How the nine picks are selected
The first five are new 2025 models with reported starting prices in the stated band. That coverage set a below-$25,000 threshold for its 2026 selection; it does not establish that every example below can be found today at that price. Used-car asking prices and availability vary by location, mileage, condition, and history.
The five historical 2025 starting prices were reported by Edmunds in an article hosted by AP News. They are useful for comparing original model-year positioning, not for predicting today’s dealer quote. Taxes, fees, options, inventory, and vehicle condition all affect what a buyer pays.

1. Mazda MX-5 Miata: a light, open-air two-seater
The Miata is the clearest choice here if you want a convertible roadster rather than a practical daily-driver shape. Mazda lists a 181-horsepower 2.0-liter engine for the 2025 car. Transmission availability depends on trim, so check the configuration rather than assuming every version offers an automatic. Its two-seat layout also makes the trade-off plain: this is a car for people and a modest amount of luggage, not a substitute for a family car.
2. Toyota GR86: the coupe alternative to the Miata
The GR86 gives shoppers a fixed-roof, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe instead of the Miata’s open-top, two-seat format. Edmunds’ comparison describes the GR86 and BRZ as sharing a rear-drive, 228-horsepower foundation. Compare the exact trim, local quote, and dealer access; the evidence here does not establish one as universally cheaper or easier to buy.
3. Subaru BRZ: a focused rear-drive coupe
Subaru describes the 2025 BRZ as a rear-wheel-drive two-door powered by a 228-horsepower 2.4-liter engine. The tS trim adds STI-tuned suspension. That makes trim selection relevant if suspension tuning is part of the appeal; check the equipment and price of the specific car rather than treating the tS detail as standard across the range.

4. Ford Mustang coupe: a different kind of sports-car choice
The Mustang’s reported 2025 starting price places it near the top of this group. The figure is for the coupe starting point, not every engine or trim. For a meaningful comparison, decide which Mustang powertrain and equipment level you are considering, then compare that car’s actual local price with the lighter, smaller choices above. 5. Volkswagen GTI: performance with hatchback utility
The GTI is the practical-shape outlier: a front-wheel-drive performance hatchback rather than a roadster or coupe. Edmunds reports 241 horsepower for the 2025 model. Its hatchback format is the reason to consider it if everyday utility matters alongside performance; body style and drivetrain are key differences from the rear-drive coupes and Miata.
Four used-car routes for a tighter budget
Edmunds’ June 10, 2026 used-performance-car selection used a below-$25,000 price threshold and included relevant model lines such as the Miata, BRZ/86, GTI, and BMW 2 Series. That is a selection threshold, not a guarantee that any specific car is available for less than $25,000 now. Use the model names as a starting point for local searches, then judge the individual car.

6. Used Mazda Miata
Earlier Miatas can put the roadster format within reach of a lower budget. The key question is not simply the model year: inspect the car’s condition, maintenance records, accident history, and how it has been used. A clean, well-documented example is a more meaningful comparison than a cheaper car with unresolved wear or repair needs.
7. Used Subaru BRZ
A used BRZ is a route to the rear-drive coupe experience without buying a 2025 model. Compare mileage, service documentation, modifications, and condition; previous owners’ changes can matter as much as the badge. Edmunds’ selection supports considering used BRZ examples, but it does not establish a current price for a particular year or condition.

8. Used Toyota 86 or GR86
Edmunds’ used-car coverage also points shoppers toward 86/GR86 generations. Treat the exact generation and car as the unit of comparison: confirm equipment, service history, title status, and inspection results. The shared foundation with the BRZ makes both worth checking when local inventory or pricing differs, rather than limiting the search to one badge.
9. Used Volkswagen GTI or BMW 2 Series
A used GTI preserves the hatchback-and-performance combination; a used BMW 2 Series offers another performance-car avenue identified in Edmunds’ selection. They are not interchangeable: compare body style, drivetrain, passenger and cargo needs, and the condition of the specific vehicle. The cited selection does not provide a price guarantee or enough detail to declare one the better buy.

Choose by the kind of car you will actually use
- Want an open roof and two seats? Start with the Miata.
- Want a rear-drive coupe? Compare the BRZ and GR86, including local inventory and trim differences.
- Need a hatchback shape? Consider the GTI, new or used.
- Want a Mustang? Compare the actual engine and trim you intend to buy, not only the entry price.
- Shopping used? Expand the search across the relevant model years and badges, but let condition and documentation guide the final choice.
Compare the real out-the-door cost
Use the historical MSRP figures only to understand where the 2025 models started. Ask dealers for current written quotes that identify the vehicle, trim, options, destination, taxes, fees, and any dealer-installed items. For a used car, include an independent inspection and likely immediate maintenance in the budget. Local availability and the specific car’s condition can outweigh a small difference in advertised price.

- Review maintenance and repair records and verify that the title and vehicle identification number match the car.
- Ask about accident damage, modifications, and track or competition use, then have the car inspected by an independent mechanic.
- Check tires, brakes, suspension, leaks, warning lights, and the operation of the transmission and other major systems.
- Compare several cars of the same generation and similar condition; a low asking price alone does not establish value.
What “underrated” means here
There is no objective ranking behind this list. “Underrated” is used as an editorial lens for cars that can merit a closer look when a buyer values an engaging drive, a distinctive format, or performance without moving into a much higher starting-price bracket. Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 affordable-sports-car listings provide additional breadth, including the Elantra N and Nissan Z, but the cited material does not provide enough comparative detail here to assess them alongside these nine picks.
