There is no universal mileage interval for changing differential oil. Follow the maintenance schedule for your vehicle’s exact model year, drivetrain and differential: it may call for routine inspection, replacement at a specified interval under certain conditions, or both. Towing and other severe use can change the schedule.
Find the interval for your specific vehicle
Check the owner’s manual and maintenance guide for the exact year, make, model and drivetrain. Look for the differential or axle-fluid entry, and check whether it applies to the front differential, rear differential or transfer case. Do not assume that an interval listed for one model—or for one axle—applies to another.
Pay close attention to the service verb. “Inspect” means the schedule calls for checking the component or fluid; it does not, by itself, specify that the oil must be replaced. “Replace” is a separate service instruction. Why severe use can change the schedule
Some manufacturers add services for vehicles primarily driven under listed severe conditions. Examples in Toyota schedules include towing, using a car-top carrier and carrying a heavy vehicle load. Check the exact schedule: the qualifying conditions, affected components and replacement interval vary by vehicle.

Toyota’s 2025 Crown maintenance guide lists rear differential oil replacement at 60,000 miles when driving while towing, using a car-top carrier or carrying a heavy vehicle load. Toyota says those special-condition services apply only when the vehicle is primarily operated under the indicated conditions. The 2024 Toyota GR Corolla maintenance log also distinguishes routine inspection from replacement: it lists rear differential and transfer-case oil replacement for towing, car-top-carrier use or heavy vehicle loading. Its schedule is specific to that vehicle. 2024 Toyota GR Corolla Maintenance Log

What if you do not tow?
Not towing does not establish a replacement interval on its own. Use the normal-use schedule for your vehicle, while checking whether you regularly meet any other severe-use conditions the manufacturer lists. Do not apply a severe-use interval just because another vehicle’s manual specifies one, and do not skip a scheduled inspection because you do not tow.
Use the specified differential oil
Match the lubricant to the vehicle’s exact configuration. Viscosity and performance requirements can differ even within the same model. For one rear-differential configuration, the 2024 Toyota RAV4 Owner’s Manual specifies Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent; it names a different oil for another configuration. When to arrange an inspection sooner
Do not rely on a generic mileage rule or try to diagnose differential oil from its color or a sound alone. If you notice a leak, hear a new noise, or suspect contamination, check the vehicle-specific manual and arrange an inspection with a qualified shop.
Water or debris exposure deserves particular attention. Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma Owner’s Manual recommends having a dealer check the quantity and quality of differential and other oils and fluids after driving on a flooded road, or if the vehicle becomes flooded or stuck in mud or sand.
