How to Perform Underchassis Preventive Maintenance

A practical guide to underchassis preventive maintenance, including drivetrain, suspension, fastener, and lubricant checks—always governed by your exact vehicle’s service manual.

Perform underchassis preventive maintenance using the service information for your exact vehicle—not a generic fluid recommendation, interval, torque value, or lifting point. Identify the make, model, year, and configuration, then follow its instructions for safe support, inspections, lubricant specifications, service intervals, and fastener tightening.

What to check before you begin

Get the owner’s or service manual for the vehicle and read its support and safety instructions before working underneath it. Dexter Axle likewise directs owners to consult the vehicle manufacturer’s manual for additional procedures, techniques, and warnings. Its guidance applies to the running gear covered by that manual, not automatically to passenger cars.

Work only with the vehicle supported as specified by its manufacturer. Do not rely on a jack alone or assume that a generic lift point is safe. If you cannot confirm the correct support method, or lack the equipment or experience to use it, have a qualified technician perform the inspection.

Inspect the underbody systematically

With the vehicle safely supported, inspect the areas identified in its maintenance procedure. A broad underbody check can include drivetrain, suspension, frame, steering, brakes, wheels, and lubrication points; the exact components and inspection criteria depend on the vehicle.

  • Transmission or transaxle: Look for leaks around gaskets and seals, case seepage, visible damage, and loose or missing mounting hardware.
  • Drivetrain connections: Check transmission mounts, clutch and shift linkages, axle boots, and CV joints for damage or abnormal condition.
  • Differential and related components: Inspect for leakage, damage, or loose hardware as directed by the vehicle’s procedure.
  • Chassis and running gear: Check the frame, suspension, steering, brakes, wheels, and specified lubrication points using the manufacturer’s inspection method.
  • Fasteners and attachments: Where the procedure calls for it, verify that hardware is present and in good condition. Do not tighten bolts by feel or apply a generic torque value.

A government-hosted maintenance manual excerpt includes checks of transmission mounting, seals, power take-off and linkage, frame, steering, brakes, wheel nuts, and lubrication. Those items illustrate a systematic inspection; the excerpt’s applicability to any particular vehicle is not established, so use your own vehicle’s service information.

Check or change transmission and differential lubricant

Confirm the correct method and specification

Use the vehicle’s service manual to determine the lubricant grade and viscosity, the level-check method, the service interval, and the tightening torque for any drain or fill plug you remove. Do not assume all transmissions or differentials use the same lubricant or have the same service requirements.

The level-check procedure varies. One generic training procedure describes checking on level ground with the engine off, while some units call for checking at a fill port with the vehicle raised. Neither description should override the instructions for your vehicle.

Follow the vehicle’s service procedure

  1. Position and support the vehicle exactly as instructed in its manual. Observe any specified temperature, engine, gear-selection, or waiting conditions for the level check.
  2. Locate the specified check, fill, and drain points. Confirm the required lubricant and whether the procedure calls for a particular tool.
  3. If changing fluid, collect it in a clean pan and inspect it as the fluid drains. Reinstall plugs and other parts using the specified procedure and torque.
  4. Refill using the specified method, then verify the level and check for leaks as instructed. A fluid transfer pump is appropriate only when the procedure requires filling through a port that calls for one; verify pump and fluid compatibility.

Inspect drained fluid for metal particles. The training material notes that large quantities may indicate serious wear involving bearings, synchronizers, gears, or the housing. If you find substantial metal debris, stop treating the job as routine maintenance and arrange a diagnosis before returning the vehicle to service.

Inspect fasteners without guessing at torque

Check fasteners only as directed by the manufacturer. A government-hosted manual excerpt, for example, calls for verifying that certain transmission and drivetrain bolts, cap screws, and nuts are present, in good condition, and secure. That is an example from a specific manual, not a universal instruction to retighten every underbody fastener.

Incorrect tightening or visibly worn running-gear parts can lead to malfunction and loss of vehicle control, Dexter Axle warns in its 2018 Operation Maintenance Service Manual hosted by NHTSA. If a fastener is loose, damaged, missing, or corroded, follow the vehicle-specific repair procedure rather than improvising a torque value or substituting hardware.

When Dexter’s break-in guidance applies

For the running gear covered by its manual, Dexter calls for an initial maintenance check after a 1,000-mile break-in, including visual inspection of suspension components and attachment welds. Dexter also reports that “as much as 25% of the original clamp load on the bolted joints can be lost” during that initial 1,000-mile seating period. This is specific to the equipment and break-in context covered by Dexter’s guidance; it is not a general statistic or schedule for all cars.

When to stop and get qualified help

  • You cannot verify the vehicle’s safe lifting and support points.
  • You find substantial metal particles in drained lubricant, a significant leak, damaged components, or loose or missing safety-critical hardware.
  • You cannot identify the correct lubricant, level-check method, torque, or repair procedure for the vehicle.
  • You lack the tools or experience needed to support the vehicle or perform the repair safely.

Underchassis preventive maintenance is not one universal checklist with universal specifications. The reliable procedure is to inspect the relevant components methodically and let the exact vehicle and its manufacturer’s service instructions determine what to check, service, and tighten.
