For 2026, FIA Formula 3 drivers receive Super Licence points from their final annual championship position, not by adding up their individual race points. The F3 champion is allocated 30 Super Licence points, while the normal full-Super-Licence route requires 40 points within the applicable calendar-year window. Winning F3 is therefore a major step toward an F1 licence, but it does not by itself complete the points requirement or the other eligibility tests.
What earns a Formula 3 driver Super Licence points?
The FIA separates two scoring systems that are easy to confuse. Formula 3 races produce ordinary championship points. Those points decide the F3 championship table. After the season ends, the FIA awards a separate Super Licence allocation according to the driver’s final overall position in that annual championship.

How F3 race scoring leads to the final position
The 2026 Formula 3 Sporting Regulations determine the championship order. They award ordinary race points separately in each event and then total those results over the season.
Sprint Race points
Under the ordinary 2026 scale, a Sprint Race winner receives 10 championship points. The remaining classified positions receive the amounts set out in the Sporting Regulations. These are F3 championship points only; they are not 10 Super Licence points.

Pole and fastest lap
The 2026 rules add two championship points for Feature Race pole. One additional point is available for the eligible fastest lap in each race, but only when the driver is classified in the top 10. The fastest-lap point is not awarded if the leader completes less than 50% of the scheduled distance.
Shortened races
When a race is shortened, the regulations apply reduced championship-point scales tied to the distance completed. That changes the ordinary F3 totals and can affect the final championship order. It does not create a separate reduced or enhanced Super Licence table: the eventual annual position is matched to the allocation in Appendix L.
How the 40-point requirement works
The ordinary full FIA Super Licence route requires at least 40 eligible points. The FIA does not describe this as a simple rolling 36-month total. Instead, it compares two calendar-year windows and uses whichever produces the higher total.
Recommended Free Tools
| Window considered | Years included | How it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Three-year window | The three calendar years immediately before the application year | Total eligible points from those three years |
| Two-years-plus-application window | The two calendar years immediately before the application year plus the application year itself | Total eligible points from those three calendar years |
The higher of those two totals is the one relevant to the ordinary points test. The FIA lists eligible series and championship positions in Supplement 1, so a driver’s calculation must include only results recognized there and must use the points attached to the appropriate final positions.

What an F3 title contributes
A 2026 F3 champion contributes 30 points to the calculation. That leaves a 10-point shortfall against the usual 40-point threshold, meaning the driver needs eligible results from another championship or another season inside the chosen window. Second place contributes 25, and third contributes 20, so those finishes also require additional eligible results.
The arithmetic does not mean every driver needs exactly one other championship. A driver can combine several eligible results across the permitted years, provided the points are valid for the same application calculation and the FIA accepts the underlying championships and positions.
Does winning Formula 3 qualify a driver for Formula 1?
No. Winning F3 supplies 30 points under the 2026 allocation, but the normal full-Super-Licence route calls for 40. The points test is also only one part of a first-time application.
A title-winning driver must still satisfy the participation, licence-grade and age requirements, or qualify through an alternative provision in Appendix L. The FIA makes the licensing decision under the regulations applicable to the application; the F3 title itself is not an automatic F1 entry credential.

Additional conditions for a first full Super Licence
Two substantially completed seasons
A first-time applicant must have completed at least 80% of each of two full seasons in eligible single-seater championships. The requirement concerns participation in each season, not merely the number of Super Licence points earned. A driver can therefore have enough points on paper and still fail this separate condition if the season-completion test is not met.
International Grade A licence
The applicant must hold a current FIA International Grade A licence. This is a separate licence-grade requirement and cannot be replaced by a high F3 finishing position.
Minimum age
The ordinary minimum age is 18 at the start of the driver’s first Formula 1 event. The FIA may grant a licence at 17 when it considers that the driver has recently and consistently demonstrated exceptional ability and maturity in single-seater formula-car competition. That is a discretionary exception, not an automatic age reduction for every F3 champion.
Other regulatory routes
Appendix L also contains alternatives for drivers with prior Super Licence status and provisions addressing specified force-majeure circumstances. Some alternatives involve additional F1 testing and remain subject to FIA discretion. Consequently, the 40-point route should be treated as the normal path rather than a statement that every possible applicant must qualify in exactly the same way.

Worked calculations for common F3 outcomes
| F3 result | F3 Super Licence allocation | Additional points needed to reach 40 |
|---|---|---|
| Champion | 30 | 10 |
| Second | 25 | 15 |
| Third | 20 | 20 |
| Fourth | 15 | 25 |
| Fifth | 12 | 28 |
| Sixth | 9 | 31 |
| Seventh | 7 | 33 |
| Eighth | 5 | 35 |
| Ninth | 3 | 37 |
| Tenth | 2 | 38 |
The final column is arithmetic against the ordinary 40-point threshold. It is not an additional FIA allocation. For example, a 2026 F3 champion needs at least 10 more eligible points in the selected window, while a driver finishing fifth needs 28 more. Whether a particular result supplies those points depends on the other championship’s position and on the eligibility table in the applicable FIA supplement.
How to calculate a driver’s points before applying
- Identify the application year. The year determines which calendar-year windows must be compared.
- Record final championship positions. Use the final annual positions from F3 and every other potentially eligible championship; do not copy individual race totals into the Super Licence calculation.
- Match each result to the applicable FIA table. Check the Supplement 1 allocation for the year in which that championship was completed and use only series recognized by the regulations.
- Build both calendar-year totals. Add eligible points in the three years before the application, then separately add the two previous years plus the application year.
- Keep the higher total. That is the total used for the ordinary 40-point test.
- Check non-points conditions. Confirm 80% completion in each of two full seasons, a current International Grade A licence and the age rule, then review any applicable alternative provision.
- Verify the current regulations. The FIA can revise tables and wording between editions, so a calculation for a later season should not assume that the 2026 values remain unchanged.
How long do FIA Super Licence points last?
The rules use defined calendar-year windows rather than an open-ended balance that remains available forever. For an application in a given year, the FIA compares the three immediately preceding calendar years with the two preceding years plus the application year. A result can therefore fall out of one calculation as the application year changes, while the alternative window may still include a different combination of seasons.
This is why describing the system as “points lasting three years” is incomplete. The relevant question is which of the two regulatory windows gives the higher eligible total for the specific application year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon mistakes when reading the F3 table
- Counting race wins as licence points. A Sprint victory’s ordinary championship value and a Feature Race victory’s ordinary value help determine the standings; neither is automatically the same number of Super Licence points.
- Assuming the champion has 40 points. The 2026 champion’s allocation is 30, so another eligible result is normally required.
- Using a rolling 36-month calculation. The FIA specifies two calendar-year windows, not a day-by-day period.
- Ignoring shortened-race rules. Reduced race scales can change the F3 standings even though they do not alter the separate annual-position allocation.
- Treating points as the complete licence test. Season participation, licence grade, age and regulatory alternatives still matter.
- Applying 2026 values to another season without checking. The published allocation is tied to the relevant regulatory year and may be amended in a later supplement.
Which FIA documents control the answer?
The primary authority for the threshold, calendar windows, eligibility conditions and annual allocations is the FIA Appendix L to the International Sporting Code — 2026, published 23 June 2026. Article 13 covers the full Super Licence, and Supplement 1 contains the points table.
The distinction between F3 race scoring and Super Licence credit comes from the FIA 2026 Formula 3 Sporting Regulations, Version 2, published 23 February 2026. Article 6 covers Sprint and Feature Race scoring, pole and fastest-lap points, and reduced scales for shortened races.
Those documents should be checked together: the Sporting Regulations establish the final F3 championship order, while Appendix L converts that annual position into Super Licence credit and sets the licensing conditions.
Practical takeaway for an F3 driver
Start with the final championship position, not the race-point total. For a 2026 F3 driver, the table gives between 2 and 30 Super Licence points for positions 10th through first. Then compare both FIA calendar-year windows, add eligible results from other championships, and test the 40-point total. Finally, confirm the two-season participation rule, Grade A licence and age requirement. Only after all of those checks can a driver know whether an F3 season has produced a viable full-Super-Licence application.
