The Ford Mustang GTD combines a supercharged 5.2-liter Predator V8 with a rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle and a hydraulic active-aerodynamics system. Ford’s SAE-certified U.S. figures are 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. A dry-sump oil system is designed to keep the engine lubricated during sustained cornering, while the Drag Reduction System (DRS) changes the rear wing and front underbody flaps to trade aerodynamic drag for cornering downforce. Ford publishes the system’s purpose and major actions, but not its detailed control map or numerical downforce.

What makes the Mustang GTD’s layout different

The GTD is not simply a Mustang with a more powerful engine. Its powertrain and bodywork are arranged around the demands of sustained track driving: keeping oil supplied during high-load cornering, moving transmission mass toward the rear axle, and changing the car’s aerodynamic balance as speed and grip requirements change.

Ford identifies the engine as a supercharged 5.2-liter Predator V8. In its September 16, 2024 specification announcement, Ford listed 815 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque for the U.S. car. Those are manufacturer-published, SAE-certified figures, not results from an independent dynamometer test. The current Mustang GTD product page continues to identify the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 and available active aerodynamics.

Behind the engine, a carbon-fiber driveshaft sends power to a rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle. Putting the transaxle at the rear moves a large mass away from the front axle; Ford says the arrangement supports near 50/50 weight distribution. That is a layout description, not a claim that every production car has an exactly measured 50/50 split under every fuel and equipment condition.

At the bodywork level, Ford’s hydraulic DRS can alter the rear wing angle and operate flaps beneath the front of the car. The objective is to balance low drag for speed with more downforce for grip. Ford says that, in cornering conditions where grip is the priority, the main wing element and a front flap close together to form an integrated airfoil that adds downforce at the rear.

How the supercharged 5.2-liter Predator V8 produces its output

Supercharging and engine revisions

A supercharger forces additional air into the V8, allowing the engine to burn more fuel while maintaining the air-fuel ratio needed for combustion. More air and fuel per cycle can produce more torque and power than a naturally aspirated engine of similar displacement, although the compressor also adds heat and consumes some engine power.

Ford attributes the GTD’s output to a set of revisions rather than to displacement alone. The company specifically cites intake and exhaust changes and a smaller supercharger pulley. A smaller pulley drives the supercharger faster relative to engine speed, increasing the amount of air it can deliver. Intake and exhaust revisions help the engine move that larger air charge through the cylinders.

Ford lists a titanium Akrapovič exhaust on the current product information. That identifies the hardware supplied with the car; it does not by itself establish a separate horsepower gain or an independently measured sound level.

What the published numbers mean

The headline figures are 815 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Ford’s announcement identifies them as SAE-certified U.S. output figures. Certification defines the test and reporting basis, but it does not make the numbers independent performance testing. Wheel horsepower, acceleration times, and repeatability under different temperatures or fuel conditions are separate questions and are not supplied by the cited Ford material.

Ford’s Mustang GTD chief program engineer, Greg Goodall, described the engine this way: “GTD’s heart is its supercharged 5.2-liter V8, packing more horsepower per liter than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.” That is Ford’s attributed comparison based on the specifications it cites, not an independent ranking of the two cars.

Why the GTD uses a dry-sump oil system

Keeping oil available during sustained cornering

In a conventional wet-sump engine, oil collects in a pan below the crankshaft. Hard braking, acceleration, or cornering can make the oil move away from the pickup. If the pickup draws air instead of oil, oil pressure can fall and engine components can lose lubrication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A dry-sump system stores the oil in a separate reservoir and uses scavenge pumps to remove oil from the engine before returning it to that reservoir. The arrangement gives engineers more control over oil supply during prolonged lateral and longitudinal loads and can allow the engine to sit lower, although Ford’s published GTD material focuses on lubrication during demanding cornering rather than listing a specific installation height or pressure figure.

The 7,650-rpm limit

Ford says the dry-sump system helps enable a 7,650-rpm maximum engine speed. That figure appears in Ford’s 2024 announcement and is repeated in the company’s September 2026 update, “What’s New: Ford Mustang GTD.” It is an engine-speed limit, not a promise that the engine operates at that speed continuously or that a driver should hold it there outside the conditions specified in the owner’s documentation.

High engine speed can let an engine make power over a wider operating range, but it also increases mechanical loads and heat. The dry-sump system addresses oil-control risk; it does not eliminate the need for appropriate warm-up, fluid maintenance, or the service procedures Ford specifies for the vehicle.

How power reaches the rear transaxle

Carbon-fiber driveshaft

The engine is mounted at the front, while the eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle is mounted at the rear. A carbon-fiber driveshaft connects the two. The shaft’s material is part of the GTD’s specified hardware, but Ford’s cited sources do not publish a standalone rotational-inertia comparison with a metal shaft or a separate efficiency measurement.

Rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle

A dual-clutch transmission uses two clutches and two gear paths, allowing the next ratio to be selected before the current ratio is disengaged. That architecture can make shifts quick while still providing eight forward ratios. In the GTD, locating the transaxle at the rear also places transmission mass close to the rear axle.

Ford says this front-engine, rear-transaxle arrangement supports near 50/50 weight distribution. The engineering intent is straightforward: reducing the concentration of mass at the nose can help the front tires share cornering work more evenly with the rear tires. Actual balance changes with fuel load, options, tire condition, and measurement method, so “near 50/50” should be read as Ford’s design target or characterization rather than a universal measured value.

How the hydraulic active-aero system works

The two aerodynamic jobs

A car’s aerodynamic surfaces can be tuned for two competing outcomes:

  • Lower drag: less resistance helps the car accelerate and reach a higher speed on a straight.
  • More downforce: airflow is redirected to press the tires into the road, increasing the grip available for braking and cornering.

More of one usually costs some of the other. A large, steeply loaded wing can generate useful grip but also creates drag. A lower-drag configuration can improve straight-line speed while giving up some aerodynamic load in a corner.

Rear wing movement

Ford’s DRS is hydraulic and can change the angle of the rear wing. Changing the angle changes how strongly the wing turns airflow and therefore how much drag and downforce it produces. Ford does not publish the GTD’s wing-angle schedule, actuator timing, hydraulic pressure, or the exact vehicle-speed thresholds used by the production control system.

Front underbody flaps

The system also operates flaps under the front of the car. These flaps are not an isolated front spoiler adjustment: Ford describes the rear wing and front flap as working together to balance the airflow around the whole vehicle. Coordinating both ends helps avoid treating the rear axle and front axle as unrelated aerodynamic problems.

Cornering configuration

Ford says that when cornering grip is the priority, the main rear-wing element and a front flap close to create an integrated airfoil. In that configuration, the system adds downforce at the rear. The wording describes the aerodynamic result, not a driver-selectable menu mode; Ford’s public material does not establish that the driver manually chooses each wing or flap position.

Speed-focused operation

For conditions in which straight-line speed matters more, the DRS changes the surfaces to reduce the aerodynamic penalty. The exact positions and the transition logic are not public. It is therefore accurate to say that the system manages the drag-versus-downforce compromise, but not to claim a particular “open” angle, a fixed activation speed, or a measured top-speed gain without additional documentation.

How the engine, transaxle and aero work together on track

Exiting a corner

The supercharged V8 supplies torque for acceleration, while the rear transaxle sends that power through the rear drivetrain. As the car leaves a corner and transitions toward a straight, reducing aerodynamic drag can help the available engine power produce speed. Ford’s public descriptions establish that the DRS is intended to make this trade; they do not provide a control-map trace showing exactly when each surface moves.

Approaching and entering a corner

Under braking and turn-in, aerodynamic grip becomes more valuable than minimum drag. Ford says the DRS closes its main wing element and front flap to create the integrated airfoil that adds rear downforce. The rear transaxle’s location also keeps substantial drivetrain mass near the rear axle, while the dry-sump system is intended to keep the V8 supplied with oil through sustained loads.

Through a long, loaded bend

A long corner is the situation Ford specifically associates with the dry-sump system’s lubrication benefit. Oil control, chassis balance, tire loading, and aerodynamic load are separate engineering problems, but they interact: maintaining oil pressure protects the engine, while maintaining predictable aero load helps the tires generate repeatable grip. Ford has not published a numerical downforce curve showing how much load the GTD produces at any particular speed.

What Ford has not published about the active aero

The available Ford engineering descriptions explain the hardware’s purpose and the cornering action, but they do not provide:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Numerical downforce at a stated speed.
  • A drag coefficient for each DRS configuration.
  • Wing-angle or flap-angle schedules.
  • Actuator timing or hydraulic pressure data.
  • A measured straight-line speed difference between configurations.
  • A complete explanation of whether the driver can override the automatic behavior.

Those omissions matter because aerodynamic performance is highly dependent on ride height, yaw angle, steering angle, tire state, and track surface. Without a published test condition, a downforce number would not be comparable or verifiable. The safest description is the one Ford supports: the hydraulic system changes the rear wing and front flaps to balance drag against downforce, and its cornering configuration adds rear downforce.

How to read the GTD’s performance claims

Ford’s 815-hp, 664-lb-ft, 7,650-rpm, and 202-mph figures are useful specifications, but each has a defined scope. The output numbers are SAE-certified U.S. ratings; the rpm figure is a stated engine limit; and the top speed is a Ford-published vehicle specification. None is an independent road or track test.

Ford’s detailed aero article, “Mustang GTD Has an Aerodynamic Advantage Most Race Cars Don’t to Go Faster on the Track,” explains the DRS concept, while the 2024 powertrain announcement, “Mustang GTD is the Fastest, Most Powerful Production Mustang in History,” supplies the headline engine figures. Ford’s Mustang GTD FAQs and product page provide current model information. These sources establish the architecture and claimed specifications; they do not substitute for independently measured acceleration, lap times, or aerodynamic loads.
