Expect a wide range rather than a standard amount. Official specifications and manufacturer material for named vehicles list luggage space with all seven seats occupied from 40 litres to 332 litres. That can mean a very shallow area for soft bags in one vehicle, or room for several cabin-size bags in another. The exact model, year, market, powertrain and measurement method matter more than the “7-seater” label.
What “all seats in use” means
For a useful comparison, “all seats in use” means the driver and passengers can occupy every designated seat, including the third row, while luggage remains in the cargo area behind that row. It does not mean the third row is folded, removed or pushed forward beyond its normal passenger position. A specification that says “maximum luggage volume” or shows the third row folded answers a different question.

Even within one model, a sliding second row, a spare-wheel well, a hybrid battery and a parcel shelf can change the usable shape. A litre figure is a volume measurement, not a guarantee that a particular suitcase will pass through the tailgate or lie flat on the floor.

The following figures come from manufacturer pages, brochures or manuals. They span different markets, model generations and powertrains, so they illustrate the range rather than form an independent, like-for-like ranking.

The table demonstrates why a claim such as “a seven-seater holds three suitcases” is not a dependable market rule. The published examples use different bodies, seat mechanisms, battery layouts and test conventions. They are manufacturer specifications, not an independent test performed under one common standard.
Why the third-row boot can be so small
Body length and third-row design
A short SUV may devote most of its wheelbase to the first two rows, leaving only a shallow vertical pocket behind the third row. A longer vehicle can provide more floor length, but that does not guarantee a tall or wide opening. Fixed third-row seatbacks, recline hardware and a high load floor also consume space.
Sliding second-row seats
Some vehicles let you trade rear-passenger legroom for luggage length. Moving the second row forward can make a long bag fit, but it changes the seating position and may not be acceptable for adults or child-seat installation. Record the second-row position when you measure; otherwise your result will not be repeatable.

Hybrid and plug-in-hybrid packaging
A traction battery, charging hardware or altered exhaust routing can raise the floor or reduce the under-floor compartment. Compare the exact powertrain, not just the model name. A petrol, hybrid and plug-in-hybrid version can have different cargo shapes even when the seat count is identical.
Measurement conventions
Manufacturers may measure to a parcel cover, to the roof, or by filling a standardized test volume. The Kia manual cited above labels its luggage table as SAE and distinguishes minimum space behind the third row from maximum space behind the front seats to the roof. Those numbers answer different loading conditions. If a brochure does not state the boundary or standard, treat the litre figure as a guide rather than a promise about usable floor area.
What you can realistically pack behind the third row
The shape of your bags matters as much as their combined volume. A tall, rigid suitcase can fail to fit through a low opening even when its mathematical volume is smaller than the quoted boot capacity. Soft-sided cabin luggage and compact weekend bags are easier to compress into an irregular space, provided their outside dimensions fit.

- Cabin-size bags: These are the type referenced by the Discovery example, but the quoted bag count applies only to that vehicle generation and its stated arrangement.
- Soft weekend bags: The Sorento PHEV description specifically uses “a couple of weekend bags” as an example. Do not turn that wording into a universal count for other seven-seaters.
- Small cases and backpacks: They can use the gaps around wheel arches more efficiently than broad hard cases.
- Strollers, coolers and sports equipment: Measure them as solid rectangular envelopes, including wheels, handles and hinges. Their awkward shapes often determine whether the tailgate can close.
Keep heavy items low, prevent them from sliding toward occupants and stay below the parcel shelf or cargo cover if that cover is required for visibility or restraint. A boot organizer separates small items but does not increase the vehicle’s capacity.

How to check a particular seven-seater before travelling
- Identify the exact vehicle. Write down model year, country, engine or electrified powertrain, trim and whether it has a full-size spare wheel. Use the local manufacturer manual or specification page for that combination.
- Confirm the seat condition. Look for wording such as “all seven seats in place,” “behind the third row” or “third-row seats in use.” Exclude figures labelled five-seat, third row folded, maximum or seats removed.
- Capture the measurement basis. Note whether the volume is measured to the parcel shelf, to the roof, behind a particular row, and under which standard. Record cubic feet and litres separately if both appear.
- Measure the luggage. Measure length, width and height at the widest points, including handles, wheels and protective covers. For soft bags, measure the packed—not empty—dimensions.
- Measure the opening and floor. Check tailgate height, narrow points, wheel-arch width, floor length to the third-row seatback and height beneath the cargo cover. A tape measure or a cardboard template is more useful than litres alone.
- Recreate passenger positions. Set the driver’s seat for the tallest expected driver, place child seats if required, and set the second row where passengers will actually sit. Then verify that the third row remains safe and comfortable.
- Load a trial layout. Put the largest item in first, close the tailgate and check that latches, visibility and seat-belt access remain unobstructed. Try the layout with the parcel cover fitted if you intend to use it.
If you cannot inspect the vehicle in person, ask the dealer or owner for the exact floor, opening and seatback dimensions. A manufacturer’s bag-count example is useful evidence, but it is still vehicle-specific.
How to compare seven-seaters fairly
Use one consistent checklist when shopping:
- Same seating state: all seats upright and available to passengers.
- Same model context: model year, market, trim and powertrain recorded.
- Same boundary: behind the third row to the parcel cover, or another clearly stated limit.
- Physical dimensions: floor length, narrowest width, opening width and usable height.
- Adjustment range: whether the second row slides and how much passenger space is sacrificed.
- Access and restraint: tailgate aperture, tie-down points, cargo net compatibility and the ability to close the cover.
Do not rank cars solely by litres when the figures come from different standards. A smaller quoted volume with a wide, square opening may carry your cases more effectively than a larger figure measured into narrow or tall cavities.

Planning for common trips
Seven people on a day trip
Use compact personal bags, soft coolers and collapsible equipment. Assign each passenger a bag size before loading, and keep loose objects secured. The third-row area is often best treated as a shallow shared locker rather than a conventional suitcase bay.
Seven people for a weekend
Choose bags whose dimensions are confirmed against the vehicle opening. Pack clothing in soft-sided cases, reserve the deepest part of the floor for the largest bag, and avoid assuming that one large family case will fit where several small bags would.

Measure the equipment first. If it requires folding or removing a seat, the vehicle no longer meets the “all seats in use” condition. Consider a roof carrier only within the vehicle maker’s roof-load limits, and account for added height, wind noise and loading safety.

Important model-year and market cautions
Specifications can change at a facelift, on a new platform or between regional versions. The older Discovery brochure is not evidence for a current Discovery. Likewise, the Kia manual’s SAE figure is a separate market and documentation context from the European Sorento PHEV launch material. The Outlander span signals that configuration matters, so verify the exact trim instead of quoting one end of the range as universal.
Before buying or setting out, download the current local manual, check the luggage-volume table and ask the seller to confirm the seven-seat configuration. If the manual and brochure disagree, ask which document applies to the model’s build year and powertrain.
Bottom line for choosing luggage
There is no standard “seven-seater luggage allowance.” The official examples range from a 40-litre third-row area to 332 litres, with several vehicles between those extremes. Treat the published number as a starting point, then match the actual dimensions of your bags to the floor, opening and seat positions. For a shallow or irregular boot, compact soft-sided cabin luggage is the safest general approach—but only after you verify that it fits your particular vehicle with the tailgate closed and every seat still available.
