Those labels establish timing and model names, not final range, power, acceleration, charging time, weight or price.
The comparison is therefore about role, availability and powertrain today. Combustion-engined 718 production ended in October 2025. The 911 remains an active family with Carrera, T, S, GTS, Targa, Turbo and GT3 derivatives, including the hybrid Carrera GTS. Until Porsche publishes a production specification for a particular electric 718 and a particular 911 trim, claims that one is faster, cheaper or more capable are speculation.

What the electric Porsche 718 is, and where it stands now
Porsche is using the 718 name for two announced fully electric sports cars: the Boxster roadster and the Cayman coupe. They are the planned successors to the combustion 718 range, rather than additional electric versions of an unchanged petrol car.

The timing needs careful interpretation. Porsche’s international model overview labels an electric 718 Boxster as a 2027 model. A model-year entry does not guarantee that customer cars will be delivered in every country during calendar 2027, nor does it reveal the final equipment or performance. Separately, Porsche’s 2035 strategy says, “The first full year of production of the all-electric 718 Boxster and Cayman models is expected to support sales from 2028.” That is the company’s outlook, not a guaranteed worldwide launch date.

What happened to the combustion 718
Porsche says production of the combustion-engined 718 ended in October 2025. Cars handed over after that month can still be new to their owners, but those handovers are remaining inventory or cars already in the delivery process; they are not evidence that Porsche continued manufacturing the petrol 718.

How the 718 and 911 occupy different places in Porsche’s range
The electric 718 will continue a two-model structure: Boxster for an open-top roadster format and Cayman for a fixed-roof coupe format. Porsche’s announcement establishes those names, but it does not provide a complete production body specification for either electric car.
The 911 is not one fixed car against which every 718 can be scored. Porsche’s U.S. range lists Carrera, T, S, GTS, Targa, Turbo and GT3 derivatives. A meaningful comparison must identify the exact 911, because equipment, drivetrain and intended use vary across those names. Saying “the 911” without a trim can make an acceleration, price or power claim misleading.

Powertrain: electric 718 versus the 911’s varied lineup
The 718 is planned as a fully electric line
Porsche describes the next Boxster and Cayman as all-electric models. That gives the 718 comparison a clear direction: the successor will use an electric powertrain rather than the combustion engines used by the discontinued 718 generation. Porsche has not, in the cited material, published the production battery capacity, motor arrangement, peak output, charging curve or driving range.

The 911 is not simply “petrol” or “electric”
Powertrain descriptions have to follow the trim. Porsche’s 911 press-kit summary calls the new 911 Carrera GTS “the first road-approved 911 equipped with a super-lightweight performance hybrid system.” Therefore, the Carrera GTS is a hybrid, not a conventional petrol-only comparison point. Other 911 derivatives have their own specifications, and the sources used here do not establish a fully electric 911 model.
If your question is “Is the Porsche 911 electric?”, the accurate answer is that Porsche’s current 911 range is not presented as an all-electric family. It includes a hybrid Carrera GTS alongside other named derivatives. Check the specification for the exact 911 you are considering rather than inferring its powertrain from the 911 badge.
Is the electric Porsche 718 faster than a 911?
There is no defensible yes-or-no answer yet. Porsche has not supplied a final electric 718 performance sheet in the official sources cited for this comparison, and no independent instrumented test is available here. Without production figures for power, torque, weight and acceleration, placing the EV above or below a 911 Carrera, Carrera GTS, Turbo or GT3 would invent precision.

A standing-start time, rolling acceleration, top speed, lap time and repeatability under battery-temperature limits can produce different winners. The 911 trim, optional equipment, tires, test market and model year would also need to be named.

The numbers that must be checked when specifications arrive
- Acceleration: use Porsche’s stated test method and whether a launch-control or optional package is required.
- Power and torque: distinguish peak system output from a short-duration overboost figure.
- Weight: compare cars in the same equipment specification; battery and option weights can materially change results.
- Top speed: treat it separately from acceleration and check whether it is electronically limited.
- Range and repeat performance: an electric car’s available output can depend on battery state of charge and temperature.
Until those data are published for a named electric 718 and a named 911, the fair conclusion is “not established,” not that one model is slower.
Availability and buying choices in 2026
If you want a 718 now
You cannot order a new combustion 718 on the assumption that production is ongoing: Porsche ended that production in October 2025. Remaining new cars may still be delivered, depending on country and dealer inventory, and used examples will remain available. Their status should be verified by vehicle identification number and build documentation rather than by a late delivery date.
If you want the future electric 718
Use Porsche’s 2027 model listing as an indication that the Boxster name is planned for that model year, not as a promise of a specific handover date. The company expects the first full production year of electric Boxster and Cayman sales to contribute from 2028. Market launch schedules, ordering windows and final prices were not established in the cited material.
If you want a current 911
The 911 is the established, currently active choice. Select the derivative first—Carrera, T, S, GTS, Targa, Turbo or GT3—then compare its published specification, equipment and price for your country. A 911 Carrera GTS should not be represented as interchangeable with a Turbo or GT3, and its hybrid system should be included in any powertrain description.

What Porsche’s delivery figures say—and what they do not
Company delivery data show the transition’s commercial context, but they are not production totals or a measure of which car is objectively better.

The first-half 2026 718 figure includes the effects of a discontinued combustion line and remaining handovers; it is not a forecast for electric 718 demand. The 911 figures cover a broad family, so they cannot be used to compare a particular 911 trim with an electric Boxster or Cayman.

Choose the electric 718 when the priority is the new electric sports-car format
The announced Boxster and Cayman are the relevant options if you want Porsche’s next fully electric two-seat sports-car line and can wait for market availability. Decide between the roadster and coupe name before comparing equipment. Keep the purchase decision provisional until Porsche releases final range, charging, performance, weight and pricing for your market.
Choose a remaining or used combustion 718 when the priority is the outgoing format
A late-production or used petrol Boxster or Cayman is a different proposition from the electric successor. Its appeal is immediate availability and the established combustion specification, but production has ended, so condition, warranty, service history and remaining inventory matter more than a new-car ordering assumption.

Choose a 911 when you need an active, specified model family now
The 911 offers a current range from which you can select a precise body and trim. Buyers interested in electrification should identify the Carrera GTS and its hybrid system specifically; buyers seeking another balance of performance or body style should evaluate the corresponding Carrera, T, S, Targa, Turbo or GT3 specification.
A practical checklist before comparing prices or performance
- Write down the exact models: electric 718 Boxster or Cayman, plus the 911 derivative and model year.
- Confirm your market. Porsche’s model-year labels and U.S. range listings do not automatically establish equipment or delivery timing elsewhere.
- Check whether the 718 information is a confirmed production specification or only a model-year and strategy announcement.
- Compare like-for-like data: the same acceleration method, equipment level, tires, and performance option status.
- Separate company delivery counts from production, dealer stock and demand forecasts.
- For a combustion 718, verify that the vehicle was built before production ended in October 2025 and document its remaining warranty and service support.
- For a future electric 718, wait for Porsche’s official price, range, charging and performance figures before placing a value judgment against a 911.
The bottom line on electric 718 versus 911
The electric 718 and the 911 are not yet a normal specification-to-specification contest. Porsche has announced an all-electric Boxster and Cayman successor line, with a 2027 model listing and an expectation that its first full production year will support sales from 2028. The combustion 718 ended production in October 2025. The 911, by contrast, is a current multi-variant family that includes the hybrid Carrera GTS and several other named derivatives.
Today, choose based on timing and format: a current, precisely specified 911; a remaining or used combustion 718; or a future electric Boxster or Cayman whose decisive numbers have not yet been published. Any claim that the electric 718 is faster, has greater range or costs less than a 911 should wait for Porsche’s final production data and a comparison with a named 911 trim.
