The 2026 Mustang GTD is a modern, track-focused Mustang with Ford-published figures of 815 horsepower, 664 lb-ft of torque and a 202 mph top speed. The first-generation Ford GT refers here to the 2005–2006 mid-engine supercar. The available Ford sources support a useful comparison of their engineering priorities, but not a complete numerical head-to-head: they do not establish a period-correct specification sheet or comparable Nürburgring time for the first-generation GT.
What the comparison covers
“First-generation Ford GT” means the 2005–2006 car—not the separate 2017–2022 Ford GT. Ford’s 2015 announcement of the later car describes a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe powered by a twin-turbo V6, so its specifications should not be carried over to the earlier GT. Ford’s 2015 reveal concerns that later generation.
The GTD and the 2005–2006 GT are products of different eras and engineering programs. Ford’s published information makes the GTD’s current performance and hardware clear; the historical source available for the first-generation car supports a narrower discussion of its construction, not a complete set of figures for direct comparison.
Published Mustang GTD figures
Ford’s current U.S. product information lists the 2026 Mustang GTD with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 producing 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, and a top speed of 202 mph. These are Ford-published specifications, not results from independent instrumented testing. The same figures appeared in Ford’s 2024 release for the 2025 GTD. Ford’s 2026 Mustang GTD page and Ford’s 2024 GTD release provide the specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- Brand new box
- Real rubber tires.
- Detailed interior, exterior.
- Die-cast metal body and chassis,
- Dimensions approximately L-2.75 inches long.
Those figures describe the Mustang GTD, not the first-generation Ford GT, and should not be treated as a direct measure of which car is quicker in every setting. A fair numerical comparison would require verified first-gen data measured and reported on compatible terms.
How their engineering priorities differ
Mustang GTD: track-focused road-car hardware
Ford describes the GTD with active aerodynamics, carbon-ceramic brakes and inboard rear suspension with semi-active dampers, alongside its supercharged V8. Together, those features show the modern GTD’s emphasis on managing airflow, braking and suspension response in a high-performance road car. They do not, by themselves, establish how it compares with the 2005–2006 GT in weight, handling or everyday usability. Ford’s GTD engineering and product information outlines this equipment.

First-generation Ford GT: aluminum-alloy body
Ford’s historical account identifies the 2005 Ford GT’s lightweight aluminum-alloy body. That provides a concrete point of contrast in construction, but it is not enough to claim that the earlier car is lighter, or to rank the two cars’ overall engineering. Ford’s historical account of the GT program supplies this detail.
What the Nürburgring times do—and do not—show
Ford reports a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap of 6:40.835 for the Mustang GTD. This is Ford’s reported result for the GTD, not an independent test result or a verified time for the 2005–2006 Ford GT. Ford’s product page lists the GTD time.

Ford Racing’s 2026 coverage separately reports 6:49.337 for the Mustang GTD Competition. Ford describes the Competition as a distinct version with hardware updates and aggressive tuning, targeting output above the original GTD’s 815 horsepower. Do not swap its time with the standard GTD’s result or treat either time as a universal measure independent of track configuration, conditions, driver, tires and record rules. Ford Racing’s 2026 GTD Competition coverage distinguishes the two.
No directly comparable Nürburgring time for the 2005–2006 Ford GT is established by these sources. The GTD’s reported lap therefore cannot settle a lap-time contest between the two generations.

Why a full numerical head-to-head is not established
The available Ford sources do not provide a complete first-generation Ford GT specification sheet. Without period-correct figures and consistent conventions, a table comparing horsepower, torque, vehicle mass, acceleration or original price would imply more certainty than the evidence supports. In particular, figures for the 2017–2022 Ford GT would describe a different car, while resale value today would not be a substitute for original MSRP.
A rigorous numerical comparison would need first-gen figures tied to the 2005–2006 model, with the power-rating convention, curb-weight method, price basis and performance-test conditions identified. Until such values are verified, the sound comparison is qualitative: Ford documents the GTD’s current track-focused hardware and performance claims, while the historical source supports the first-generation car’s aluminum-alloy body as a construction detail.
