How Often Should You Service an Older Car Used Every Day?

An older car driven every day does not have one universal service interval. Follow its exact factory schedule, including severe-service guidance that matches your driving.

Service an older daily-driven car according to the maintenance schedule for its exact year, make, model, and engine—not a universal “older car” interval. Follow the schedule’s severe-service guidance if your driving matches the manufacturer’s definition, and have warning lights, unusual noises, or leaks checked when they appear rather than waiting for routine service.

Start with the schedule for your exact car

Your owner’s manual or service booklet is the authority for when to change oil and filters, rotate tires, inspect components, and replace scheduled items. AAA’s maintenance guide recommends following the factory schedule; its maintenance guidance also explains that service can be based on mileage, elapsed time, an oil-life monitor, or whichever limit comes first. Check the instructions for your specific vehicle rather than assuming that age alone sets a shorter interval.

If you do not have the manual, look up the owner documentation for the precise year, model, and engine through the automaker. Without those details, a general article cannot establish a safe, model-specific interval or fluid specification.

Does everyday commuting count as severe service?

Not automatically. Daily use matters less than the conditions in which the car is driven. Manufacturers define severe service for their own vehicles, but common triggers include frequent short trips, extended stop-and-go traffic, extreme heat or cold, dusty conditions, towing, and carrying heavy loads. AAA discusses these examples in its severe-service guidance.

Compare your actual driving with the severe-use definition in your manual. If it fits, use the severe-service schedule; do not assume the normal schedule applies simply because your commute is routine. One manufacturer’s definition may not match another’s.

How often should you change oil in an older car?

Use the oil grade and change interval specified for the exact engine, and apply its normal- or severe-service schedule as appropriate. NHTSA’s vehicle maintenance guidance says to change oil as recommended in the owner’s manual, using the recommended grade.

AAA lists 5,000–7,500 miles as a common oil-change range, but says the right interval depends on the vehicle, driving habits, and oil type. That range is orientation, not a universal rule for older cars or a substitute for the manual. Neither a fixed 3,000-mile interval nor a longer interval simply because synthetic oil is available is appropriate for every vehicle. Oil appearance alone is not a reliable way to replace the factory schedule.

What to check between scheduled services

  • Monthly and before long trips: Check tire pressure, as NHTSA recommends. Use the pressure specified for your vehicle, not a generic assumed value.
  • When changing oil: Check fluid levels. NHTSA also recommends routinely checking headlights, brake and parking lights, reverse lights, and turn signals.
  • At least once a year: NHTSA advises having the vehicle put on a service lift to check for road-hazard damage. This is general guidance, not a replacement for the car’s maintenance schedule.
  • Whenever a symptom appears: Arrange an assessment for a warning light, unusual noise, or leak rather than waiting for the next mileage or time interval. AAA’s maintenance checklist distinguishes this kind of symptom-led attention from routine preventive service.

Keep maintenance records

Record service dates, mileage, and the work completed, and keep receipts when available. AAA notes that a documented maintenance history can help build a used-car buyer’s trust. Records also make it easier to see what has already been done when planning the next service.
