The Yamaha Ténéré 700 is designed as a middleweight adventure motorcycle that can serve both touring and trail riding. Its 689 cm³ parallel-twin, 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels, long-travel suspension, rider-mobility-focused layout and adjustable electronic aids explain that dual-purpose brief. Those features describe Yamaha’s engineering intent—not proof that it outperforms other motorcycles or guarantees comfort on every road or trail.
What makes the Ténéré 700 a dual-purpose motorcycle?
The balance comes from combining a road-oriented engine and touring technology with a chassis and controls intended to accommodate unpaved riding. Yamaha’s February 2025 Japanese-market announcement says the update advances off-road capability while improving touring convenience. The standard Ténéré 700 is the most useful reference point for the range. The Low changes suspension and seat height to suit rider fit; the Rally raises the off-road emphasis with more suspension travel, taller ergonomics and specified underbody protection. Specifications differ by model year, market and power version, so figures for one version should not be applied to another.
How the Ténéré 700 is equipped for road use
Engine and touring information
The 2025 Japanese-market model announced by Yamaha uses a 689 cm³ engine and a 6.3-inch connected TFT display. Yamaha also lists Y-Connect smartphone functions, turn-by-turn display through Google Maps integration and a standard USB-C charging port for that market. Selectable power delivery
The 2025 update adds Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) and two ride modes, SPORT and EXPLORER. They offer selectable power delivery, but Yamaha’s mode names alone do not establish which is preferable for a particular road, rider or weather condition. Availability and specifications should be checked against the local model-year version.
What supports off-road riding?
Wheel size and suspension travel
The cited 2025 UK standard-model factsheet specifies a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel, with 210 mm of front and 200 mm of rear suspension travel. These dimensions are part of the motorcycle’s off-road-oriented design. Yamaha’s specifications describe the setup; they are not a substitute for a rider’s assessment of terrain, skill or conditions. Rider movement and controls
Yamaha describes the flatter tank-and-seat arrangement as giving riders more freedom to move. The footrests have removable rubber inserts, allowing the underlying surface to be used for off-road grip. Electronic settings
Yamaha describes traction control settings of ON or OFF, and ABS options that keep both wheels active, disable rear ABS, or disable ABS at both wheels. These choices let riders configure the systems; they are not universal recommendations for every surface or experience level. Choose the standard model for the broadest balance
The standard version is the general-purpose reference: the cited European 2025 specification pairs 210/200 mm suspension travel with an 875 mm seat. That combination makes it the middle option in this lineup’s stated dimensions, rather than a guarantee that it will fit every rider or suit every route.
Consider the Low for a lower seat
The Low’s cited 2025 UK seat height is 860 mm, 15 mm below the standard model, and its suspension travel is also reduced. It is a rider-fit variation, not simply the standard motorcycle with unchanged off-road dimensions. A seat-height number alone cannot determine whether a rider can comfortably manage the bike; try the local version in person if fit is a concern.

Choose the Rally for greater off-road emphasis
The cited 2026 European 35kW Rally specification lists 230/220 mm suspension travel, 255 mm ground clearance and a 910 mm seat. Yamaha’s 2026 brochure identifies rally ergonomics and a 4 mm aluminum skid plate. The taller seat and added travel distinguish it from the standard version; the brochure’s skid plate specification applies to Rally equipment and does not establish fitment on other years or trims. - Check the specification for your country, model year and power version; figures above are explicitly tied to cited European or Japanese versions.
- Confirm whether you are looking at the standard, Low or Rally model. Their seat heights, suspension travel and equipment are not interchangeable.
- Assess rider fit directly, particularly for the 910 mm seat height listed for the cited Rally version.
- Confirm accessory compatibility with the exact year and trim. The cited 4 mm skid plate is Rally equipment; the available information does not establish that it fits every Ténéré 700.
