Inspired by the road-traveling Count Rossi Porsche 917, it was specially prepared and permitted to drive near Le Mans—not homologated as a road car for general sale.
Who is the “famous Porschephile”?
It is Roger Penske, the motorsport team owner and businessman. Porsche said Penske was “nominated as the customer for the car, with the 963 being named in his honor.” The project brought together Porsche AG, Porsche Penske Motorsport and Porsche Cars North America. Porsche’s wording identifies Penske as the nominated customer; it does not describe a public sale or say the car was simply awarded to him. Porsche’s announcement officially introduced the car on June 6, 2025, after earlier speculation about a road-going 963.
What is the Porsche 963 RSP?
The RSP is a one-off adaptation of Porsche’s 963 endurance racer, created to echo a notable road-going Porsche from 50 years earlier. “RSP” honors Penske, while the project’s styling and story look back to the Count Rossi Porsche 917, chassis 30. Porsche says the 963 RSP is not a homologated addition to its model lineup and is intended to remain a very special one-off. It is therefore not a new customer model or a production road car.
Why it recalls the Count Rossi 917
In April 1975, the Count Rossi 917 traveled on public roads from Zuffenhausen to Paris, driven by its owner. Porsche says that car remains in France and on the road. The 963 RSP was made as a modern counterpart to that unusual chapter in the 917’s history, with Martini Silver paint and bespoke tan leather and Alcantara trim among the visual references. The 917 journey took place 50 years before the RSP’s 2025 reveal. Porsche’s account describes the inspiration and the original car’s history.

What “road-legal” means for this 963
Porsche prepared the RSP for a specific public-road debut near Le Mans. That did not make it a generally homologated road car. Porsche says the car drove on the road and wore plates for that debut with special permission from French authorities and support from the Automobile Club de l’Ouest. Its road use should be understood in that limited context, not as evidence that it can be ordinarily registered or driven on public roads in every country.
Changes made for the road appearance
- Raised ride height and softened dampers for the dedicated setup.
- Adjusted the control unit so the lights operated more like those of a road car.
- Modified bodywork to cover the wheel arches, and fitted Michelin wet-weather compound tires.
- Added a horn and made other mechanical and electronic changes for the debut.

Powertrain: race hardware, adjusted for road use
The 963 RSP retains the 963’s hybrid V8 powertrain in standard race tune, including a lithium-ion battery capable of electric-only running. Porsche remapped power delivery from the motor-generator for smoother road use and reworked the powertrain to run on pump gasoline. The announcement does not state a separate road-car output figure, so there is no basis here for assigning it a new horsepower rating. Porsche’s technical description outlines the changes.
One-off details inside and out
The car has a painted Martini Silver finish rather than the competition car’s wrap, along with altered vents and bodywork. Its tan leather and Alcantara interior includes a detachable 3D-printed cupholder. Porsche also says a custom Snap-on toolset and crash helmet accompany the car. These details are part of a bespoke commission, not a package offered to buyers.

Where Porsche said it would appear
In 2025, Porsche announced a display at the Circuit de la Sarthe during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, followed by a return to Stuttgart for display at the Porsche Museum and an appearance with the 917 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. The Le Mans organizer also reported that itinerary. Those announcements establish the planned appearances, not the car’s present location or custody. The 24 Hours of Le Mans announcement gives the event context and planned stops.
