The SUV’s crashworthiness and restraint systems may have helped protect him, but available evidence does not prove that any single feature saved his life—or establish exactly which safety devices deployed.
What happened in the 2021 Genesis GV80 crash?
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department post-collision report identifies Woods as the driver of a 2021 Genesis GV80 and documents the crash investigation. Investigators identified unsafe speed for conditions and an inability to negotiate the curve as primary causal factors. The report’s findings do not support attributing the crash to a defect, distraction, or a particular safety system’s failure or intervention.
Those findings describe why investigators concluded the crash occurred; they do not explain precisely how each restraint or other safety feature performed during the rollover.
How the GV80’s airbags and pretensioners are designed to work
The 2021 GV80 owner’s manual describes side airbags for the front and outboard second-row seats, a front-center airbag on the inboard side of the driver’s seatback, and curtain airbags along the roof rails above the front and rear doors. The curtain airbags are designed to help protect the heads of front-seat and rear outboard occupants in certain side impacts.

The manual says the front-center, side and/or curtain airbags, along with seat-belt pretensioners, may activate when the restraint system detects a rollover or possible rollover. The system uses a rollover sensor. Frontal airbags are not designed to inflate in rollover accidents.
These are conditional protections, not a guarantee of deployment. Genesis says airbags are not designed to inflate in every side-impact or rollover situation. The manual also stresses wearing seat belts and warns against seat covers or objects that could interfere with airbags. Airbags are supplemental restraints; they do not replace seat belts.

What independent safety tests say about the 2021 GV80
Independent crash tests provide useful evidence about how a vehicle performs under standardized conditions. They cannot reconstruct Woods’s crash or establish which equipment activated in it.

The organizations use different protocols, so their star ratings and category labels should not be treated as directly interchangeable. Occupant protection in the GV80 and the risk it may pose to people in another vehicle are also separate considerations.

What can—and cannot—be concluded about Woods’s survival?
The investigation, owner’s manual and test results support a careful conclusion: the GV80’s structure and restraint design may have helped protect Woods in a severe crash. They do not establish that a particular airbag or pretensioner deployed, identify the contribution of any one feature, or prove that a single system saved his life.
For the vehicle’s instructions, consult the 2021 Genesis GV80 owner’s manual. The crash investigation is documented in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department post-collision report. Independent ratings are available from IIHS and Euro NCAP.
