Short answer: A Tesla Model 3 or Model Y can supply power in two fundamentally different ways. Its low-voltage accessory socket is rated for up to 12 amps continuously and 16 amps peak. That is a current limit, not one universal wattage figure, because the actual voltage must be known. A supported vehicle using Tesla’s charge-port Outlet Adapter can provide up to 2,400 watts at 120 volts (20 amps through the 5-20 outlet). The charge-port feature is configuration- and market-dependent, so check the vehicle before buying equipment.
The two power outputs are not interchangeable
Owners commonly group every outlet under “Tesla power,” but the Model 3 and Model Y have separate systems with different limits, controls and eligibility rules.

The charge-port adapter is therefore the higher-power option, but it is not a universal feature on every Model 3 or Model Y and it is not a replacement for a household electrical-panel connection.
What the 12-volt-style accessory outlet can deliver
Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y manuals state that the low-voltage power outlet is suitable for accessories requiring up to 12 A continuously, with a 16 A peak. Tesla gives a current rating rather than a single wattage rating. Electrical power is calculated as voltage multiplied by current, so the result changes as the outlet voltage changes.

For illustration only, 12 A at 12 V would be 144 W, while 12 A at 16 V would be 192 W. Those calculations are not a Tesla-published universal wattage specification; the vehicle’s operating voltage, accessory wiring and protection determine the usable result. Treat 12 A as the continuous ceiling unless the exact vehicle documentation says otherwise, and do not plan a sustained load around the 16 A peak figure.
Outlet location also varies. Depending on model year, equipment and manual edition, a Model 3 or Model Y may have a center-console socket, and some Model Y manuals describe an additional trunk outlet. Inspect the actual car and follow its regional owner’s manual rather than assuming every vehicle has the same number or location of sockets.
USB ports have no stated combined limit in Tesla’s manuals
The manuals describe USB ports as charging points for USB devices, but they do not publish a total USB output ceiling. They are appropriate for personal electronics, not a basis for estimating the car’s total external-power capability. If a device needs a high-power AC supply, use a documented AC output path instead of combining USB ports and guessing at a total.

How the charge-port Outlet Adapter works
Tesla describes its Outlet Adapter as an AC external power supply that uses the vehicle’s charge port. For the 5-20 outlet, Tesla documents a maximum of 20 A and 2.4 kW at 120 V. The Model 3 manual gives the equivalent headline figure of up to 2,400 W at 120 V.
That output comes from the traction battery, not the small low-voltage battery. The vehicle converts the high-voltage battery’s energy into AC for the connected equipment. As a result, using a heater, tool or other substantial load reduces the car’s available driving energy, and the car can stop supplying power when the configured discharge limit is reached.
Check Powershare support before purchasing anything
On a Model 3, Tesla says to open Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information. A vehicle that supports the charge-port feature shows “Powershare support” as enabled. Software, trim, model year and market all matter.

Model Y documentation is not identical across editions. Some versions describe the Tesla Outlet Adapter as limited to Model Y Performance and require the Gen 3 Mobile Connector, while another current Model Y manual describes the adapter as available when the vehicle is equipped for it. Tesla also limits availability in some regions. The software screen and the manual for your exact vehicle are controlling; a general statement that every Model 3 or Model Y can provide 2.4 kW would be incorrect.
The adapter is not a home backup connection
Tesla’s documentation frames the adapter for small-to-medium appliances or tools and specifically excludes devices with high-wattage heating elements and large, heavy-duty motors. It cannot power a home’s electrical panel and is not a bidirectional inverter. Connecting it to a panel without equipment designed and approved for that purpose can create dangerous backfeed and is outside the documented use.
What can you realistically run?
The label on the appliance matters more than its physical size. Read the input watts or amps, account for startup surge from motors, and keep the load within the output path’s rating.

A 120 V load rated at 1,200 W draws about 10 A, while a 2,400 W load draws 20 A before accounting for startup behavior or conversion losses. Those arithmetic examples explain the adapter’s rating; they do not raise the limit of a particular vehicle or authorize a device Tesla excludes.
How to use the charge-port output
- Verify eligibility: In the car, open Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information and confirm that Powershare support is enabled. Check the regional owner’s manual for trim, connector and market restrictions.
- Use the documented equipment: Obtain the Tesla Outlet Adapter specified for the vehicle. Where the manual requires it, use the Gen 3 Mobile Connector as well. Do not substitute a generic adapter and assume the car will provide the same protection or control.
- Check the load label: Add the connected devices’ running watts, and allow extra margin for motors and compressors that draw a surge when starting. Reject high-wattage heating elements and large heavy-duty motors.
- Connect with the vehicle and equipment in the state required by the manual: Keep the connector dry, inspect it for damage and ensure the plug is fully seated. Follow the on-screen prompts if the vehicle displays an external-power control.
- Set and watch the discharge limit: The traction battery can stop output at the configured limit. Monitor the car’s status and stop the load if battery energy, temperature or connector warnings require it.
- Disconnect safely: Turn off or unplug the appliance before removing the adapter, then close and secure the charge port as directed by Tesla.
Availability of individual controls and prompts can change with software and market. If the vehicle does not show Powershare support, do not force the feature through an accessory.

Charge-port output consumes energy from the high-voltage traction battery. The amount depends on the connected load and conversion efficiency, so a long-running appliance can materially reduce driving range. Tesla states that the car may stop external power when the battery reaches the set discharge limit.

The low-voltage socket behaves differently. Tesla says it can provide power while the vehicle is in use or detects a user, including when Camp Mode is active. A Keep Accessory Power On setting can maintain operation when no user is present. Enabling that setting increases vehicle power use. Tesla also says an accessory left plugged into the socket does not by itself deplete the low-voltage battery, although enabling keep-on operation changes the vehicle’s consumption.
Some charge-port manuals note that leaving the outlet adapter enabled can draw a small amount even when no device is connected. Disable the output when finished, particularly if the car will sit for an extended period.
Why a generic inverter is not the same as Powershare
An inverter connected to the low-voltage socket does not turn a non-Powershare car into a 2.4 kW AC source. It remains constrained by the socket’s 12 A continuous and 16 A peak rating, plus the inverter’s own efficiency, thermal and surge limits.

If an owner nevertheless evaluates an inverter, the exact vehicle manual and the inverter’s input-voltage specification must be checked first. The 2020–2024 Model Y manual says vehicles built after approximately November 2021 require an inverter that accepts 16 V DC input. That requirement is specific to the affected vehicles and should not be generalized to every Model 3 or Model Y.
The warning also covers heat: Tesla says the socket and accessory connector can become hot. Stop using the outlet if the plug, cable or surrounding trim becomes excessively warm, and never defeat a fuse or protection device to keep a load running.
Model-year, trim and regional differences
- Model 3: Use the Additional Vehicle Information screen to verify Powershare support. The current manual’s charge-port section lists the 2,400 W at 120 V adapter capability for supported configurations.
- Model Y: Outlet locations and charge-port eligibility vary by manual edition. Some documentation identifies Model Y Performance and a Gen 3 Mobile Connector as requirements; another current edition describes availability when equipped.
- Build date: The 2020–2024 Model Y manual includes a post-November-2021 build-date distinction for inverter input voltage.
- Region: Tesla limits accessory availability and feature support by market. A vehicle imported from another region may not have the same hardware, software or approved adapter.
- Software: Feature names and controls can change. The vehicle’s current software display and exact regional manual take precedence over a generic online claim.
A practical decision rule
For USB electronics, use the USB ports and avoid inventing a combined wattage that Tesla does not publish. For a modest accessory whose current stays below 12 A continuously, the low-voltage socket may be suitable, subject to Tesla’s warning about third-party devices and heat. For documented AC output up to 2,400 W at 120 V, first confirm Powershare support and all equipment requirements; then exclude heating elements, large motors and panel connections. If the car fails the software eligibility check, treat the charge-port output as unavailable rather than trying to recreate it with an inverter.
