Intercooler water spray was a genuine factory feature on selected Subaru and Mitsubishi performance cars. A pump sent water through a nozzle onto the intercooler core; as the water evaporated, it carried away heat and helped the intercooler work in hot weather or during heavy load. The manuals describe the intended thermal and airflow benefits, but the available documentation does not provide a controlled horsepower gain or temperature reduction.
That makes “before massive intercoolers” useful as a description of the problem engineers were solving, not a proven adoption timeline. Documents cover a 1998 Mitsubishi Evolution IV, 2002 Subaru Impreza, 2005 Mitsubishi Evolution IX, 2006 Subaru WRX STI and 2019 Subaru S209, without establishing which manufacturer used the feature first.

What an intercooler water sprayer actually does
A turbocharger compresses intake air, and compression raises its temperature. Hot charge air is less dense than cool air, so the intercooler removes heat before the air reaches the engine. Repeated hard acceleration, high ambient temperature and limited airflow can heat-soak the intercooler, reducing its ability to cool the next charge.

Subaru’s 2002 service-manual description says the spray lowers air temperature and increases intake efficiency; Mitsubishi’s Evolution IX supplement describes cooling the intake air and improving filling efficiency.

Those are engineering objectives, not measured results. The factory passages available for these models do not report a controlled before-and-after intake-temperature test, a pressure comparison or a verified horsepower increase.
Which factory cars documented the feature?
Water spray was not fitted to every Subaru or Mitsubishi, and the hardware and controls varied by model. The documented examples are:

How Subaru’s systems were arranged
2002 Impreza: trunk tank and diffusion nozzle
The 2002 Subaru Impreza service-manual excerpt places the water tank in the trunk. A hose carries water to a diffusion-type nozzle in the intercooler duct. The stated trigger is high intake-air temperature, and the stated result is lower air temperature and increased intake efficiency.

“Water is sprayed from the nozzle in the intercooler duct to cool down the intercooler with water spray when the intake air temperature becomes high so that the air temperature is lowered and air intake efficiency is increased.”
This arrangement separates the spray reservoir from the engine bay, leaving the top-mounted intercooler and its ducting accessible while putting the tank where the manual specifies. The passage does not give a tank capacity, spray rate or quantified temperature drop.

2006 WRX STI: a timed driver command
The 2006 WRX STI owner’s manual describes a dedicated intercooler water-spray switch. Pressing and releasing it runs the spray for approximately two seconds. The manual’s purpose statement is to help maintain adequate intercooler performance when outside temperature is high.
That two-second figure is an operating detail, not a claim that every Subaru system used the same timer. It also means a driver could choose when to spend water, rather than relying solely on an automatic temperature strategy.
2019 S209: a complete monitored system
The 2019 S209 service material shows that the feature remained a fully engineered subsystem rather than a loose aftermarket add-on. Its listed parts are:
- Water tank
- Spray motor
- Level switch
- Relay
- Timer
- Driver switch
- Hose
- Intercooler nozzle
For the S209 pre-delivery inspection, Subaru specifies pure water. The warning light is expected to illuminate when the tank level is approximately 0.3 L or lower. That threshold belongs to the S209 inspection procedure; it should not be assumed for an earlier Impreza or WRX STI.
How Mitsubishi controlled the spray
Evolution IV: shared washer-style plumbing
The 1998 Evolution IV workshop manual shows separate spray circuits for the intercooler and radiator, with plumbing tied to washer-tank arrangements and dedicated nozzles. This is evidence of factory-designed water delivery, not proof that every Evolution IV trim or market carried identical hardware.

The diagram establishes the plumbing concept but does not provide a performance test, spray duration or automatic trigger description for this model.
Evolution IX: manual and ECU automatic modes
The 2005 Evolution IX workshop supplement is more explicit about control logic. The engine ECU accepts manual and automatic spray commands. In automatic mode, it operates intermittently during high-load running, energizing a spray relay and motor so water reaches the intercooler and cools the intake charge.
This is materially different from the 2006 Subaru description: the Mitsubishi documentation identifies an ECU-managed high-load strategy as well as a manual command, while the Subaru owner’s manual gives the driver a timed switch operation. Neither document establishes that one approach cools better than the other.
What happens during a spray cycle?
The exact wiring differs by vehicle, but the documented systems share the same basic sequence:
- A command is issued. The driver presses a switch on systems with manual control. On the Evolution IX, the ECU can also request spray during high-load operation.
- The control circuit powers the motor. The Mitsubishi supplement identifies a relay and motor; the S209 parts list includes the same functional elements plus a timer and level switch.
- Water travels through the hose. Reservoir placement and hose routing are vehicle-specific. The 2002 Impreza tank is in the trunk.
- The nozzle distributes water over the intercooler. Subaru calls the 2002 part a diffusion-type nozzle. The water wets the external surface rather than entering the intake tract.
- Evaporation removes heat. As water changes from liquid to vapor, it takes heat from the intercooler and its surroundings. A cooler intercooler has more thermal headroom for the next intake-air charge.
- The system stops or cycles. The 2006 WRX STI manual specifies approximately two seconds per switch press-and-release. Evolution IX automatic operation is described as intermittent at high load.
Water availability, ambient humidity, vehicle speed, airflow, intercooler design and the engine’s current heat load all affect how useful evaporation can be. The manuals explain the mechanism but do not assign a universal benefit to a spray event.

Does intercooler water spray increase power?
It can support the conditions an engine needs for consistent output by reducing charge-air heat, but the cited factory documents do not quantify a power increase. They use phrases such as “maintain adequate intercooler performance,” “lower air temperature” and “improve filling efficiency.” Those phrases describe intended function, not a dyno result.
Any power change would depend on what was limiting the engine before the spray: intake temperature, ignition strategy, knock control, turbocharger efficiency, ambient conditions or another factor. If the intercooler is already adequately cooled, spraying more water cannot guarantee additional power. If the system is heat-soaked, restoring cooler charge temperatures may help the engine return toward its normal operating behavior.
Claims of a specific horsepower gain or a fixed temperature reduction should therefore be treated as unsupported unless they identify the exact vehicle, test conditions, water state, spray duration and measurement method.
Subaru and Mitsubishi approaches compared

Maintenance and troubleshooting
Start with water quality and level
For the 2019 S209 procedure, use pure water and observe the low-level warning at approximately 0.3 L. Other models may have different instructions, tank shapes and warning strategies, so use the manual for the exact year and trim rather than transferring S209 numbers to an earlier car.

The S209 service documentation specifically calls for checking the nozzle for clogging, damage or deformation. A restricted nozzle can make a healthy motor appear ineffective. Inspect the hose and nozzle together, looking for kinks, leaks or a blocked outlet. Do not force a sharp object through a precision nozzle unless the vehicle manual explicitly permits that method.

Check the electrical chain
A system that does not spray can fail at several points: an empty or low tank, level-switch intervention, blown protection, relay, motor, timer, switch or wiring. The S209 parts list identifies each of those functional elements. On the Evolution IX, the relay and motor are part of the ECU-commanded circuit. Diagnose the vehicle-specific wiring diagram rather than applying a generic pinout.
Verify replacement parts by vehicle
A replacement nozzle is a legitimate repair item, but “Subaru intercooler water spray nozzle” is not enough information to establish fitment. Confirm model, model year, market and trim, then match the hose connection and spray pattern to the service information. The same caution applies to tanks, motors, relays and switches.
Do not assume an improvised kit is equivalent
The documented cars use coordinated reservoirs, pumps, controls, hoses and nozzles. An improvised container or unrestricted spray can introduce leaks, electrical problems, incorrect water placement or poor coverage. None of the cited manuals establishes the safety, fitment or performance of a universal retrofit, so a retrofit should not be presented as factory-equivalent without vehicle-specific engineering and testing.

What the “before massive intercoolers” idea gets right—and wrong
The framing captures a real engineering trade-off: when space, airflow or packaging limits the intercooler, adding a temporary evaporative heat sink can help it cope with a demanding operating condition. It is a simple physical idea, and Subaru and Mitsubishi documented it in production performance-car systems.
But the available documents do not prove that water spray came before “massive intercoolers,” identify the first manufacturer to adopt it or show that spray was a substitute for a larger core. The documented dates span 1998 to 2019, and the sources do not provide a complete development history. The defensible conclusion is narrower: selected factory turbo cars used water spray as a condition-dependent aid to intercooler performance.
