Tesla’s manual door releases are mechanical backups for situations when electrical power cannot open a door. Front releases are generally just ahead of the window switches; rear releases differ by model, year and equipment. Use the vehicle’s own Manual app to confirm the exact location and procedure before you need it.
How the manual releases work
When power is available, use the normal interior door button or handle control. The manual release is for a no-power situation or when otherwise necessary; it mechanically releases the door latch instead of relying on the powered opening system. A manual release does not necessarily lower the window first. If the glass remains raised, opening the door can damage the window or trim.

These procedures are for opening a door from inside the vehicle. They are not a general crash-response procedure, and they do not mean that every Tesla has the same rear-door release or that a rear release is fitted to every vehicle. The releases described here are built into the vehicle; Tesla’s instructions do not call for a generic emergency-release gadget or accessory.

For a quick comparison, the front-release location is broadly consistent, but the rear procedure is not. Model S uses a cable below the rear-seat carpet; Model X uses a cable behind a falcon-wing speaker grille; Model Y rear equipment may be absent; and Cybertruck places the cable under the rear map-pocket mat. Model 3 instructions differ between the legacy 2017–2023 manual and newer guidance.
Model S: release the front door or rear door
Front door
Pull up the manual release located in front of the window switches. In normal powered operation, Model S uses the button at the top of the interior door handle; the manual release is for loss of power or another necessary situation. The manual release is a distinct backup control, not the routine powered-opening button.
Rear door
- Fold back the carpet below the rear seats to expose the mechanical release cable.
- Pull the cable toward the center of the vehicle to release the door.
The rear release is not in the same pocket-area location described for some other Tesla models. Follow the cable direction in the instructions rather than assuming it should be pulled forward or toward the front. Manual opening may leave a window up, so be mindful that the glass or trim could be damaged as the door opens.

Model 3: check the year before relying on a rear release
Front door
Pull up the manual release ahead of the window switches when the vehicle has no power. Tesla’s Model 3 manual says not to use this release while the vehicle is moving. When power is available, use the normal interior door control instead of treating the manual release as a substitute for routine operation.

Rear door
Rear-release guidance is not uniform across the Model 3 manuals. Tesla’s 2017–2023 manual says only the front doors have manual releases. A newer manual describes a rear mechanism accessed by lifting a cover at the bottom of the rear door pocket and pulling the mechanical cable forward. Do not assume that the newer procedure or rear hardware applies to every Model 3.
This distinction matters if you are learning the procedure in advance: a rear-door pocket that appears to match a procedure from another Model 3 is not enough to establish that the car has a manual release. Check the manual applicable to the particular vehicle, including its year and configuration. The cited manuals also include different regional paths, so a manual result for one version should not be treated as proof that all years, markets or configurations share identical hardware.
Consult the 2017–2023 Model 3 manual or Tesla’s instructions for opening a Model 3 with no power, as applicable to your vehicle.
Model X: release the falcon-wing door carefully
Front door
Pull up the manual release ahead of the window switches.
Rear falcon-wing door
- Carefully remove the speaker grille to reach the mechanical cable.
- Pull the cable down and toward the front of the vehicle to release the latch.
- Manually lift the door open.
The cable movement releases the latch; it does not power the falcon-wing door open. The door must be lifted manually after unlatching. The window will not automatically lower during manual opening. Account for the raised glass to avoid damaging the window or trim, and follow Tesla’s specified cable direction and opening sequence rather than using the normal powered operation as a guide.

Model Y: verify that the rear release is fitted
Front door
Pull up the manual release ahead of the window switches.
Rear door
Tesla notes that not all Model Y vehicles have a rear manual release. Where fitted, the current procedure is to remove the mat at the bottom of the rear-door pocket, remove the access door using its red tab, and pull the cable forward. Confirm both the equipment and steps in the manual for your specific vehicle rather than assuming the release is present.
Do not treat the presence of a removable mat or a procedure published for another Model Y as a guarantee that your car has the same release. Availability is the first thing to confirm; only then should you rely on the published access sequence. Tesla’s manual material warns that manual opening does not automatically lower the window, which may create a risk of window or trim damage.

Cybertruck: release the latch, then push the door
Front door
Without low-voltage power, the interior door-open buttons will not open the doors. Pull up the manual release ahead of the window switches, then push the door open. This is a no-power procedure, not an alternate way to use the powered interior button.
Rear door
- Remove the rubber mat at the bottom of the map pocket.
- Pull the mechanical cable forward.
- Push the door open.

Tesla says its in-vehicle Manual app is customized to the vehicle’s features, configuration, market region and software version. That makes it the most relevant place to confirm a release’s presence and steps, particularly for rear doors and vehicles whose model-year manuals differ. Tesla also cautions that owner information may not include every detail unique to a vehicle. The Tesla Owner’s Manuals portal provides current and legacy manuals; select the exact model and year when available.
It is useful to check the instructions before a no-power situation, especially if you need to know whether a rear release exists. Confirm the model-specific access point, what cover or mat must be moved, which way the cable pulls, and whether the door must then be pushed or lifted. These are not interchangeable details: the rear cable may pull toward the vehicle center, forward, or down and forward depending on the model.

No single procedure should be represented as universal across all production years. Safety points to remember
- Use the normal powered interior opening control when power is available; use the mechanical release only when the vehicle has no power or manual opening is otherwise necessary.
- Do not use the Model 3 or Cybertruck manual release while the vehicle is moving.
- Manual opening may leave the window raised. On the models whose instructions warn about this, opening can damage the window or trim.
- Do not infer that a rear release is present from another vehicle of the same model. Model Y equipment can vary, and Model 3 rear instructions differ among manuals.
- For a Model X falcon-wing door, follow the specified cable direction and lift the door manually after unlatching it.
- Use the correct rear-access point for your vehicle: beneath the rear-seat carpet on Model S, behind the speaker grille on Model X, at the rear-door pocket on some Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, or beneath the map-pocket mat on Cybertruck.
Tesla’s manuals do not provide a relevant general statistic about release performance or a universal schedule for inspecting these mechanisms in the material covered here. The useful comparison is practical: where the release is, whether it is present, how its cable is accessed and moved, and what caution applies during manual opening. If a specific release is damaged or faulty, identifying the exact vehicle and fault comes first; these general instructions do not establish a replacement part or repair tool.
