In the U.S., RepairPal estimates a transmission-fluid change at $294–$356, based on an estimate updated September 3, 2026. That figure is a planning benchmark—not a guaranteed local quote—and excludes taxes, fees, and location-specific differences. The final price depends heavily on your vehicle and whether the shop is doing a drain-and-refill, filter service, or flush.
What does a transmission-fluid change cost?
RepairPal’s U.S. estimate is $294–$356, with estimated labor of $131–$192 and parts of about $163. The estimate was updated September 3, 2026; taxes, fees, and your location are excluded. Use it to set expectations, then get a written quote for your vehicle and area. See RepairPal’s transmission-fluid change estimate.
MotorLogic gives a broader $120–$450 range for transmission-fluid service in a guide updated June 21, 2026. It attributes variation to the vehicle, location, labor rate, and parts. This is an editorial estimate, not a primary market price survey, and it covers a differently scoped estimate than RepairPal’s. The two figures should not be averaged or treated as directly equivalent. Read MotorLogic’s transmission-fluid service guide.
Why can the price vary so much?
Your vehicle
RepairPal’s September 3, 2026 estimates illustrate how much vehicle-specific costs can differ:
#1 Best Overall
- For use in 95% of vehicles including most CVTs in operation with US registered light duty applications
- High performance conditioning agents prolong seal elasticity to prevent leaks
- Improved durability & transmission life with anti-wear technology to avoid costly repairs
- Enhanced high & low temp performance supports transmission fluid in all weather situations
- Full synthetic formula with advanced additives protects against transmission breakdown better than conventional fluids
| Vehicle | RepairPal estimate |
|---|---|
| Honda Civic | $187–$215 |
| Ford F-150 | $548–$640 |
| Subaru Impreza | $425–$454 |
These are estimates for the named models, not universal prices for every model year, trim, or location. Ask for a quote based on your vehicle’s exact details. RepairPal’s estimate page provides the vehicle-specific context.
The procedure and included parts
“Transmission-fluid change” can describe different work. A drain-and-refill replaces the fluid that can be drained from the transmission; a service may also include a filter. A flush is a different procedure and can require up to 16 quarts, according to RepairPal, which can increase parts and labor costs. Ask the shop to name the procedure and list the parts instead of comparing quotes by the service label alone. RepairPal advises following the procedure in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. RepairPal’s service description explains the estimate’s scope.

Fluid specification, labor, and location
Transmission fluid is not generally interchangeable across vehicles. The correct product must meet the specification for your particular transmission; check the owner’s manual and have the shop identify the fluid it will use. Labor rates and location also affect the quote, while RepairPal’s displayed national estimate leaves out taxes and fees.

- Request an itemized written estimate. Ask the shop to identify whether the work is a drain-and-refill, filter service, or flush.
- Confirm the fluid and parts. The quote should state the fluid specification and list included parts, including whether a filter is being replaced.
- Separate labor from added charges. Check the labor amount and ask whether taxes, shop fees, or other charges are included.
- Compare like with like. A quote for a flush is not directly comparable to one for a drain-and-refill, and different parts or fluid specifications can change the total.
Use the national estimate as a starting point, not as the amount a shop must charge. The most useful comparison is between written estimates for the same vehicle and the same specified work.
