The 968, introduced in 1991, returned to the 928-style housing and function. That distinction matters when identifying a mechanism or looking for parts.
How the Porsche pop-up mechanism works
When the driver switches on the headlights, the powered mechanism raises the headlight housings from the body and turns them into their operating position. The direction depends on the model: 928 housings rotate forward; 924 and 944 housings rotate backward. Porsche says the 968 brought back the 928-style headlight housing and function in 1991. Porsche’s heritage account describes these differences.

The appearance was primarily a styling choice, but it also reflected the lighting technology and regulations of the period. Porsche presented the 928 at the Geneva International Motor Show in spring 1977. Harm Lagaaij, whom Porsche identifies as its Chief Designer from 1989 to 2004, recalled: “The height of the headlights had to comply with precisely defined guidelines.” He also said, “There was just one solution: pop-up headlights.” Porsche notes that the large headlights provided strong illumination with the technology available at the time.
How to manually raise a 1987 Porsche 944’s headlights
The 1987 944 owner’s manual describes a manual method using the knob on the motor drive shaft in the front of the engine compartment. Its instructions are specific to that model-year example; check the manual for your exact car before attempting the procedure.

- Use the ignition and headlight switch to check whether the automatic mechanism operates.
- If you need to operate the mechanism manually, locate the knob on the motor drive shaft at the front of the engine compartment.
- Turn the knob to the left to open or close the headlights, as described in the 1987 manual.
Safety warning: The manual says not to turn the knob while the automatic mechanism is operating. The motor may turn suddenly and cause injury. The reproduced manual instructions are available at Pelican Parts’ 944 technical specifications page.
Identifying parts for a repair
Start with the exact model, year, variant and market rather than searching for a generic Porsche pop-up headlight motor. Porsche Classic’s Genuine Parts Catalogue organizes lookup by model and year, including the 924, 928, 944 and 968.

Porsche-published ORIGINALE parts material lists a lower protective cap for the pop-up-headlight electric motor, part number 477941386, with application notes for 924 and 944 model ranges. This identifies a cap, not a replacement motor, and does not establish that the part—or any motor or other component—fits every year or variant. Confirm current part-number and vehicle fitment with the catalogue or a Porsche parts specialist before ordering.
The Porsche 924 Owners Club lists a resource titled “Service the Headlight Mechanism,” posted 2 March 2025. Its listing page exposes an attached PDF but does not show the repair instructions in the readable page text: Porsche 924 Owners Club.

Why Porsche stopped using pop-up headlights
Porsche says advances in lighting technology ended the pop-up era with the first Boxster in 1996 and the 911 generation 996 in 1997, when lighting functions could be integrated into a single housing. The older designs remain model-specific systems, so identify the car before applying repair instructions or selecting parts.
