behavior.

When replacing tires, confirm the exact approved sizes and matching requirements in the owner documentation for that vehicle or with a GT-R specialist. Do not assume that two tires with the same nominal diameter, or two tires from different designs, will have the same loaded rolling circumference.
AWD warnings and what to do
A lit or flashing 4WD warning
An AWD warning is a service signal, not an invitation to test the system with aggressive wheelspin. Nissan owner information directs the owner to have a warning inspected by a Nissan GT-R service facility. If the warning is slowly flashing, check that the front and rear tires are the correct sizes and that their pressures are set correctly. If the warning continues, arrange professional diagnosis rather than continuing to drive hard.
Sustained rear-wheel spinning
Nissan cautions that sustained rear-wheel spinning can create excessive heat and damage the AWD system. Another owner-manual warning explains that spinning the rear wheels can raise AWD clutch temperatures. Avoid deliberately holding the car in prolonged wheelspin, especially when a warning is already present.

- Verify the approved front and rear dimensions for the specific model year and market.
- Check that all four tires meet the required matching and construction specifications.
- Set cold pressures to the vehicle’s stated values.
- Inspect for a 4WD warning before using high throttle or high cornering loads.
- If a warning appears or remains, stop treating it as a handling characteristic and have the system checked.
What Nissan does—and does not—specify publicly
Official Nissan material establishes the 0:100-to-50:50 operating range, the rear-drive-biased normal behavior, the sensor inputs, the yaw-rate comparison and the Premium Midship packaging. It does not provide a complete public description of the hydraulic pressure circuit, pump sequence, clutch-pack construction, response time or a precise proprietary control algorithm.
That distinction matters when reading claims about the system. It is accurate to say that ATTESA E-TS continuously adjusts front/rear torque in response to measured driving and road conditions. It is not accurate to invent an exact millisecond response, a guaranteed cornering outcome or a detailed internal sequence that Nissan has not documented in the cited owner and press materials.
Misconceptions to avoid
- “The GT-R is always 50:50 AWD.” Nissan describes normal operation at 0:100 and continuous adjustment toward 50:50.
- “It is just a wheelspin detector.” Nissan also names steering angle, speed, lateral acceleration, road surface and yaw rate.
- “The rear limited-slip differential controls the front wheels.” The rear mechanical LSD manages left/right rear-wheel speed difference; ATTESA E-TS manages front/rear allocation.
- “Any R35 can use the same tire sizes.” The 255/40ZRF20 front and 285/35ZRF20 rear combination is documented here as a 2014 example only.
- “AWD guarantees the intended line.” Yaw feedback is designed to help the vehicle follow the requested path, but it cannot overcome inadequate grip or unsafe inputs.
The practical takeaway for an R35 owner
Think of ATTESA E-TS as a continuously managed rear-drive character with permission to use the front axle whenever the vehicle’s measured state calls for it. The system watches how fast the car is moving, what the steering requests, how the body is accelerating and rotating, whether the tires are slipping and what the road allows. It then varies front/rear torque within Nissan’s stated range.
For ownership, correct and consistently matched tires are not cosmetic details; they are operating requirements for the AWD control system. Treat a 4WD warning as a fault to investigate, avoid sustained wheelspin, and keep the rear limited-slip differential’s left/right job separate from ATTESA E-TS’s front/rear job. That is the clearest way to understand what the R35’s unusual drivetrain is doing without attributing undocumented hardware behavior or guaranteed handling results to it.
