The first-generation Lexus LS 400 helped establish Lexus as a serious U.S. luxury-car contender when it launched in 1989. Lexus says the brand had become America’s best-selling luxury import marque by 1991, but that company-reported milestone does not mean one car reshaped every luxury market worldwide. A surviving LS 400 could still serve as a daily driver, but only if the specific car is sound, maintained and affordable to keep on the road.
Why the LS 400 mattered
The LS 400 was the flagship sedan that launched Lexus in the United States. It premiered at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 1989 and went on sale that September. Toyota’s May 15, 1989 production announcement had planned a nationwide U.S. launch for September 1, with about 65 dealers.
Toyota positioned the new four-door luxury sedan directly against BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The company announced a 4-liter V8 rated at 250 horsepower; Lexus’s retrospective describes the original as rear-wheel drive. Those details describe the launch-era car, and specifications can differ by year and market.
Lexus says that by 1991 it had outsold Mercedes-Benz and BMW to become the best-selling luxury import brand in the United States. That is a significant marker of the LS 400’s role in Lexus’s American entry, though it is a Lexus-reported figure—not evidence that one model alone transformed luxury-car sales everywhere. Toyota’s launch announcement called the LS 400 the first Toyota automobile designed to compete directly with European names including BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

What made the launch car stand out
A substantial development program
Lexus’s accounts describe an unusually large effort behind the car. The company reports six years of development involving 1,400 engineers, 2,300 technicians and about 450 prototypes. These are manufacturer-reported figures, not independently audited totals.
A 2012 Lexus press kit gives the original LS 400 a drag coefficient of 0.29 and links the car’s quiet, comfortable cabin to attention to noise, vibration and harshness. Toyota said at launch that new LS 400s would be tested at speeds up to 100 mph on a Japanese factory track, then receive another U.S. inspection and test drive before dealer delivery. Those descriptions document the company’s development and delivery process as announced; they do not establish the condition or durability of any individual car today.

Design shaped around its intended buyer
Lexus’s design retrospective dates approval of the original F1 styling to May 1987. It says the team used 14 full-size models over 16 months and conducted dozens of wind-tunnel tests. The company compared that process with about six full-size models for a typical new car. Lexus also reports that its own American-customer research ranked prestigious image first and performance fourth among premium-car priorities; that is the automaker’s account of its research, not an independent survey result.
Can you still daily-drive an LS 400?
Possibly—but the answer depends on the individual car, not the nameplate’s reputation. The available historical evidence does not establish present-day reliability, the condition of surviving examples or their running costs. A decades-old sedan may be a usable commuter if it has been properly maintained and passes a careful inspection; no blanket promise applies to every LS 400.

Before treating one as a commuter
- Review its history. Ask for maintenance records and check that the work matches the car’s year and market specification. Lexus service material directs owners to the relevant owner’s manual for maintenance items due by time and mileage.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the specific vehicle, including mechanical condition and corrosion. A brand reputation is not a substitute for seeing the car on a lift and checking its records.
- Check recalls by vehicle. For a U.S. car, use the NHTSA recall lookup with its VIN or license plate. A general year, make and model search can show recall information, but it cannot determine the open-recall status of one particular vehicle.
- Work out whether ownership fits your needs. Check parts availability where you live, registration rules, fuel use, insurance and the repair budget for that example. The sources here do not provide current parts-stock information, local costs or a comparison with modern crash protection.
If you are researching repairs yourself, look for a manual that explicitly covers the exact LS 400 year and market. A model name alone does not guarantee that a book covers the relevant specification, and a repair manual is not a substitute for professional inspection or official service information.

Lexus’s 2012 press kit said more than 730,000 LS models had been sold since 1989 and that a majority remained on the road at the time of publication. That is a historical company statement, not a current count of surviving LS 400s or proof that a particular one is dependable. Lexus Europe also reports almost 3,000 LS 400s sold in the first month after launch, but its history passage does not specify the market for that figure.

- Accessories and collections: This product is very suitable for static accessories and can be used as an accessory next to a computer. For those who are passionate about collecting model car models, this is a great art collection.
The evidence makes a strong case for the LS 400 as a consequential launch car in the United States: it brought Lexus into direct competition with established European luxury marques, and Lexus says its sales milestone followed by 1991. It does not establish current used-car prices, fuel economy, independent reliability statistics for surviving examples or modern crash-test performance. A daily-driver decision therefore has to be made vehicle by vehicle.
