BMW did not establish a verified, current “world’s quickest muscle sedan” record with the M5. What it did produce was an unusually fast four-door that fits the muscle-sedan idea from two very different eras: the E39 M5 paired a naturally aspirated V8 with a manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive, while the current U.S.-market M5 uses plug-in-hybrid power, all-wheel drive and 717 horsepower. The figures are impressive, but they are not directly interchangeable, and “quickest” has no meaning until you specify the model year, market, acceleration metric and test method.
What “world’s quickest muscle sedan” can—and cannot—mean
“Muscle sedan” is a useful description, not a formal racing class. It usually suggests a relatively discreet four-door body, a large or forceful engine, strong straight-line acceleration and enough everyday practicality to separate the car from a two-seat sports car. The BMW M5 has embodied that formula repeatedly, even as its technology changed.

The phrase “world’s quickest” is harder to defend. A manufacturer’s 0–60 mph claim is not the same comparison as an independent quarter-mile test. A 0–62 mph time is another metric again, and top speed measures a different capability altogether. BMW’s own historical material reports both 0–60 and 0–62 mph for the E39 M5, so those numbers must remain labeled rather than blended into one supposedly exact result.
BMW’s history release describes the earlier E28 M5 as the fastest production sedan of its time. That is a time-bounded historical statement, not evidence that the E39 or today’s M5 holds a universal global record. The responsible conclusion is narrower: the M5 is one of the clearest examples of a high-performance sedan that can be read as muscle-car thinking translated into a four-door BMW.

The E39 M5: the classic muscle-sedan interpretation
V8 power with a manual and rear drive
BMW identifies the E39 as the first M5 powered by a V8. Its naturally aspirated 5.0-liter engine was rated at 394 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 368 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm. A six-speed manual transmission sent that output to the rear wheels. Those ingredients explain why enthusiasts often place the E39 at the center of the M5’s muscle-sedan story: a large-displacement engine, a conventional gearbox and rear-drive behavior in a restrained four-door shell.
BMW M engineer Wolfgang Kreinhoefner described the engine objective this way: “Above all, we wanted to create an abundant torque curve.” That goal matters more than a peak-horsepower headline for a road car. Broad torque gives the sedan urgency in normal traffic and lets the driver choose a higher gear without making every acceleration run a full-throttle exercise. The V8’s response is also linear compared with a modern turbo-hybrid system, which is one reason the E39’s character remains distinct even when newer M5s are much quicker on paper.
Two BMW acceleration figures, two different tests
BMW’s 1998-history page gives the E39 M5 a 0–62 mph time of 5.3 seconds. A separate BMW anniversary release reports 0–60 mph in 4.8 seconds. The two figures should not be treated as contradictory proof of one precise result: they use different terminal speeds and come from different BMW publications. A 0–62 mph run requires the car to accelerate 2 mph farther, while launch conditions, test procedure and publication context can also affect the result.

BMW says 20,482 E39 M5s were produced. That production total helps explain the model’s influence: it was not a one-off engineering exercise, but a series-production sedan built in meaningful numbers while retaining a specification that now feels unusual—naturally aspirated V8 power, a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive.

Why the E39 looks like a muscle car without the costume
The E39’s visual restraint is central to its appeal. It does not need exaggerated wings or a racing-derived body kit to communicate performance. The ordinary-looking four-door proportions conceal a high-output V8 and a chassis engineered for serious speed. That mismatch between appearance and capability is a defining muscle-sedan trait: the car can function as transport while carrying the hardware of a much more conspicuous performance machine.
Calling the E39 “accidental” should therefore be understood as a description of its cultural position, not a claim that BMW stumbled into the result. BMW deliberately engineered the engine, driveline and chassis. The accidental part is that a sober executive sedan became an enduring reference point for fast four-doors, including cars whose hybrid systems and all-wheel-drive launches now make them dramatically quicker.
The current M5: speed through hybrid assistance and traction
What BMW’s U.S. technical page claims
BMW’s current U.S. M5 Sedan technical page lists a plug-in-hybrid system producing 717 hp and 738 lb-ft. It uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, with BMW stating 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds. BMW labels the acceleration figure preliminary BMW AG test data and warns that actual results vary with vehicle specification, environmental conditions, test procedure and driving style.

Electric assistance can deliver torque immediately, while all-wheel drive can distribute launch force to four tires instead of asking two rear tires to manage the entire effort. The automatic transmission also performs repeatable, rapid shifts without requiring the driver to coordinate a clutch and gear lever. Those choices explain how a heavier, more complex modern M5 can cut the claimed 0–60 time to 3.4 seconds despite no longer using the E39’s naturally aspirated V8/manual/rear-drive formula.

Why the number is not a universal ranking
The 3.4-second figure is a BMW claim for the current U.S. model, not an independently verified cross-brand leaderboard. It also applies to a specific market and model presentation. Other countries can receive different equipment, calibration or certification figures, and future model years can change specifications. Use the number to describe BMW’s stated capability, not to announce that the M5 is definitively the fastest sedan on Earth.
How to compare “quickest” without misleading yourself
1. Identify the exact car
Write down the generation or model year and the market. “M5” can mean the E39, E60, F10, F90 or the current G90-era sedan, and those cars differ in engines, transmissions, drive systems and testing standards. A U.S.-market technical page should not automatically be presented as a worldwide specification.
2. Name the acceleration metric
- 0–60 mph: the familiar U.S. benchmark used on BMW’s current M5 page.
- 0–62 mph: approximately 100 km/h, used in BMW’s E39 history material.
- Quarter mile: a longer test that includes launch, gear changes, traction and power at speed.
- Top speed: a measure of maximum velocity, not launch performance.
3. Separate claimed and independently measured results
A manufacturer’s number is useful for comparing the maker’s own specifications, but independent instrumented tests can produce different outcomes because of temperature, surface, tire condition, fuel load, rollout conventions and driver technique. Do not put a claimed 0–60 time beside an independently timed quarter-mile result and call the comparison complete.
4. Account for the power-delivery system
Engine displacement alone does not explain modern acceleration. Hybrid motors, battery state of charge, launch-control programming, turbocharging, transmission logic and all-wheel-drive traction can matter as much as peak horsepower. The E39’s appeal comes from how its power arrives through a manual rear-drive layout; the current M5’s claimed launch advantage comes from electrified torque, automatic shifts and four driven wheels.

Which BMW M car is fastest?
BMW’s U.S. M-models page lists three vehicles tied at a claimed 3.4 seconds from 0–60 mph: the M3 Competition xDrive Sedan, M4 Competition xDrive Coupe and M5 Sedan. That answer is specific to BMW’s listed U.S. lineup and the company’s stated metric. It does not establish a tie in quarter-mile performance, top speed or independent testing, and it does not make the current M5 a universal record holder.
The M5 remains notable because it delivers that figure in a full-size sedan while retaining four-door practicality. The M3 and M4 occupy different size and body-style categories, so a buyer deciding among them should not reduce the choice to one acceleration number.
What the M5 story says about muscle sedans
It preserves the sleeper idea
Both the E39 and the current M5 can look relatively conventional beside purpose-built supercars. Their performance is integrated into a sedan body rather than advertised through exotic proportions. That makes the M5 a natural example of the sleeper tradition even when its technology is no longer simple.

It shows how the definition changed
The E39’s formula is mechanical and transparent: V8, manual, rear drive. The current car reaches a much faster claimed 0–60 time through hybrid assistance, an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Calling both cars “muscle sedans” describes their role and attitude, not identical driving experiences.

It puts speed in context
Acceleration is only one part of a performance sedan’s identity. A manual gearbox changes driver involvement; rear drive changes how the car responds at the limit; hybrid hardware changes weight, packaging and energy management. A newer M5 can be quicker in a launch test while an E39 can remain more appealing to someone seeking a naturally aspirated engine and direct mechanical interaction.
Bottom line: an exceptional sedan, not a proven world record
The strongest evidence supports a precise conclusion. The E39 M5 was an unusually understated V8 muscle sedan, with 394 hp, a six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive and BMW-published acceleration of 5.3 seconds to 62 mph (with a separate BMW release citing 4.8 seconds to 60 mph). The current U.S. M5 is a very different machine: a 717-hp plug-in hybrid with 738 lb-ft, an eight-speed automatic, all-wheel drive and a preliminary BMW-claimed 3.4-second 0–60 time.
Those facts explain why the M5 can be called one of the world’s most compelling muscle sedans, but they do not prove an unqualified “world’s quickest” title. To make that claim honestly, you would need a defined rival set, matching model years and markets, the same acceleration metric and comparable test methods.
