How the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV Went 1,059 Miles on One Charge

GM reports that a 2026 Silverado EV Max Range WT covered 1,059.2 miles on one charge under carefully optimized test conditions—well beyond its 493-mile EPA estimate.

General Motors says a production 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV Max Range Work Truck traveled 1,059.2 miles on a single full charge during a weeklong engineering test on public roads in Michigan. That is a test result, not the truck’s normal-use range: GM lists the WT Max Range’s EPA-estimated range at up to 493 miles.

What the 1,059-mile record means

GM announced the result on August 5, 2025, describing it as a world record for an electric vehicle. The company compared the run with a 749-mile record it attributed to Lucid earlier in 2025. Both the result and the comparison come from GM’s accounts; the available sources do not establish an independent record-adjudication process. GM’s record announcement identifies the vehicle as a 2026 Silverado EV Max Range Work Truck.

The important distinction is between the distance achieved in this specially managed test and the EPA-estimated range for the configuration. GM gives the tested WT Max Range an EPA-estimated range of up to 493 miles. The 1,059.2-mile figure is not an EPA rating or a promise of what owners should expect on an ordinary drive. GM notes that actual range varies with factors including temperature, terrain, battery age and condition, loading, use and maintenance.

How the test truck covered so much ground

GM says the test took place on public roads in southeastern Michigan, with the final stretch on Detroit’s Belle Isle. Thirty-five GM employees took one-hour shifts over the course of a week. The team had set a 1,000-mile target after discussing the challenge in late 2024. Its behind-the-scenes account describes a deliberate effort to minimize energy use while keeping the truck’s hardware and software unchanged. GM’s account of the test says the changes and settings stayed within the owner’s manual limits.

Low speed and gentle driving

GM reports that the most efficient cruising speed observed during the test was 20–25 mph. Drivers aimed for that pace when it was safe, accelerated gently and avoided hard braking. Most of the time, the truck carried no passengers. A week of slow, carefully managed public-road driving is very different from the speeds and stop-and-go conditions typical of daily use.

Reducing drag, rolling resistance and weight

The team used an accessory tonneau cover to smooth airflow, positioned the windshield wipers at their lowest acceptable setting, inflated the tires to the highest acceptable pressure, optimized wheel alignment and removed the spare tire to reduce mass. It also turned off climate control and conducted the test in summer temperatures. These are descriptions of GM’s test setup, not a recommendation to exceed tire-pressure limits, compromise visibility or switch off safety equipment in everyday driving.

How 2026 Silverado EV range varies by configuration

There is no single range figure for every 2026 Silverado EV. GM’s May 21, 2025 lineup announcement distinguishes battery pack, trim and estimate type. WT figures are EPA-estimated; the Max Range figures listed for LT and Trail Boss are GM-estimated rather than EPA-estimated.

2026 trim Battery configuration Published range estimate Estimate type
WT Standard battery 286 miles EPA-estimated
WT Extended battery 424 miles EPA-estimated
WT Max Range battery 493 miles EPA-estimated
LT Standard battery 283 miles EPA-estimated
LT Extended battery 410 miles EPA-estimated
LT Max Range battery 478 miles GM-estimated
Trail Boss Extended battery 410 miles EPA-estimated
Trail Boss Max Range battery 478 miles GM-estimated

These figures are from GM’s 2026 Silverado EV lineup announcement. Chevrolet’s current US product page advertises up to 478 miles of GM-estimated range for certain 2026 configurations. That does not conflict with the WT Max Range’s 493-mile EPA estimate: the figures refer to different configurations and estimate types. Check the specific vehicle’s configuration and current listing rather than treating either number as universal. Chevrolet’s Silverado EV page also describes available 350 kW DC fast charging and a GM-estimated 120 miles of range in 10 minutes under the conditions stated by Chevrolet; those are manufacturer claims and vary by configuration.

What owners should take from the result

The record shows what GM achieved by combining a long-range configuration with unusually favorable speed, weather and vehicle settings. It does not show that a driver can expect to double the truck’s rated range in ordinary traffic. Road speed, temperature, terrain, load, climate-control use and other conditions affect an EV’s energy consumption, so the configuration’s applicable rated estimate is a more useful starting point for trip planning than this record run.

For the test itself, GM’s account is the available basis for the distance, route and setup; it does not provide independent verification of the record. The company quotes battery, propulsion and sustainability vice president Kurt Kelty saying, “Getting this kind of range on a full charge doesn’t happen by accident.” That is a statement from GM’s manufacturer-published account, not independent commentary.
