Before paying, get the refund conditions and full price in writing.
What a sports-car “preorder” can mean
“Preorder” is an informal label, not a precise description of what you have agreed to buy. A payment may be connected to an expression of interest, a dealer reservation, an allocation, or a signed vehicle purchase order. Those arrangements can represent different stages of a transaction, so do not assume that the same cancellation terms apply to all of them.

This table describes questions to ask, not legal definitions or guarantees about what a particular label means. The document you sign—and any applicable law—matters more than the label used in a conversation or advertisement. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers to ask about a dealer’s return policy, get it in writing, and read it; its guidance does not establish one universal rule for vehicle deposits. What to get in writing before you pay
Ask the seller to put the transaction’s terms in the reservation form, buyer’s order, purchase agreement, or another document you can keep. If a salesperson explains a condition verbally, ask for it to be reflected in the paperwork. The FTC recommends obtaining the out-the-door price in writing and confirming the vehicle is actually available; compare the documents with the terms you were given before signing. - Seller and vehicle: Record the seller’s legal name and identify the specific car or allocation being reserved as precisely as the seller can. Ask whether the seller has the order or allocation it says it is reserving.
- Payment: Confirm the amount, who receives it, how it will be paid, and whether it will be credited toward the vehicle’s purchase price.
- Refund conditions: Get a direct answer on whether you can cancel and receive the payment back, how to request the refund, and how long processing is expected to take. Do not rely on an unexplained “refundable” or “nonrefundable” label.
- Deadlines and deductions: Identify any cancellation deadline, stated fee or deduction, and circumstances in which the seller says it may keep some or all of the payment.
- Price and configuration: Ask whether the price, options, and specifications are firm or may change. Establish what happens if a material term changes and you do not want to proceed.
- Delivery: Ask whether an estimated date is a commitment or only an estimate, what notice you will receive if delivery slips, and what remedy the agreement provides if the seller cannot supply the car.
- Financing: Find out what happens if financing is unavailable or the final financing terms differ from those you expected.
- Nature of the document: Ask whether it records interest only, reserves an allocation, or also serves as a binding purchase order. Read the full document rather than relying on a description of its purpose.
These are practical questions for making an offer legible; they are not a claim that every term is legally required or that a particular clause is enforceable in every state. Keep the complete form or agreement, payment receipt, delivery estimate, and messages about changes or cancellation together. Having the record helps you identify what was promised if a disagreement arises.
Are sports-car deposits refundable?
There is no single answer that applies to every sports-car preorder. A deposit’s refundability depends on the agreement and may also depend on state law and the type and circumstances of the transaction. The word “deposit” alone does not tell you whether you can recover the money. Nor should a seller’s statement that a deposit is nonrefundable be treated, without checking the contract and applicable law, as a complete answer to a particular dispute.
Before paying, have the seller state in the signed document what happens if you cancel; if the seller changes the price or specifications; if the seller cannot deliver by a stated date; or if financing falls through. Those are possible situations to address in the agreement, not universal legal events that automatically entitle a buyer to a refund. If a condition is unclear, ask for clarification before signing or sending money.

Can you cancel within three days?
Do not assume a dealer vehicle purchase comes with a federal three-day cooling-off period. The FTC says federal law does not generally require dealers to give buyers three days to cancel a vehicle deal and return the car. Some state laws differ, and a dealer may offer its own return or cancellation policy. The details depend on the law and transaction that apply, so read the written policy rather than treating three days as an automatic right. FTC guidance on dealer return policies.
That guidance concerns dealer return policies and does not resolve every state-law question or every kind of preorder. If you need to know whether a specific agreement can be cancelled, the state, seller, sales channel, and signed paperwork matter. The FTC’s general consumer guidance is not a determination of your rights under an individual contract.
What to do if you decide to cancel
Follow the agreement’s cancellation procedure, if it gives one, and make your request in a way that creates a record. Be specific about the transaction and the payment rather than sending a vague message. A written request also makes it easier to show when you asked and what you requested.

- Review the signed documents. Locate the reservation form or purchase agreement, refund language, deadlines, and any required notice method.
- Send a clear cancellation request. Identify yourself, the vehicle or order, the date and amount paid, and that you are requesting cancellation. Use the notice channel the agreement specifies.
- Keep proof. Save the message, delivery or submission confirmation, payment receipt, and any response. If you speak by phone, make a dated note of whom you spoke with and what was said, then seek written confirmation.
- Confirm the proposed refund in writing. If the seller agrees to refund money, ask it to confirm the amount and expected date. Keep that confirmation with your other transaction records.
- Escalate a disputed deposit appropriately. Review the agreement and contact your state attorney general or consumer-protection office. A local lawyer can assess a specific contract and the law in your jurisdiction.
A request to cancel is not itself proof that you are entitled to a refund. Whether the seller must return the money depends on the applicable agreement and law; preserving the paperwork gives you and any adviser a basis for evaluating the dispute.
How delivery delays affect cancellation and refunds
A late sports-car delivery does not have one universally applicable answer. In particular, do not automatically apply a general merchandise shipping rule to every factory preorder, allocation reservation, in-person dealer purchase, or deposit. The FTC describes separate rules and guidance for particular types of orders; the transaction channel and facts matter.
- Most mail, online, or telephone merchandise orders: The FTC says a seller generally must ship within the time it states, or within 30 days if it states no shipping time. If the seller cannot ship on time, it must notify the buyer and offer a choice between accepting the delay and cancelling for a full refund. The 30-day figure is a shipping-time rule for this merchandise-order context, not a general deadline for delivering every new sports car. FTC explanation of merchandise orders.
- Used cars bought online: The FTC’s online used-car guidance says dealers must offer cancellation and a prompt refund when the car does not ship on time. That guidance addresses online used-car purchases; it should not be presented as a rule for every new-car preorder or dealer deposit. FTC guidance on buying a used car online.
For your sports-car order, check the contract’s delivery language, whether the seller gave a stated shipping or delivery time, how the order was placed, and which law governs. Ask the dealer in writing whether a date is an estimate or a commitment and what options the agreement provides if it changes. The FTC sources above do not establish identical delivery-delay rights for every new sports-car order.

What if the dealer changes the financing terms?
A financing change is different from a general dispute about a preorder deposit. If you believed the vehicle deal was arranged but the dealer later presents different financing terms, review the new terms carefully before agreeing. The FTC advises buyers who reject the new deal to tell the dealer to cancel, ask for the down payment and trade-in back, obtain written confirmation that the application and contract are cancelled, and keep copies of the paperwork. This advice concerns a change in financing arrangements. It should not be broadened into a promise that every buyer can recover every preorder payment whenever they ask to cancel. Keep the financing documents and cancellation confirmation with the rest of your records so it is clear which arrangement was declined.

- Find the dealership’s contact information independently instead of relying only on the link or phone number in an unexpected message.
- Call the real dealership and ask it to verify the specific vehicle or order, the seller’s identity, and the payment instructions.
- If practical, see the vehicle and dealership in person. If distance makes that impossible, the FTC suggests arranging an independent inspection.
- Be wary if the seller insists that you pay only by wire transfer. Do not send money until you have independently verified the seller and the order.
- Keep a receipt and a copy of the agreement showing who received the payment and what it was for.
Comparing two reservation offers
If you are choosing between more than one dealer or reservation, compare the documents rather than relying on verbal assurances or the size of the requested deposit alone. Put the material terms side by side before you pay:
- Who is the legal seller, and can the seller verify the vehicle or allocation?
- What exact event lets you cancel, and is there a deadline or stated deduction?
- How much money is at risk, and is it credited toward the purchase price?
- Are the price, options, and delivery estimate firm or subject to change?
- What does the written agreement say if delivery is delayed, the seller cannot supply the car, or financing falls through?
- What process and timeframe does the seller specify for a refund?
A lower deposit is not necessarily the better offer if it is tied to unclear terms; a larger payment is not necessarily a stronger reservation. Focus on what each agreement actually says about the money, the car, changes, and cancellation. If the seller will not answer a material question in writing, you cannot assess that point from the reservation terms alone.
