Rivian and Volkswagen are adapting Rivian’s zonal electrical architecture and software approach through a joint venture. Volkswagen’s reported winter testing of production-intent architecture is a development milestone; it does not mean that every planned Volkswagen model already uses the technology.
What the R1S has to do with Volkswagen
The R1S is a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, and a working example of Rivian’s technology approach. Rivian says the R1S and R1T use its zonal network architecture and digital user experience management, with functionality that can be expanded through cloud-enabled over-the-air updates. Rivian’s investor materials describe those vehicle systems.

Volkswagen’s interest is in adapting and scaling elements of that technology—not putting an R1S body or a complete Rivian vehicle under a Volkswagen badge. The companies’ joint venture is developing architecture and software intended for vehicles from both businesses. IEEE Spectrum’s 2024 account of the R1S technology stack helped frame the SUV as a preview of that approach.
What zonal architecture changes
From function-based controllers to vehicle zones
In a conventional domain-based arrangement, separate controllers handle broad functions such as powertrain, safety, and infotainment. A zonal design instead organizes controllers around physical areas of the vehicle, with the system scaled to the features required. The IEEE Spectrum account describes Rivian’s rationale as reducing the proliferation of control boxes and the wiring complexity that can come with them. That is a design rationale, not a verified measurement of savings or improved reliability.

Why software is part of the story
The joint venture is working on a software-defined vehicle architecture combining modular central computers with zonal electronics. Volkswagen describes intended capabilities such as advanced infotainment and automated-driving features, alongside software updates delivered over the air. These are company-described capabilities and goals; they should not be read as a promise that every feature will be present on every model.
What Volkswagen has tested—and what remains planned
In March 2026, Volkswagen said the joint venture had completed winter testing of production-intent zonal architecture on reference vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi, and Scout. The testing took place in Phoenix and Arjeplog. Volkswagen said the team evaluated hardware and software working together on functions including all-wheel drive, traction control, and driving performance, and validated over-the-air functionality. This is evidence of a test milestone on reference vehicles, not proof of production deployment across the group.

Volkswagen says it intends to deploy the architecture in electric vehicles for Western Hemisphere markets. An earlier progress announcement named the ID.EVERY1 as the first Volkswagen Group vehicle planned to use a version of the architecture, with a 2027 launch schedule stated at the time. That is a company plan, distinct from the completed winter tests. Rivian’s 2026 filing, meanwhile, says R2 deliveries began in late April 2026; the R2 is a Rivian vehicle, not Volkswagen’s first planned Group model to use the architecture.
How to read the partnership announcement
When the joint venture was announced in 2024, Volkswagen described the arrangement as having a total deal size of up to $5.8 billion, combining planned investments and support with a 50 percent stake in the venture. “Up to” sets an announced maximum; it does not mean the entire amount has already been paid. The venture’s remit includes electrical architecture, software, electronic control units, and related network design.

The useful distinction is between the technology being developed, testing on reference vehicles, and a future model’s announced production plan. Those stages do not establish that a specific current Volkswagen EV has the same systems as the R1S, or that future vehicles will match the R1S in performance or features.

The R1S makes Rivian’s zonal and software-managed approach tangible. For Volkswagen, the potential significance is a shared technical foundation that can be adapted across brands and vehicle segments, with the goal of integrating electronics and software and supporting updates over time. The available announcements do not provide a consumer performance comparison between the R1S and any future Volkswagen model.
