A supercharger can make a Mustang substantially more powerful, but it also changes what fuel and service the car requires. Ford’s current M-6066-M8800 kit calls for 91-octane-or-higher premium fuel and has its own maintenance schedule. Ford does not publish a controlled stock-versus-supercharged Mustang MPG comparison or a comparative long-term failure rate for otherwise equivalent cars, so there is no reliable universal MPG penalty or guarantee of a particular reliability outcome.
The details below focus on Ford Racing Parts’ M-6066-M8800 kit for specified 2024–2026 5.0L Mustang GT and Dark Horse applications. Requirements and warranty terms vary by kit, model year, vehicle, installer, and location; they should not be assumed to apply to every supercharged Mustang.

What a supercharger changes
A supercharger compresses incoming air so the engine can burn more air and fuel and produce more power. The extra output is not free: using boost can require more fuel, while the hardware and calibration add components and service requirements. How much those changes affect day-to-day ownership depends on the exact kit and how the car is driven.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFord’s M-6066-M8800 package, developed with Whipple, includes a Gen 6 3.0L twin-screw supercharger, dual-pass intercooler, 92 mm throttle body, colder spark plugs, GT500 port fuel injectors, calibration, and a calibration delivery tool. Ford lists 810 hp at 7,500 rpm and 615 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm for cars with active exhaust; it lists 10 hp less for cars without active exhaust. Those figures are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. The kit is not universal: check fitment for the exact model year and engine, and note that Ford says the factory strut tower brace is incompatible with it. Ford’s product listing has the application details.

How much does a supercharger reduce Mustang fuel economy?
There is no supported single MPG figure for the effect. Ford’s current kit page states power output and fuel requirements, but does not provide a comparable EPA rating or controlled before-and-after MPG result. A fixed claim such as “a supercharger costs X MPG” would therefore be misleading.
It is mechanically reasonable to expect greater fuel use when the driver uses the added boost and power: making more power requires the engine to burn more fuel. That does not mean fuel economy falls by the same amount on every trip or for every car. Driving style is a major variable because cruising gently and accelerating hard place very different demands on the engine. Vehicle generation, tune, gearing, traffic, weather, and other operating conditions also affect the result. A particular owner’s trip computer reading is not a controlled comparison and should not be treated as a prediction for another Mustang.
If you need a meaningful estimate for your own car, record its fuel use over several tanks before installation under your normal driving conditions, then repeat the same calculation after installation and tuning. Divide miles driven by gallons purchased, and compare similar routes and conditions where possible. This can show how your use changed; it cannot isolate the supercharger from differences in weather, traffic, or driving habits.

For the M-6066-M8800 kit, yes. Ford’s listing and installation instructions specify premium fuel of at least 91 octane. Follow the requirement for the exact kit and calibration installed rather than assuming another Mustang kit has the same specification. The kit instructions warn against overfilling the supercharger oil, and they also make clear that fuel and service requirements are part of the setup—not optional changes to the stock car’s routine.

Fuel grade can also affect warranty eligibility. Ford’s warranty for its 2015–2017 supercharger applications says failures associated with not using premium fuel are ineligible for warranty repair. That is a term for the specified older applications; do not apply it automatically to a newer kit. Read the warranty documents for the specific part number and get the terms confirmed for your vehicle.
What maintenance does the current Ford kit add?
Use the instructions supplied for the installed kit alongside the Mustang owner’s manual. Ford’s M-6066-M8800 instructions give the following intervals. They are kit-specific and should not be generalized to other superchargers or older Mustangs.
| Item | Ford M-6066-M8800 instruction | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | Change every 5,000 miles using the specified oil. | Keep the kit’s specified oil requirement with the vehicle’s regular service records. |
| Supercharger oil | Check the level at each engine oil change; change every 100,000 miles, sooner if the supercharger is spun faster than standard operation. | Do not overfill. Follow the kit instructions for the correct procedure and fluid. |
| Intercooler coolant level | Check every 7,500 miles. | Use the specified coolant and procedure; do not assume this is covered by the engine’s routine oil service. |
| High-flow air filter | Service every 10,000 miles. | Use the filter’s service method and avoid damaging the filter during cleaning. |
| Spark plugs | Replace the specified plugs every 20,000 miles or earlier. | The kit uses colder plugs; use the specified type rather than substituting based only on appearance. |
| Supercharger/accessory belt | Inspect the accessory drive belt. | Check the kit instructions and have damage, abnormal wear, or noise investigated. |
The M-6066-M8800 instructions are the controlling source for this kit’s service details. Ford’s 2026 Mustang owner-manual schedule also lists inspection of the supercharger drive belt and intercooler/coolant at 20,000-mile intervals in its applicable schedule. Because the kit has separate instructions, use both the vehicle and kit documents; ask Ford or the installer how to resolve any apparent conflict.

Why older service intervals are not a safe substitute
Ford’s separate 2009 Ford/Whipple B1R8 manual calls for different intervals, including filter cleaning at 7,500 miles and plug replacement at 30,000 miles. Those numbers belong to that older application, not the current M-6066-M8800. If a Mustang has an older or non-Ford kit, identify the exact part number and use its instructions instead of borrowing intervals from a newer car.
Does supercharging make a Mustang less reliable?
The available official documentation does not establish a comparative failure rate for stock and supercharged Mustangs with otherwise equivalent use and maintenance. It cannot support a categorical claim that every supercharged Mustang is unreliable—or that one will be just as reliable as a stock car.
The sound conclusion is narrower: a supercharger changes engine output and places additional demands on related systems, while adding components such as the supercharger drive, intercooler, and revised fuel and calibration hardware. Ford’s warranty documentation explicitly warns that superchargers can affect other vehicle systems and excludes coverage for damage caused by the supercharger in the applications described. That is evidence of added system and warranty considerations, not a measured failure-rate comparison.
Installation, calibration, fuel, maintenance, and the way the car is driven all matter to the ownership decision. A car used for frequent high-load driving is not operating under the same conditions as one driven gently on the street. Follow the kit’s service schedule, keep records of installation and maintenance, and have a qualified installer address belt, fluid, cooling, or calibration concerns rather than treating a warning sign as normal.
Will supercharging void the Mustang warranty?
There is no safe one-size-fits-all answer. Warranty coverage depends on the vehicle, kit, installation, registration, jurisdiction, and the relationship between a failure and the modification. Ford’s older selected-supercharger warranty says that correct installation of specified Ford Performance superchargers by an authorized installer does not automatically void unrelated New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage. The same documentation says engine, driveline, and suspension concerns caused by the supercharger are not covered under the referenced warranties. Those terms cover specified 2015–2019 applications; they are not a blanket ruling for every aftermarket kit or later Mustang.
Rank #4
For the M-6066-M8800, Ford advertises 3 years or 36,000 miles of kit warranty coverage measured from the vehicle’s original in-service date, subject to installation and registration conditions. This should not be read as a new, independent three-year period beginning on the installation date. Confirm what is covered, who must install and register the kit, and how a claim is handled before purchase or installation. Ford’s Select Ford Performance Parts Limited Warranty sets out terms for the applications it covers.
Before proceeding, ask for written confirmation tied to your VIN and the kit part number. Confirm the authorized-installer requirement, registration steps and deadlines, the coverage for the specific system or component at issue, and whether the terms differ in your jurisdiction. Do not assume an older Ford warranty statement controls a current kit.
Emissions approval and fitment depend on the car and location
Ford lists M-6066-M8800 for 2024–2026 5.0L Mustang GT and Dark Horse applications, but fitment alone does not establish that the kit is approved for road use everywhere. Ford’s listing identifies CARB Executive Order coverage for 2024–2025 and says the product is not available for California for model year 2026. Check current local requirements for the exact model year and vehicle before buying or installing it; emissions rules and product availability can change.

Ford says the factory strut tower brace is incompatible with this kit, so the installation may affect an existing component. What to verify before choosing a kit
Superchargers should be compared by application and ownership terms, not by peak horsepower alone. Before committing, confirm these details for the exact kit and car:
- Fitment: model year, engine, trim, and any included or incompatible equipment.
- Output and calibration: the manufacturer’s stated power figures, the conditions or hardware configurations attached to them, and the required calibration.
- Fuel: minimum octane and any fuel-related warranty conditions.
- Emissions: approval or availability for the vehicle’s model year and the jurisdiction where it will be registered and driven.
- Installation and registration: who must perform the work and what documentation or registration is required to preserve the kit warranty.
- Service: required fluids, inspection points, and replacement intervals, using the exact kit manual.
- Warranty scope: the duration, mileage limit, start date, exclusions, and treatment of failures in related vehicle systems.
For the current Ford kit, the product listing and installation instructions provide the starting point for fitment and operating requirements. A general catalog page is available at Ford Performance Parts’ supercharger catalog, but the exact part’s instructions and warranty terms should decide the service and coverage questions.
