There is no reliable, universal amount of gold in a car. Gold is present in some embedded electronics, but the amount depends on the vehicle’s components and configuration. Available studies estimate material content across vehicle categories; they do not establish one gold-per-car figure that applies to all cars.
Why there is no single gold-per-car number
Vehicle composition varies with factors such as vehicle type, fuel type, engine size, mass class, and the electronics fitted. The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2021 report, Material composition trends in vehicles, estimates component and material amounts across those categories and quantifies fractions of 16 elements, including gold. That approach reflects the differences between vehicles; it does not yield one simple figure for every car.
The report’s time series is extended through 2023 by extrapolation, so those later values are estimates rather than direct measurements of every vehicle made in those years.
Where gold has been measured in vehicles
Gold is tracked among the metals in embedded vehicle electronics. A 2017 peer-reviewed material-flow analysis of Swiss passenger vehicles estimated 5+3−2 tonnes of precious metals in controllers across vehicles in use in Switzerland. That is a fleet-scale estimate covering precious metals as a group—not the amount of gold in one car. The study does not support dividing that total into a universal per-vehicle gold quantity. The European Commission report covers a broader set of vehicle systems, including electrical and electronic equipment, power electronics, battery-management systems, electric-drive components, and catalytic converters. Its estimates are categorized by vehicle characteristics rather than presented as one fixed gold content for all cars.
Gold in electronics is not gold in the catalytic converter
Do not treat a catalytic converter as an established source of a car’s gold. The converter evidence in the cited vehicle-composition work concerns platinum-group metals; it does not establish the converter as a gold source. Gold-related estimates in this context concern embedded electronics and other components, not a generic quantity of gold inside every converter.

Can gold be recovered from a car?
Industrial dismantling and separation
Germany’s ORKAM project tested the separation of about 30 electronics components from 11 newer-model end-of-life vehicles. The project reported that recovery from some control units, electric motors, and oxygen sensors could be economically feasible at the prices current during the project in 2017. The small project sample and dated prices do not establish that every car contains recoverable gold at a profitable level, or that those economics still apply. The Umweltbundesamt report describes component separation and recovery, not a consumer profit estimate.
Why home extraction is a different proposition
Recovering material from electronics requires identifying, dismantling, and separating components; the value of recovered material must justify that work and processing. The U.S. Government Accountability Office discusses complexity and profitability challenges in consumer-electronics recycling, which is useful general context but is not a vehicle-specific recovery study. It does not provide a per-car gold amount or a home-extraction calculation. See the GAO overview of consumer-electronics recycling.
