This is an editorial judgment, not an official BMW ranking or a measured comparison. Put greater weight on outright pace or modern technology and the G90 or F90 could move up; prioritize mechanical distinctiveness and history, and the early cars have the strongest case.
How the ranking works
Every M5 has paired executive-sedan practicality with unusually high performance, but the formula has changed substantially: the E28 established the hand-built inline-six idea; the E39 ushered in the V8; the E60 made a naturally aspirated V10 its signature; the F10 introduced turbocharging; the F90 added M xDrive; and the G90 made the M5 a plug-in hybrid.

The ranking below favors a distinctive M5 identity and a convincing balance of performance and road-car usability, while also accounting for design and historical significance. BMW’s published specifications provide context, not a common-condition test across generations. Figures use different units, markets, trims and measurement conventions, so they should not be read as directly comparable test results.
7. G90 (2024–present): the biggest break with the old formula
The G90 is last here because its plug-in-hybrid powertrain, added technology and modern scale take it furthest from the lighter, more mechanically direct image many enthusiasts associate with earlier M5s. That is a preference about character, not a finding that the car is deficient.

The counterargument is substantial: it is the first electrified M5 and has the line’s highest published output. In its June 2024 launch material, BMW calls it the seventh generation and quotes 727 hp, 1,000 Nm and 0–100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. BMW introduced the car with the statement, “The BMW M5 is powering into a new era.” BMW Group PressClub: G90 launch information.
6. E60 (2005–2010): the unforgettable V10
The E60’s naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V10 is arguably the most singular engine statement in M5 history. BMW reports 507 PS at a 7,750-rpm power peak and lists a maximum engine speed of 8,250 rpm. BMW Group PressClub UK: M5 history BMW M: M5 generations.
That exceptional engine gives the E60 an identity unlike the V8 cars on either side of it. In this ranking, its more specialized character makes it a less convincing all-round expression of the M5 than the top-ranked generations. That is an editorial distinction, not a reliability judgment.

The F10 replaced the V10 with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 and became the first turbocharged M5, according to BMW. BMW Group PressClub: F10 launch information BMW’s generation overview lists 560–575 PS and 680 Nm across versions; its English-language history gives the 30 Jahre special edition as 600 hp. The F10 makes a persuasive case for effortless performance and business-sedan comfort. Its turbocharged torque delivery, however, gives it a less distinctive engine personality than the E39’s V8 or the E60’s V10. That character comparison is the reason for its position, not a claim that it is slower or less capable.
4. F90 (2017–2023): the most usable modern performance package
The F90 was the first M5 generation with all-wheel drive, pairing a twin-turbo V8 with BMW M xDrive. That makes it a strong choice for drivers who value all-weather traction, modern pace and broad usability. BMW’s generation overview presents some figures specifically for Competition versions, while market and trim specifications vary; there is no single output or acceleration figure here that applies universally. BMW M: M5 generations BMW USA: M5 model information.
Its all-wheel-drive capability makes the F90 an exceptionally broad interpretation of the M5. In this enthusiast-oriented order, the move away from the earlier rear-drive generations’ more old-school identity keeps it in the middle rather than at the top.

The E28 established the template: a restrained, relatively compact sedan, a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre inline-six and performance hidden beneath an understated shape. BMW dates its introduction to autumn 1984, while its generation overview labels it 1985; launch timing and model-year conventions vary by market. The U.S. introduction came later, so a single start year would be misleading. BMW Group PressClub UK: M5 history BMW M: M5 generations BMW USA: M5 model information.

BMW’s overview gives the E28 286 PS, 340 Nm and a 0–100 km/h time of 6.5 seconds. These are BMW-published figures, not results from a test standardized against later M5s. BMW M: M5 generations. Its importance as the original gives it a high place here, though a ranking focused mainly on contemporary speed, comfort or convenience would put it lower.
2. E34 (1988–1995): a thoughtful evolution, including a rare Touring
The E34 developed the original six-cylinder concept through 3.6- and 3.8-litre versions. BMW’s overview lists outputs from 315 to 340 PS and torque from 360 to 400 Nm across the range. BMW M: M5 generations. Its classic proportions and measured development make it an appealing all-round historical M5.
The E34 also brought an unusual estate variant, the M5 Touring. BMW’s 2017 history says 900 were made, while its 2024 overview describes production as fewer than 1,000; the sources use different phrasing, so the exact figure depends on which account is cited. 1. E39 (1998–2003): the best balance of the M5 formula
The E39 ranks first because it combines a major mechanical step with a coherent, restrained M5 character. It introduced the model’s V8 era: BMW lists the 4,941-cm³ engine at 400 PS and 500 Nm. BMW M: M5 generations.

BMW Group Classic: BMW M5 E39. The combination of a naturally aspirated V8, executive-sedan usefulness and relatively restrained styling makes the E39 the most balanced expression of the M5 in this ranking. BMW M says many fans consider its design the most attractive among M5 generations; that is BMW’s characterization of fan sentiment, not the result of a published survey. BMW M: M5 design and generations.
What changes from one M5 generation to the next?
The headline shifts are the move from the original inline-six to the E39’s V8, the E60’s naturally aspirated V10, the F10’s first turbocharged engine, the F90’s all-wheel drive and the G90’s plug-in-hybrid powertrain. These are changes in the kind of performance each car offers, not a simple progression in which newer automatically means better. BMW identifies seven generations in this sequence: E28, E34, E39, E60, F10, F90 and G90. BMW M: M5 generations BMW Group PressClub: G90 launch information.
There is no established all-generation independent test or representative owner survey here to support a universal winner, reliability order or current-value ranking. The result is therefore best read as a character-and-history ranking: the E39 wins on balance, while the G90’s final position reflects a preference for the traditional, mechanically direct M5 idea over electrification and added technology.
