Cars.com’s comparison put the Volkswagen Tiguan first among eight tested entries, while Edmunds favored the Toyota RAV4 in a separate matchup with the Honda CR-V. The best choice depends on the exact trim and whether you prioritize value, hybrid efficiency, comfort, space, standard all-wheel drive or safety credentials.
How the 2026 compact SUV rankings compare
Cars.com’s 2026 Compact SUV Challenge tested a selected group of vehicles and trims—not every small SUV for sale. Its scoring gave extra weight to cargo volume, real-world fuel economy and value, with value weighted most; reviewer-driven scores were doubled. The results are useful as one comparison, not a universal ranking.
| Cars.com place | Vehicle tested |
|---|---|
| 1 | Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo |
| 2 | Honda CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid |
| 3 | Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited |
| 4 | Kia Sportage Hybrid SX Prestige |
| 5 | Toyota RAV4 LE |
| 6 | Jeep Cherokee Limited |
| 7 | 2026.5 Nissan Rogue Rock Creek |
| 8 | 2025 Ford Bronco Sport Big Bend |
Cars.com’s challenge results and methodology explain why vehicles with different trims—and even different model years—appear together. In a separate comparison, Edmunds, in an article distributed by AP News, preferred the RAV4 to the CR-V. The different outcomes reflect different matchups and priorities, not a settled segment-wide verdict.
Which small SUV best fits your priorities?
For a polished, well-equipped drive: Volkswagen Tiguan
The Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo was Cars.com’s top finisher. The publication praised its upscale quality, amenities, passenger space and driving performance. That makes it a strong candidate if those qualities matter most to you; the result applies to the tested trim and Cars.com’s scoring, not every Tiguan configuration or competing test.

For a balanced hybrid: Honda CR-V
Cars.com described the CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid as especially well-rounded, citing comfort, ride quality and efficiency. Edmunds’ comparison noted that the CR-V starts below the RAV4 in the cited pricing but that hybrid power is available only in higher, more expensive trims. Compare the powertrain and equipment on the actual trims you can buy, rather than assuming the least expensive CR-V is a hybrid.
For a hybrid throughout the RAV4 range: Toyota RAV4
In the reviewed 2026 comparison, every RAV4 was described as hybrid-powered, with a plug-in hybrid option also available. Edmunds reported a Toyota-estimated maximum of up to 44 mpg combined; the figure depends on trim, so check the EPA label for the vehicle you are considering. Cars.com ranked the RAV4 LE fifth in its challenge, praising its fuel economy while finding its interior less polished than some rivals. Toyota’s 2026 specifications page covers US vehicles and cautions that equipment and dealer availability can vary by region.

Hyundai states that the 2026 Tucson earned a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a 2026 NHTSA five-star overall rating; check the agencies’ underlying results for the specific vehicle and rating details. See Hyundai’s Tucson page for its manufacturer information.
For a hybrid alternative with a safety-award qualification: Kia Sportage
The Sportage Hybrid SX Prestige finished fourth in Cars.com’s challenge. IIHS lists the 2026 Sportage as a Top Safety Pick+ only for vehicles built after May 2025. Check the build date and exact model year before treating the award as applicable to a particular vehicle.

RAV4 or CR-V: check the exact price and powertrain
Edmunds’ comparison, distributed by AP News, reported starting prices including destination of $32,370 for the CR-V and $33,350 for the RAV4, and cited $37,080 for the least expensive CR-V hybrid. Those are figures from that article, not current local quotes or transaction prices. The same comparison reported up to 40 mpg combined for the 2026 CR-V hybrid and up to 44 mpg combined for the RAV4; the former was identified as an EPA estimate and the latter as Toyota-estimated. Both figures are trim-dependent estimates, not a promise of real-world mileage. Verify current pricing and the exact vehicle’s EPA label. See the Edmunds comparison distributed by AP.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make a fair shortlist
- Choose your priorities first. Decide how much you value purchase price, fuel use, passenger room, cargo capacity, ride comfort, driving response and all-wheel drive. A ranking built around value or fuel economy may not match your own needs.
- Compare equivalent trims. Write down the powertrain, included equipment and destination charge for each candidate. Distinguish standard features from options, and compare hybrid with hybrid when that is the feature you want.
- Check comparable measurements. Use consistent sources and methods for cargo and passenger space, and compare official fuel-economy estimates for the exact powertrain. The reviewed sources do not establish a complete, independently verified numeric dataset across the whole segment.
- Verify safety for the vehicle in front of you. Check the model year, test results and any build-date conditions attached to an award rather than relying on a badge in isolation.
- Get a local out-the-door quote. Regional equipment, inventory, dealer charges and incentives change; confirm the actual vehicle and final price with local sellers.
What a small-SUV safety award does—and does not—tell you
IIHS lists the 2026 Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Forester among small SUVs earning Top Safety Pick+. The 2026 Kia Sportage is listed with the build-date restriction noted above. IIHS says its awards identify the best vehicle choices for safety within size categories during a given year. Its criteria include good ratings in small-overlap front, moderate-overlap front and side tests, plus acceptable or good headlights and specified front crash-prevention performance. IIHS also cautions that larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more protection, so a small award-winning vehicle might not protect occupants as well as a larger vehicle without an award. Consult the IIHS 2026 small-SUV awards and criteria for the details.
