BMW’s B58 has a range of reported ownership experiences, but the available evidence does not support a reliable fleet-wide failure rate or a single reliability score. Owner discussions include a first-generation example with more than 100,000 miles alongside reports of coolant leaks and concerns about B58TU oil pumps. Those accounts are anecdotal, not proof that the issues are common. For a specific used BMW, the engine variant, maintenance history, symptoms and VIN-specific recall status matter more than the B58 name alone.
What owners say about B58 reliability
Online B58 discussions include both positive high-mileage experiences and questions about potential problems. One first-generation owner described an example with more than 100,000 miles; other threads raise coolant leaks and B58TU oil-pump concerns. These are individual accounts and discussion topics, not a representative sample of B58 owners.

That distinction matters: owner posts can help a buyer decide what to ask about or inspect on a particular car, but they cannot establish how often a component fails. The available sources do not provide a population-level B58 failure rate, a generation-by-generation reliability ranking, or a matched comparison with competing engines. Owner discussions about B58 reliability should be treated as leads, not statistics.

What BMW’s 24V-576 recall does—and does not—mean
BMW’s US recall 24V-576 concerns the starter, not a blanket internal-engine defect. BMW says certain 2019–2021 model-year 3 Series Sedan, 7 Series, 8 Series, X5, X6 and X7 vehicles with a specified B58 configuration may be affected. The recall notice was issued July 31, 2024, and updated September 27, 2024. It does not say every B58-powered vehicle is included.

BMW describes possible mechanical damage to the starter that could prevent the engine from starting. Repeated, excessively long starting attempts may electrically overload the starter; if acoustic insulation is contaminated by oil, an extreme thermal event could result. BMW’s notice states: “In certain cases in which the engine starter has some mechanical damage, the engine may not be able to be started.” See BMW’s recall 24V-576 notice for the stated scope and details.
The recall is a defined safety issue affecting certain vehicles, not evidence that all B58 engines have a general internal failure pattern. BMW says owners can check recall status by VIN and that recall repairs are free at an authorized BMW Center. BMW’s recall lookup and FAQ provide the official route to check a car.

Other issues mentioned in B58 discussions
Coolant leaks and oil-pump concerns
Owner threads raise coolant leaks and concerns about oil pumps on B58TU engines. The discussions in the available sources do not establish frequency, affected production ranges, or a confirmed defect pattern. Treat these as reasons to ask about symptoms and service history on the car you are considering—not as proof that a particular B58 variant will develop the issue.
Oil-filter insert difficulty during service
A third-party index of service-bulletin text says that, on rare occasions, the original B58c/B58m oil-filter insert can be difficult to remove or can break apart in its housing during an oil service. The complete underlying BMW bulletin context was not verified, so this narrow note should not be generalized into a claim about filter design or engine longevity. If doing your own service, verify that any removal tool fits the exact engine and filter housing; the indexed note does not establish that a particular aftermarket tool is required or BMW-approved. Why tuning and modifications change the assessment
BMW of North America’s 2017 technical communication cautions that excessive engine loads may compromise the long-term reliability of drivetrain parts. It also says BMW NA will not provide technical support or repair advice for engines modified with third-party tuner kits. This is a caution about loads and support, not a quantified estimate of how a particular tune changes B58 failure risk. A modified car therefore needs its own history and inspection; the engine family’s reputation alone cannot establish how it has been treated. BMW’s 2017 communication on third-party tuning.
How to assess a used BMW with a B58
- Identify the exact car and engine configuration. Record the VIN, model year, model and engine variant rather than relying on a seller’s description that it has “a B58.” The recall applies only to certain configurations.
- Check open recalls by VIN. Use BMW’s recall lookup or the My BMW App. You can also use NHTSA’s recalls, complaints and safety-issue resources. Ask for records showing that any applicable recall work was completed.
- Review maintenance records and mileage. Look for documented servicing and compare the records with the seller’s account of the car’s use. A high-mileage owner report elsewhere is not a substitute for this vehicle’s history.
- Ask about modifications and symptoms. Establish whether the car is stock or tuned, and ask directly about coolant loss, warning messages, oil-pressure concerns and starting trouble. BMW’s tuning communication cautions about excessive loads but does not quantify risk for a specific tune.
- Have the individual car assessed. If records or symptoms raise questions, ask a qualified technician to inspect the vehicle. These prompts are not a universal B58 inspection procedure or a diagnosis of a problem.
So, how reliable is the B58?
The responsible answer is qualified: owner accounts show that some examples reach high mileage, while other owners discuss specific concerns, but neither anecdotes nor the defined starter recall establish an overall B58 failure rate. There is not enough comparable evidence here to rank B58 generations numerically. For a buyer, a VIN check, documented service history, modification history and the condition of the exact car are more useful than a reputation claim about the engine family.
